Written by the company

Portland Leather Goods was founded in 2015 when Curtis Matsko began crafting leather goods in his Portland garage with a simple goal: create beautifully simple, high-quality leather bags at a price people could actually afford. What started as a one-man project has grown into a global community of leather lovers, artisans, and repeat customers who believe great design should be accessible. We specialize in simply designed leather bags and accessories, including crossbody bags, tote bags, backpacks, wallets, journals, and everyday carry essentials. Our focus is on clean lines, functional design, and real leather that looks, feels, and smells like leather should. We source our hides from the beef industry, giving materials that would otherwise go to waste a second life. Our leather is tanned in award-winning facilities that prioritize environmentally responsible practices. Because our bags are made from real leather that is not synthetically coated or painted over, natural markings such as spots, grain variation, and occasional scars are part of what makes each piece unique. We own and operate our artisan workshop, The Studio, in León, Mexico, located near two of the most respected tanneries in North America. This close partnership allows us to maintain high standards, reduce environmental impact, and build long-term relationships with the people who make our products. Today, Portland Leather Goods continues to grow through word of mouth and a loyal customer base who appreciate simple design, durable materials, and accessible pricing. Our business is built around people, from our artisans to our customer support team to the community that proudly shares their bags every day.

Lovely products

Lovely products! I wish I knew where the leather is coming from. I’d prefer vegan, but I’d buy from these guys again. Also very friendly :)

I bought a bag from them years ago…

I bought a bag from them years ago which has held up beautifully and the leather is superior; however recently I put an item in my cart and left it there for some time thinking about purchasing it. The texts regarding the purchase was relentless; talk about a hard sell!!!. That was what made me take it out of my cart and stop any future communications from them.

Poor customer service on returns

Portland leather sold us a defective purse. I know these things happen so my daughter requested the ability to return it. They said they would return it but they would charge her $15 for the shipping. I think this is unacceptable to produce a defective product and require the customer to pay to ship it back. When I was purchasing the product and asking them questions about it they were very helpful and responsive. We are receiving unacceptable customer service trying to return this defective product.

Updated after Portland Leathers response: there was no defect in the leather variation. The leather was visibly beautiful. I sent a picture of the purse to show the customer service representative that it did not hold its shape when she put her items in it. I would think that that is considered a true defect. The style was the Lucy purse, which is a structured purse and it drooped significantly. Yet they still wanted to charge her return shipping.
She found a Portland leather store near her so she was able to take it back there and exchange it for a new one, same style. The new purse she now has is good.

Hi there,

We’re sorry to hear your daughter is feeling frustrated. If a bag arrives with a defect, that’s never the experience we want.

Because our bags are made from real leather, natural variations can occur, but true defects are handled differently than standard returns. If there’s any question about how this was categorized, we absolutely want to review it again.

Return shipping costs for non-defective items are outlined in our policy at checkout, but we never want someone to feel they’re being charged for something that was genuinely defective.

Please have your daughter email us at support@portlandleathergoods.com
with the order number and photos so we can take another look and make sure it was handled appropriately.

I contiplated for over a month on…

I contiplated for over a month on buying the small pebble camera crossbody bag. I finally bought it and I can’t express how disappointed I am with it. The after it was delivered I contacted customer service only to find out that they don’t give you a full refund, they also charge you to ship the product back. If this was a situation where I simply just changed my mind, I might understand. However, the purse is defective which is not under my control but I would think they would take full responsibility and refund the full amount and pay the return shipping. Disappointed and will never recommend or purchase anything again.

Worst customer service anywhere

Worst customer service anywhere. Can't cancel online orders. When returning items ($80) purse they refunded $33.00. When ordering they give a delivery date, then it comes 3 days late. Contacting customer service is a joke. They eventually stop replying.

Social media admin are SO creepy!!!

The quality is super degraded and the social media team are creepy shills.

PLG does a very specific form of marketing it’s called fomo. Fear of missing out. They portray shortages and limited releases to get mostly boomers to clamor to buy.

They recently had a “retail only” release on “hair on hide” bags. This was retail only to throw local resellers a bone. They can run to a store and resell online for a premium.

Someone on their insiders page asked about this and I told them the truth. Then, suki winky, their creepy social media manager that speaks as their dog in third person baby talk (SO CREEPY!) deleted my comment citing “unkind language” (it was just the truth) and deleted it.

Shame on PLG for obfuscating this practice which has been a literal staple of business FOR YEARS. And shame on creepy third person baby talk suki winky for ostracizing the very buyers plg actually exists for.

I’ll be glad to be removed from plg financial reports this year, personally, lord knows, I spent way too much there in 2025. Now, my mission will be to convince others to spend anywhere else.

All because creepy, third person baby talking Suki winky couldn’t handle a wittle bitty baby truth. C’est la vie.

Placed an order for a crossbody strap…

Placed an order for a crossbody strap for a new handbag, not theirs. Within a half hour, I realized my new bag had an extendable handle to convert to cross body. Immediately tried to cancel order on their site. There was no way to accomplish this. There is no email contact or phone number. I had to wait the receive the item and now I need to go through the exercise of returning it. It would have been much simpler to cancel the order. Saving us both time and money. I will now unsubscribe from their emails. No long wish to do business with a company that is not customer friendly and easy to communicate with.

I have bought a August Tote in Coldbrew as my first purchase. It is so beautiful! I love the smell and the feel of the leather. I was so pleased that I bought 3 of the Blooming wristlets for gifts! They are just adorable and of course they loved them! I have about 8 items i. My favorites right now! Having a hard time choosing! May have to get them all!

Don't Buy

Absolute crap. You buy the extra "easy return" insurance then have to pay for shipping to return!? This company is a scam. Also the bags were super stiff and ugly. Imagine killing a cow, cutting off the skin with unsharp scissors then stitching pieces together to make a bag. That's just about what they did. Gross.

BUYERS BEWARE!

BUYERS BEWARE!! SCAM OF A COMPANY!! The worst customer service I’ve ever experienced. Took over a week to get a response back about a defective item. I was told a wavy zipper, one handle taller than the other and a bag that sits sideways on a supposed top graded bag is in line with their standards. Makes sense I guess since their company seems to have no standards. I was told I should have purchased insurance - since I received a bag that was graded incorrectly I would have been able to return for free. Excuse me? I should have paid for insurance when I bought it. That way if I receive a bag that they incorrectly graded, I can return the defective item “for free”. But since I didn’t pay the extra fee when I purchased I need to pay $15 to return a $60 item. This is fraudulent business practices. Your company makes a mistake and you make the buyer pay to return your garbage merchandise? I will make sure I tell everyone how you run your company and treat your customers.

We’re really sorry to hear you’re disappointed — that’s never the experience we want anyone to have with our bags.

Because our pieces are made from real leather, natural variations can occur, but your bag should still feel like something you love carrying. If it didn’t meet that expectation, we’d truly like the chance to look into it.

Our return options, including shipping protection, are shared at checkout so customers can choose what works best for them. That said, we never want anyone to feel unheard.

Don’t order online!

I ordered a purse and wallet for my wife for Christmas. The color was darker than it appeared online. The quality wasn’t great and zipper was hard to open and close. It should have been an easy return, but their process is difficult and expensive. They also did not return my state tax money they collected. Now I’m wondering if they got the refund from my state and kept it. They do not respond to basic emails and there is no phone number listed. Do yourself a favor and find a better leather retailer. Come to find out their products are made in Mexico. Stick with a well established leather retailer who care about customer service, it’s not hard!

Slow Shipping even slower replies

Slow Shipping even slower replies
I've bought from them before and had a bit of understandable quality issues for a "less that perfect" bag, so I accept it and overall was happy. I came back to use my rewards and I paid almost $40 for shipping almost two weeks ago. I paid for the fastest shipping. If they couldn't get the bags out by the holidays they should have posted on the banner of their site instead of promoting "holiday" sales. I just got notified that they items are "shipping" but its just a printed label. Now I won't get the items until the new year and get to pay even more for return shipping. Reached out to support to get a refund on shipping or cancel my order before it shipped, nothing still. I have tried to open a return to send this stuff back as soon as I get it and it won't let me proceed unless I contact support AGAIN. Leaves a bad taste in my mouth, I dont even want the items anymore. I went to coach instead.

Worst merchandise and customer service

I purchased the Naomi shoulder bag. When I received it it had a large scratch on the side which was very visible the covered it with a lighter dye which was very noticeable. I paid 86.00 for the purse. I was told the only way for a refund was to pay to return it and the cost was 15.00. I was told I didn’t purchase a return fee. This is ridiculous to receive a brand new iteam that is defected and expected to pay shipping to return the iteam or even exchange the iteam. Never again will I purchase from this company. Please consider that iteams maybe defected and you pay to return for their defected stock.

Never order from this company again

Never order from this company again! Their products are okay, but overall service sucks. I placed a Christmas order on December 1st, which never arrived on time. Their response was that shipping time might be extended to Hawaii. This is utter bs cause I received multiple packages from many other companies, even from the UK, that arrived on time. This is poor customer service and management by the company.

This is such a disappointment. My family and I like to support small business which is great for market competition. This company lost my support for sure…any suggestions on another company to utilize for the future?
