And the car had almost no washer fluid at the collection.
But the car was ok.
After 3 weeks I am still trying to get…
After 3 weeks I am still trying to get a 1000 euros deposit back. I have called them, I have sent them emails, and they reply by sending me back random screenshots claiming that they have issued the refund. In the screenshots I do not see my name, and the card number where they have sent the refund is not mine. I am pretty sure they try not to send my money back, so I am already in touch with a lawyer.
Fantastic price and service!

As with others they claim you damage the car and send you an invoice for the repair. I also hired and paid for an automatic but was given a manual. Do not use
Avoid MegaDrive Car Rental
Avoid MegaDrive Car Rental – Dishonest Damage Charges
I rented a VW Passat from MegaDrive in Salzburg for two weeks in July. I returned the car on time, in the same condition as when I collected it, using their official key drop procedure at the airport.
Three days later, I received an email claiming “new damage” (a scratch), with vague notes on the check-in report (“BOX NS ?”) and photos that did not even show the vehicle’s license plate or timestamps. Despite disputing the charge and pointing out the inconsistencies, they went ahead and charged my credit card nearly €900.
From my research, this is not an isolated incident — many customers have reported the exact same pattern:
Alleged “new damage” after unattended returns
Notification only days later
Standardized invoices of €700–€900 regardless of the issue
This is not how a reputable rental company should operate. I strongly advise avoiding MegaDrive at all costs.
Thankfully, I had Full Protection insurance through Auto Europe, so I will be reimbursed. But MegaDrive still profits from this practice, which feels deeply unfair and dishonest.
Do yourself a favour — book with a different rental company.
Shocking- avoid at all cost (or it will)
Shocking, avoid at all cost.
The car was old with 50000km on clock and so many dints and marks I had to video them, some were not recorded in the handover documents, so had to send of details. internal looked older than the 50000km, for instance the carpet was completely warm through.
I filled it with fuel at last services station before airport, they claim it took €5 euros of fuel and the charged add ons to €60 for refuel charges.
Don’t trust, don’t use
Fraudulent company
Megadrive Salzburg accused me of having damaged the car and kept €899 of the deposit. How convenient that the apparent damage just was the perfect amount. I know that I did not damage the car as it was basically the whole time in our private drive way. I would have taken Megadrive to court but I had no visual proof as I did not take any photographs at pick up or drop off and so they could have accused me of anything. If you do hire from this company make absolutely certain that you video the entire outside and inside of the car before and after! or else they might make up a story and keep your deposit. I never expected to be scammed like that in the heart of Europe.
Absolutely disgraceful
Absolutely disgraceful. Flight arrived at 17:45 at Salzburg and the office was closed. No car, no customer support, booked through AutoEurope and they are refusing a refund. I had to spend €250 on a taxi, so I am now €500 out of pocket. Be aware of these cowboys, do not touch them or AutoEurope.
Horrible trouble to get deposit back
We rented a car from Megadrive/Buchbinder at Salzburg Airport in august. When we arrived, we had to pay the full insurance because we didn't have a credit card, only debit. We also had to pay a deposit (240 euro) that they would hold on to until we returned the car. This was fair enough, thats our own fault for not checking beforehand that we needed a credit card. We received no damage-claims when we returned the car, and the car was nice and clean.
HOWEVER, when we returned the car, we were told that our payed deposit would be returned to us the very same day. After a week, we noticed that the deposit had still not been returned.
I then started writing emails in august. No reply. I continued writing throughout august and september. Still nothing. I escalated and wrote to every damn department of Megadrive/Buchbinder in every country, even their mechanics, and finally got a reply in october.
Here, they explained that they hadn't been able to return the deposit because we had payed it with a debit-card. They were FULLY aware of this from the beginning - we only had to pay the deposit in the first place because we had a debit-card! They asked me to fill out a form with a credit card, which I did.
A month went by, and still no deposit in early november. I lost my patience at this point and started looking into getting a lawyer, which I informed them about. And suddenly, within a few ways, my deposit was payed back.
I dont know what was going on - its tempting to think that they tried to wear me out, hoping I would forget about the deposit. I hope that is not the case. But I can think of NO explanation that justifies a company not answering emails for 2+ months, and holding onto a customers money for 4 months.
I am appalled by this way of doing business, and advice everyone to rent from the bigger, more professional companies.
4 different tyres on vehicle
I'd give the people at the location I collected a 5.
The company itself for support and reimbursement when my tyre punctured on holiday and I was left for 6 hours waiting for a fix, very poor.
The tyre burst, at the repair shop I was told Mega Drive had been advised previously to change out the tyres, as all 4 were different makes and the vehicle had problems before. 1 tyre was punctured, they replaced 2 at Mega Drives request. I was charged for everything and never reimbursed. I tried to follow up, basically impossible. Lost a day of holiday and seeing my elderly relatives I had travelled to see for Christmas who were only in town that day. Very poor experience when there was a problem. It was hard to find out who to call and get updates on the day.
The reviews worth looking at, are the ones when things go wrong with the car and how it's handled.
A shame as the team at the collection point were friendy and until that point, the car offered great too.
Great experience with Megadrive
Was very apprehensive about using Megadrive after reading the reviews but had an excellent experience at Vienna airport. Pick up was quick and easy, we were offered an upgrade to an automatic which was a really good price so we took it as we had a long drive. Car had some damage which was recorded on the pick up sheet other than that it was clean and had low mileage (we upgraded to an Audi Q3)
No issues whatsoever during the rental and drop off was equally as easy. Keys left in the vehicle, I videoed the condition before we left but we didn’t need it as pending credit card payment for the excess was removed a couple of days later. Given our experience we would definitely book with them again
Megadrive scam
Pretty much as other review have reported. We were given a VW Golf with 75000 km on the clock, so a well used car. Some damage was recorded on the paper check out documents, including to the underside of the car at the front. When we returned the car they made a great show of inspecting under the front of the car claiming new damage as there was no pre-existing damage on their (computer) system. So we showed the guy the paper check out report at which point he said all was OK. Four days later we received an email informing us of new damage to the underside of the car at the front. They deducted 846 euros for this. I know we did not cause any damage. This was an outright scam. My advice is to not use them.
Scammers that use your deposit as a revenue source
Scammers
I hired a car and a crack appeared in the windshield without having any impact (the crack comes from the border of the glass, no typical impact sign). I told it to the Company employee, he told me he knows it is a defect/maintenance issue but the company would charge me for excess anyways, because I cannot do anything about it because I am leaving the country.
Horrendous company DO NOT USE

Scammed in to paying for scratches that were already there.
No handover
No pre-delivery checks

Excellent at Salzburg Airport
Reading other reviews it's hard to believe some of the comments. I have rented with MegaDrive at Salzburg many times . Three times this year already . Friendly and efficient. Have always had an upgrade free. Never had a problem with returning the car.. I thoroughly recommend them . Maybe it's different at other locations but MegaDrive/Buchbinder Salzburg is excellent .I would say outstanding.
SCAM
This company is a complete and utter SCAM. We rented a car in Salzburg from these clowns which was booked via Auto Europe for a total of 6 days. Upon returning the car at 5pm there was no one from the company present to greet us at the rental drop off and we placed the keys into a box at the office. On arrival home this company emailed me claiming that there were "damages" to the car such as claiming damage to the tyres and the back of the car which did not exist. They sent 4 photos in total, 3 of which showed some scuff mark on a wheel trim and a random photo of the back of the car with absolutely no damage at all. They deducted €375 from the security deposit with zero information about the alleged damages even after i requested further information from them twice.
I have rented cars around Europe dozens of times and I have never had an issue until dealing with these total set of cowboys.
Legal action will be taken and contacting the credit card company to block charges for these non existent damages.
Just do yourself a favour and avoid. Normally i would be quite on top of researching companies prior to paying but in this instance I foolishly didn't.
This company is Scamming!
This is a total scam beware of this company. After we returned the car we got mail in which they blamed us for a missing Hatreck (the inner trunk cover) which have never been there from the begining. They charged us 344 Euros ant thogh we send pictures that proove everything they ignored our mails and phone calls. Next time we will pay more for a main stream company and won't fall another time in a trap like that. Chack the internet there are so many complains about them. We should have check it before. Beware!!!
We had to buy the extra insurance.
We arrived on time, everything was fine until we had to pay for the deposit. " No we don't take debit card", I have experience with other mainstream car rental, they had no issue and sometimes add more in the deposit (fair enough), I tried to tell the agent, she can max the deposit (AS ALSO STIPULATED IN THE CONTRACT FROM THE THIRD PARTY VENDOR), she said "no". I also suggested a secure link so I can use my partner's credit card (didn't have it physical), still "no". Our ONLY option ? Buy the extended insurance ! We already got the extended insurance from the third-party rental website. She said "It's different this one" , Of course. Total: 95€
So we ended up with double insurance.
Insane !
The car was ok, not washed properly from the outside though, and had a lot of kilometer for a rental (50.000).
Also, on the return point, we had to go back to the office. We couldn't hand over the keys at the return parking lot.
Honestly, we didn't pay attention to the reviews, we should have. Don't waste your money there, it's not worth it. Pay more at a mainstream rental, and be a peace.
PS: Check your contracts need to pay if you want to cross drive your car. 37,50€ + Airport fees : 26€
we rented a car with full insurance for 10 days
we rented a car with full insurance for 375.79 euro, no damage or anything else happened to the car, leaving it as we picket it up, full tank and in the designated place at the airport and returning it 2 hours earlier than agreed. when we get home, 8906 sek (750 euro) is deducted from the account by the company. we have sent several emails and asked for the reason but have not received a reply yet, it has been a week now still no response. We rent cars several times a year from different companies since we compete in different countries. this was the first time we have been involved in something similar. We will never rent from this rogue company again.
DO NOT USE THIS SUPPLIER.
It would be better if you would choose another supplier.
I used to use this supplier serveral times for 5 years and I was sure that I know every regulations and their tricks, but It was not. They said they give me another car at the same price, BUT with another extra charge, ex.) winter tire fees, airport charge and extra insurance. which is suppose to be served free of charge.
What made me even more angry was that the moment I got the key and left, they recommended that I get additional insurance. They said I need more insurance. "Are you sure? sure? sure?"
