I can't thank Petplan enough

I can't thank Petplan enough . My 5 year old cat was diagnosed with cancer and without Petplan I don't know what we would have done. They paid for investigations and chemo and made a direct payment to the various vets involved. They kept me informed, answered my questions and were sympathetic when my beautiful cat sadly had to be put to sleep. Petplan is peace of mind and provide an amazing service.,

Lack of empathy

Customer service & sensitivity leaves a lot to be desired!!! Our dog had severe stomach problems & needed an operation to try to get her better. However petplan would not cover the cost as she had had a previous stomach issue in 2021!!! As the cost for the treatment would have been at least £2.5k we could not afford this & had to make a decision to have her put to sleep - which again petplan would not cover!! When I rang to cancel the policy they were not interested did not send a confirmation but locked me out of the system immediately- so much for the bereavement counselling they say they offer- would not recommend them.

Insuring an older rescue pet

Be careful when insuring an older rescue pet and then trying to make a claim. Despite the fact the rescue charity had provided 4 weeks free insurance through Petplan and we then continued with this insurance they have stated that the yeast problem with the ear a year later, is historical and should have been declared therefore they will not be paying the claim and will be changing the policy.

Far too expensive

13 years with pet plan accepting yearly premium increases without questioning however £78 per month for a cat with no previous claims is ridiculous especially given I would also have an excess and have to pay 20% of the claims too. There is reward for loyal customers and even customer service don't try to keep you.

It's a shame pet plan that you dont look after loyal customers

My Ragdoll Chance

My Ragdoll cat was diagnosed with Urinary Tract disease when he was rushed into emergency this was for the third time he had to be hospitalised and was in there for almost a week Petplan where amazing sending us a lovely email saying they where sorry to hear Chance was so poorly. The claim for his treatment was expensive but within days petplan settled the bill. This certainly took stress out of the situation and we can't thank them enough you are amazing. I'm pleased to say Chance is doing well and hopefully carries on recovering

Awful payment processes and poor excuses.

Where to start? It’s impossible to get anyone on the phone, I’ve tried calling the person dealing with my pets case repeatedly and am always fobbed off with “they’ll call you back”. The email exchanges take days to be replied to and the payment for my pets treatment (which was an emergency) has been reduced for the fact it was an emergency and has STILL not been paid well over a month after supplying all the relevant paperwork because apparently the payment details are all sent out of the country. I have cancelled the insurance payments and found a much cheaper supplier with a much higher level of coverage and no ridiculous deductions for emergency care. I will also be changing vets as a result of this so please vets take notice of what insurance you are pushing because you will lose long standing customers as a result (with the same vet for different animals for almost 20 years).

Happy to allow sick dogs to suffer

I am extremely disappointed with Petplan. After taking out a policy for my dog, I discovered they had applied an enormous list of exclusions covering almost every major body system, including the heart, liver, ears, urinary system, digestive system, endocrine system, legs, hips, shoulders, spine, respiratory system, skin and even tumours and cysts.

The most frustrating part is that several of these exclusions relate to conditions my dog has never had. It feels unreasonable to exclude entire body systems without clear justification, leaving me questioning what the policy actually covers.

As a pet owner, you pay insurance for peace of mind, not to find out that the majority of potential claims have already been ruled out. I expected a fair assessment based on my dog’s actual medical history, not blanket exclusions that significantly reduce the value of the policy.

I have contacted Petplan requesting a full explanation and a review of these exclusions. Until then, I would urge anyone considering this insurer to carefully read every exclusion before assuming they have comprehensive cover.

Stay away to avoid Heartbreak in time of need!

We have been with Petplan for over 7 years. We took out a lifetime policy, and by this year the annual premium was £4,000, with payments of around £180 a month for our 11-year-old mixed-breed dog.

We had never made a single claim until recently, when my girl needed emergency surgery. The surgery took place weeks ago, and to this day, they still haven't made a decision or reimbursed the vet clinic.

Furthermore, our second claim for a holiday cancellation, which we had to cancel after receiving the devastating diagnosis that our girl only had a month to live, was completely rejected. This was despite providing all the necessary documentation for a claim of just £266.

To make matters worse, my sweet girl has since passed away, and of course, they provide absolutely no help with cremation or euthanasia costs.

A company that ignores you and makes your life harder during a time of grief definitely doesn't deserve anyone’s money. You are much better off putting that money into a savings account over the years than relying on their services.

Please avoid them at all costs!!!

If I could give zero i would

If I could give zero i would. My cat had been left suffering due to a loop hole that typical insurance companies find not to pay. Im now having to consider putting him to sleep as I can't afford the cost. Im heartbroken and disgusted. My advice is to look for a better company. They charge a fortune for nothing 😒!!! Never have we felt so let down. My advice is to go somewhere else.

It’s just getting too expensive!

Very disappointed in the current financial environment to receive my renewal notice only to find the monthly premium has gone up by 20% for my six year old cockapoo who has no health issues and no claims! It’s now £52.73 a month from £42.94 a month.

As pensioners we can’t afford this and I personally think it’s emotional blackmail!

I am now being asked to pay as much as I’d pay for health insurance for myself if I could afford it!

My husband rang earlier this morning and got nowhere with the advisor who said she couldn’t do anything about the price.

We are now going to have to cancel and look elsewhere for cover.

Hi JD,

Thank you for your feedback and for being a valued Petplan customer. We're sorry to hear about your disappointment with your renewal. We understand how frustrating a price increase feels when you haven't claimed. At Petplan, we never charge more for claiming, which means premiums are based on risk factors rather than individual claims history. Currently, vet treatment costs are higher than ever due to advances in diagnostics and specialist care, which is driving premium increases across the board.

If you do consider switching, please check whether another insurer would increase your premium after a claim, and whether they cover things like dental illness or specialist diagnostics. Not all policies are the same.

I have been with Petplan for over 16…

I have been with Petplan for over 16 years, but they have for the past 3 years increased their prices by 20% every year. It is important to note that whilst they have a rather nonsense video explaining the increase it also very clearly demonstrates the policies are effectively worth less. If treatment prices have increased so much as to double premiums why have your policy limits remained the same, for 16 years. Effectively the treatment cost isn’t relevant you are insuring a static policy limit. £1500 per annum to insure £7000 in treatment with an additional excess increase is ludicrously excessive. Profiteering as it’s very worst, I would prefer you didn’t respond with a “we’ll log your concern” you are effectively making pet insurance a pointless exercise.

Hi Caroline,

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback and for being a loyal Petplan customer for over 16 years. We understand your frustration with the premium increases you've experienced, and we appreciate you raising the point about policy limits. Your premium has increased because the cost of treating pets has risen significantly in recent years. Vets can now do more for pets than ever before. Regarding policy limits, we aren't currently seeing more customers reaching their maximum level of cover, but we are seeing the cost of claims within these limits getting higher. If we increased the cover limits, we would need to increase premiums further still. Your policy provides £7,000 for vet bills every year, so over the 16 years you've been with us, that represents up to £112,000 of potential cover for your pet's treatment. We also want to reassure you that with our Claims Pricing Guarantee, we never charge you more for claiming, which is very different to most other pet insurers, where premiums can increase significantly after a claim. If you'd like to discuss your options or explore whether a different plan might better suit your needs, please don't hesitate to email social@petplan.co.uk with your policy number.

Unfair premiums

Took a policy out for our Romanian rescue dog.

There was no option for a mixed breed which has no defined 2nd breed and they wanted to put my premium up to £370 for 'unknown overseas dog'. Then they told me I had to say what she most looked like and that I would have to pay £75 per month for german shepherd cross - even though she's not a german shepherd. Explaining this to the customer service person and their supervisor they basically said machine says no. Really disappointed.

Hi Katie,

Thank you for your review. We're sorry to hear of your experience when taking out a policy for your rescue. When getting a quote, we need a dominant breed to be advised if you are unsure a vet can advise of this as well. We appreciate you bringing this to our attention as feedback for improving our breed classification and pricing structure.

Absolute 10/10 pet insurance company

Absolute 10/10 pet insurance company. I have had nothing but good experiences with them… from my cat needing smaller vet visits to recently, more larger procedures.. every single thing has been covered. Minimal contact needed with them once the claim is submitted and quick decisions on resolving claims, it’s always been within a week. I understand the premiums may be slightly higher than other companies but there is a reason for this, and it is absolutely worth the peace of mind. I will never go elsewhere. Thank you so much pet plan… you are what insurance companies should be!

Exploitative company, I would not reinsure my pets through this company, they raise the prices too high when your pet gets old. Just put the money in a savings account instead.

A follow on a review I did on Pet plan…

A follow on a review I did on Pet plan in May about my Cat who had a ulcer on her left eye in March 2025 which was cleared up and Pet plan not only excluded Ulcers on my renewal but decided to exclude everything to do with both eyes which I didn't find out until after renewing my policy because I never read the policy and only looked at the price
Not only did Pet plan exclude anything to do with Eyes but also increased my payment for the new renewal policy
Apparently less cover bigger price
Seems to me Pet Plan have it both ways
Anyway as expected my complaint to thee company took about 6 weeks too say that there is nothing I can do about it and if I got
Letter from the vet I used that cleared up the ulcer to say that the Ulcer had nothing to do with what the Cat has now which is Glaucoma then they would think about it
First of all to get a report from the Vet would mean them doing tests plus them writing a report would cost a lot of money just to get a answer I know that will be the same as they gave me on my complaint
First of all I think it should be up to the insurance company to pay for a test and report if they are excluding something if there isn't a 100% certainy that a Ulcer has caused the glaucoma to my Cat
Many Cats get Glaucoma without having a Ulcer on their eye
Then there is the question why are they excluding everything to do with both eyes when there are a lot more conditions that my Cat can get not anything to do with ulcers or be in a accident and damage her eyes
I don't think a lot of customers realise that there are other parts of a Pets body that Pet Plan Exclude everything when they have a problem with that body part
Instead of writing some body parts can be completely excluded
Perhaps they would let people know what parts of the body they are talking about
I have asked for this information and have yet to get a answer on here or when speaking with them
I would ask this question before taking out a policy and not be shocked like I was. Plus if you are renewing a policy
You might still go ahead but unlike me you will know
Also I was told that if I had taken out a Life plan instead of the only one I could take out because of my cats age I wouldn't have this trouble
I then asked do you mean that the exclusion wouldnt have been put on the policy
So I said do you mean everything to do with Eyes wouldn't have been put on my policy if I had a Live plan
He said I never said that which made me think perhaps the Ulcer on the eye would have been covered but nothing that may cause
Perhaps someone can write me a reply giving me the answer on my queries and not keep saying Sorry get in touch with social@petplan
Anyway there is nothing I can do regarding my issue
But please be careful when taking out a policy with this company and check you are completely getting and ask them which parts of the body do they exclude everything on when there is a condition on it
Reply to Pet plan reply
You say premiums go up because Vet bills have increased
Again your answer dosn't make sense as although you say that's why you increase premiums if that's the case why didn't my Limit of the amount I can claim per policy which was £3000 last year and yet you increased my premium and yet the Limit still stayed at £3000 plus as you excluded anything to do with Eyes that again Limited what I could claim for
So I really can't see how you can give that's a reason to increase the premium cost
Also you say a ulcer can lead to a lot of other problems to the eye
Yes there are problems but usually there are signs within a year
There are also a lot more conditions a Cat get get in their eyes even that they have never had a Ulcer on their eye
They can also get Glaucoma without having ever had a ulcer on a eye
It seems that any condition a pet can get on a part of their body which could lead to 3 or 4 other conditions but not 20 other condition that they may get you can just exclude every condition they may get on that part of the body
May I also remind you that you excluded both eyes
Plus you excluding both eyes means that anyother pet insurance company will do the same
As I said my two policies for my cats have been cancelled with you
I just think you are not clear enough on your policies on what body parts are you likely to exclude every other conditions because of a condition they get
To me a Cat getting Glaucoma because of having a Ulcer on a eye a year earlier is not a 100% Certain when many Cats get Glaucoma without ever having a Ulcer
So if you would like to show me something different on what I'm saying about Cats can't get Glaucoma unless they have had a Ulcer or they can't get more conditions not having a Ulcer then having had one I would be interested

Again I will Mention that a Cat c

Hi Victor,

We appreciate you sharing your detailed feedback regarding your recent experience. A broad exclusion is placed on the eye as an ulcer can lead to many causes for the premiums your premiums will increase each year based on vet bill inflation and your pets age also impacts that. I understand you have raised a complaint that has been closed already. If you could please send us an email to social@petplan.co.uk with policy number.
