If you want a headache then start with Payless
I always rent with Fox rent a car and they were booked so I went with Payless. Let me tell you that was a bad idea. This company first didnt give me paperwork and said they would email it, none which was done. Also I brought the car back early and also was refused paperwork. So I waited 10 days for a refund on my card for the deposit and bringing it back early and guess what nothing. Budget, Payless and Avis group should not rent cars at all. They should sell headaches for a living then sell you the asprin with a non refundable deposit.
Payless expect Wayless
Sorry I rented from these people trouble from the beginning was told of extra 250.00 charge because I was leaving San Diego county then the vehicle was well used dents all the way around the carpet under the driver had a hole worn in it milage was nearly 60 thousand, found empty alcohol container under drivers seat besides other trash found that after family trip to Yosemite. During initial drive north found nail in front tire and engine temp keep going above normal so overall giant piece of Crap. Their motto should be Payless expect Wayless
Buyer Beware
We were running late and it took some time to find the Payless office at SeaTac. (The signs are practically nonexistent.) My husband distinctly said no to the insurance, distinctly!, but - we did not read the contract carefully because
1. This is never an issue with other car rental agencies and
2. We were very late.
When we returned the car, we were charged $100 for CDW. Of course, the office was not opened yet, and we had a plane to catch. Customer service, when you can actually contact them, said too bad.
This exact same thing happened to me 12 years ago. I swore I would not use them again, but after 12 years I had forgotten.
I do not generally leave bad reviews, or give much weight to reviews that complain about money disputes. I realize this is ultimately my fault, but Payless is now 2 for 2. I have never had this problem with anyone else.
Horrible customer service
I rented a Chevy Suburban from the counter in Denver through Priceline. I noticed about an hour after I got to my daughters that there was a dent and scrape on back drivers door. Additionally the drivers side was very dirty. I doubt the vehicle was cleaned. I tried to call customer service twice. No one available at counter. Then I called again this morning to the number listed but got customer service again. The man’s name is Henry. He’s very rude and hung up. No help at all. I would give a zero if I could.
Terrible experience with Payless
This is the most terrible experience I have had all through 30 years of travelling and renting cars:
1- No Payless counter in terminal, and Payless is serviced by far away from the exit hall Budget counter where is a small A4 paper invisible there to tell you they deal with Payless.
2- Very very very rude Filipina lady sitting there that telling you all the time, and in response to any quistion, she is not working with Payless and just Budget is a third party agent, she refused at the start to call Payless to clear issues and refused to provide their phone number, she was soooooo rude in talking and acting.
3- I had the confirmation of my booking with a total price of 63.3 $ (around 240 AED) and with limitted to 100 km/ day milage option but she calculated total of 550 AED saying that there are hidden charges that Expedia do not mention (I took a better car from Hertz of the next counter and for just 211 AED with a free milage and without any drop off to other location or any other charges like the one she wanted me to pay .
4- Deposit: She asked for 4500 AED and Hertz deposit was only 1500 AED.
There are no words to describe that lady there, thanks God I have manged to control my nerves.

Customer service beyond horrible.
Customer service is between horrible and nonexistent. If you have a problem (eg charged twice for the same rental), you will have a very hard time getting it resolved. Super-long hold times for "customer service" and then they don't help. Online customer service takes days and they don't help. I strongly recommend you avoid this company altogether. Better to pay a little more and save yourself a lot of aggravation.
Payless Bucharest!
Payless Bucharest!! Be careful with this rogue rental company. Once you have booked online and you arrive on site, you still have to pay hundreds of euros in so-called taxes. You have no choice but to pay or you can walk back to the airport. Rental office is a few Km from the airport itself. When returning the car they try to get some money out of the pockets, and if that doesn't work they try to debit 6880LEI from your account without notifying you. Luckily I had my Visa card blocked as I had a very bad feeling about this company after picking up the vehicle. Unfortunately I didn't read all these negative reviews until after I got home. Is the first time in more than 40 years that I have come across such a rogue car rental company!!!!. If you have booked there, strong one!, make sure to take enough photos of the vehicle and inform your bank that this company is not allowed to credit anything from your account. It is best to purchase a new Visa card.
My car is in the shop for a week
My car is in the shop for a week, so I searched online and found a quote on Expedia for 626.00 for a rental car in San Diego.
BUT, by the time I was done, it cost me $1352.00, and I am driving a very basic car, a Mitsubishi. It has a steel key, so everything is manual. It handles terribly.
Never use Payless Car Rental!! EVER!!
I had a terrible experience with…
I had a terrible experience with Payless car rent ( Dublin Ireland ) and i am still waiting for my refund in regards the petrol, We did agree to pay the deposit regarding the petrol ( full tank when drop off the car obviously ) and then Payless would reverse the charge - I have no clue whats is going on but i did not receive the refund so far - i did the car`s drop off last Saturday and so far i dont see my money back. Payless`s CUSTOMER SERVICE ( on the desk ) was terrible as well - very bad trust me - I booked 15 days before a toytota corolla or similar and on the desk agent gave me the cheapest car and was insisting that it was very the same class of car - the agent was trying to argue - and fight with me . I was very tired from the trip 2 days flying and they did not make any better at all.
NO CAR DESPITE HAVING A RESERVATION.
I had a reservation. But when we arrived on the island they said they had no cars. Despite my insistence, speaking to a manager, getting angry – they could not honor the contract. We ended up paying for a $50 cab ride to the French side. I do credit Kishan, the supervisor, for picking us up the following day and bringing us back to the airport to get a car. But it cost us a full day of our 3 day trip. NOT HAPPY.
Do not rent from Payless
Do not rent from Payless. Two months after returning the vehicle we rented, we got a claim in the mail for damages we did not incur during our time driving it. When we asked Payless to email photos and documentation substantiating the claim, they assured us they would and never did. We finally were able to see the documentation months later, which showed Payless was seeking payment from us for damages incurred a WEEK AFTER we returned the vehicle. In addition to being asked to pay for damages we were not responsible for, we also had about a 30 min. wait at the airport (with an infant in tow) when we picked up the vehicle because Payless had rented the car to two different customers at the same time. From start to finish, this was a terrible experience and evidence that Payless' fleet and administrative management is incredibly poor. Do not trust this company. Rent elsewhere.
The car I rented in Dallas on 07Feb2022…
The car I rented in Dallas on 07Feb2022 had several damages, so I reported them on the way out of the parking lot by marking with X on a pick slip they provided. When I returned the car, I showed them the pink slip and they told me not to worry about it. Now I received an email saying I damaged the car and the evidence they have is the same pink slip that I got on the day I picked up the car. They don't have a new one dated when I returned the car but the same one I have when I picked up the damaged car. I also have several pictures I took as proof. I called them and after 30 minutes on hold they said there's nothing they can do, and I have to sit and wait until they call me. Reservation # 325925576 Claim # 2210136671
I'd give them 0 stars if I could
I'd give them 0 stars if I could. 1 is the minimum. We waited 45 minutes in line to find out which car was ours, then another hour waiting on the car to be delivered where we were waiting for it. It was THRASHED - inside and out. My legs were cut from the tears in the seat it was so bad, and could not be adjusted (it was broken, laying back into the back seat). Worst rental car experience we've ever had. Pay the $5 more for another company!
Worst car rental company
Worst car rental company. We had a delayed flight, landed after midnight which means they couldn't figure out where our reservation was and kept us for 45 minutes (at 230 in the morning) finally gave us a car, with a Cracked windshield!! They didn't give us the damage sheet to even note it. It was late by this time, so we called it in the next day. Someone on customer service "noted it" on our reservation, however we once we returned the car, an agent marked the car as damaged and blamed us and now I have a giant headache. Payless gave us a damaged vehicle and this has been the worst customer service experience ever. Don't ruin your trip with a headache from Payless!!
Hired a car with Paylesscar Last week…
Hired a car with Paylesscar Last week in Lanzarote, Spain . Got a Mercedes A Class , and as per their quote and as per their website there was no hidden costs and no one trying to sell extra insurance ie tyres and all that usually crap that most car hire companies try . I ordered and they delivered and for a great great price , I would highly recommend Payless , no strings at all and very helpful staff too

NEVER had a bad experience until now.
Received a quote for a rental at $357. When I arrived I got a bill for $619! According to my reservation it said total with taxes ad fees, $425, I can handle that. However when I returned the car the total was $619! Apparently they added additional fee fees that were not mentioned. NEVER had this happen to me with other companies. Stay away from this company.
Payless charged us for key damage
Payless charged us for key damage. Rented car in August, got letter stating repair damage and they charged our credit card then sent the letter. We damaged no key or car. When refuting the charge they kept giving me discounts to resolve it. After long time on phone I finally took discounts 75% to get off the phone. Disturbing
I had a "ripoff" experience at San Diego Payless Rental Counter
I had a "ripoff" experience at the Payless car rental counter at the San Diego Airpot. A guy named Omar insisted they do not accept 3rd party collision insurance. It appears that was a bald-faced lie. He upsold me an extra insurance policy they provide. There was no time to ask for a supervisor as there was a line behind me of ~30 people, and we had already waited an hour in line ourselves already.
I had reserved a Kia Soul through Expedia. They had them in the garage and I saw that myself. But Omar tells me that the car is technically an SUV that rents for a higher rate. He wanted $16 more per day to let me have a Kia Soul that I had already paid for. I declined and drove away in a Hyunda Accent
He also tried to sell me 1/2 tank of gas in advance for $35. I declined knowing I'd be ripped off at ~$10 per gallon, and that I would need way more than 1/2 tank to get to LA and back.
So I hope Omar's supervisor gets to read this review and realize what damage they are doing to the company reputation with all this dishonest and high-pressure upsell BS.
I guess Omar thought he could fleece me because I am a very senior citizen. Well, I definitely am old enough to know how to deal with crap like this.
Buyer Beware, DO NOT RENT FROM PAYLESS at SJU Airport
TL; DR: Bait and switch. Hidden fees, rude employees, high deposit subject to change based on employee mood.
If I could give Payless Car Rental at SJU Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport give zero stars, I would. The full review is a long read (too long to post here), but worth it so that you know what you’re getting into in the event you don’t heed this warning and decide to waste your money and time, anyway. For context, I rented a compact car from Payless on November 10, 2021 for a total of five days, picking up and returning at the airport on November 16, 2021. My online reservation quoted $209, but by the time I left the location 60 minutes later, my total was $289 plus a ONE THOUSAND DOLLAR DEPOSIT because as I was told by several people working there, “we get to decide how much the deposit is.” Also, I am also a former Enterprise Rent A Car branch manager, so I know a lot about this business, and Payless Car Rental in San Juan is doing some shady stuff.
Full 3 page negative review on their Facebook page.
STAY AWAY! DO NOT RENT HERE!!!
TERRIBLE! STAY AWAY!!
These people are liars, thieves and once again.. LIARS.
We had a reservation online for $60 for a few days in San Jose, Costa Rica. We get to the rental place and are told that we have to pay almost $400 more for “added charges” and “insurance fees”. How does my invoice go from $60 to $460?! I fought them for almost an hour stating that the price was ridiculous for some rinky dink rust bucket. After arguing for that time I finally got them down to $265 which was okay I guess. At that point we needed to get to my destination & was over the whole experience.
A few days later I see a charge on my account for $300 which I was told was a “holding fee” so we’ll see if I get that back. According to past reviews it’s not likely..
Once I returned the car with a FULL TANK. I repeat .. A FULL TANK. I’m told I need to go to the gas station to fill up an already full car. All because there was ONE LINE missing to indicate the full tank. I told them I don’t have time & that I would like to pay the difference in cash and get told it’s $21. I JUST filled the tank with $40 worth of gas. Are you serious? So we just left & “filled up” for in the end, the line they spoke about didn’t indicate full.
So we return back to this dump of a car rental place and demand our money back. I get told that they can’t reimburse me because the car took “some” gas. I’m sorry but last time I checked, anytime you drive a car to a destination.. it uses gas. So yes sir, the car needed to be “filled” just a little. They gave us such a hard time, told us there was nothing they could do. At that point we were so over the whole experience that we said SCREW THIS & take us to the airport.
SAVE YOURSELF THE HEADACHE, STRESS AND MONEYYYYY!!!!!!
