Iqaluit Airport - half old; half new
Iqaluit Airport
Arrived on Air Greenland flight 771 from Nuuk which parked way out on the tarmac so we could walk down the metal steps and over to the old wooden terminal building in the rain. Picked up my wet bag off the one conveyor belt and lined up in the reception area to hand my paper customs/immigration form to one of the two Canadian Border Servicers officers at a desk. Then went out to get a taxi. There were none. An airport employee made a few calls and taxis appeared.
Departure on Canadian North flight mmm from the new section of the airport with four check-in counters and adVentures Express gift shop (pre- and post-security). Many tourist items (scarf, bag) had a tag that said “designed in Canada; made in China”).
There is a snack bar and central seating area with huge murals reproducing native artwork like Kenojuak Ashevak’s Enchanted Owl drawing. A hallway connects the old and new airport sections.
Outside boarding into our Canadian North aircraft to Ottawa but instead of climbing up slippery metal steps, there was a switchback ramp from the ground into the plane. Excellent.
