Excellent service from start to finish

Excellent service from start to finish. The quotation was provided promptly, and the work was completed to a very high standard. The new stone windowsill and pointing blend perfectly with the existing stonework, including carefully matching the original pattern. A true craftsman — highly recommended.

Recovery of Waste Ground

In March 2025 we bought part of a 10m wide strip of waste ground at the rear of our property. Kyle and his people worked on every aspect of its rehabilitation and integration with our back garden. They helped clear the ground of vegetation, level it, re-pointed about 30m of rustic wall, built steps down from the existing garden, built a fence, and built a small pond.
This kind of work is not cheap but the quoted prices were fair.
There were delays caused by weather but no ‘work package’ had a cost increase.
Kyle and his people worked hard and efficiently - no slacking! - and their work was accurate and of good quality.
We are very pleased with the finished result (early June 2025)

Seemed good at first

Marionville Masonry (MM) were first contacted in 2016 to rebuild a stone gatepost damaged by a delivery driver and I found the work to be completely satisfactory. Noting that MM were describing themselves as lime mortar specialists, I decided to have my whinstone cottage repointed in lime mortar and also to install stone lintels/surround around a recently inserted window which had not been done well by a previous builder. The work was completed October 2016 but I had to call MM back November 2016 after as soon parts of the mortar were failing including the coping stones – MM now dispute they did the coping stones but my email exchange with them proves they did. They also came back in 2017 due to water ingress around the window and also to repair parts of the mortar again failing. They also came back again in 2020 for failing mortar which by this time water had penetrated thoroughly into the chimney cavity leading to severe water ingress internally. Again, some repairs were made. This year, I decided to get a proper survey on the house completed by the Scottish Lime Centre Trust (approved and recommended by Historic Scotland). It was less than complimentary about the pointing, highlighting many errors that were detrimental to the cottage. I asked MM to come back again and to look at what they needed to be doing to repair the work. Firstly, they dissed the Lime Centre Trust report and made lots of excuses regarding their poor standard of work and refuse to accept liability despite being back to the house on a number of occasions. They blamed the weather ie too much rain and frost, that the coping stones mortar had failed, that the house had not been inspected annually (?) and that when the work was originally completed I had not paid for “after service” which as far as I can make out is covering the new mortar with hessian for protection while it sets. When I asked what type of lime mortar he used/would use his response was “the one I always use”. MM agreed to come back in June this year (not seen any sight or sound of them) to do some more repairs but that “they would not be taking off any mortar” in the process. I have no idea what the intentions were.
The attitude of the owner of MM is rude, aggressive (he talks fast and loudly over you so he can’t hear criticism), makes up excuses for poor workmanship and refuses to take any responsibility for a very poorly done job. To rectify the problems caused by this company it is costing me tens of thousands of pounds. I have photographic evidence of the damage caused and email and audio visual recordings of my interactions with MM so can back up my claims. I have CCTV recording both sight and sound of our most recent interaction (yes, there are notices up on the drive).
In conclusion, I do not recommend this company - a thoroughly unprofessional, unpleasant company.
