I've had a Hotbin for a few years now
I've had a Hotbin for a few years now, I bought it at the Chelsea flower show
Its been very good at composting, in fact too good, I have lots of compost and nowhere to use it
We can literaly throw anything organic in there and it will rot away
Its very simple to use and takes up very little room

We had to smile at “TOO GOOD”… that’s a very nice problem to have. If you’ve got compost coming out faster than you can use it, you'll have to start bagging it up for family members or share a few bags with neighbours/allotment friends.
Really pleased to hear how simple you have found it to use, how little space it takes up, and that it’s been happily munching through all your organic waste for the last couple of years. Happy HOTBIN composting!

Very easy to set up
Very easy to set up, got it up to temperature nice and quickly! Recommend using a remote Sonoff thermometer instead of relying on the one on the lid. You can then track the internal temp instead of opening lid!

Work well but only until trashed by squirrels…
Work well but only until the squirrels find them. I have 2 with massive holes in sides and top. Won't buy again until you do a version with a wire mesh outside.

Early days with high hopes.
I’ve not had time to get the hot bin up to temperature yet, but I like the way that it’s made, and I have high hopes that soon we’ll get some good compost from our food waste.
We live in a very windy area and we do need to strap it down, however it still seems quite robust enough to stand the winds once it has some weight in it.
I’m looking forward to seeing how it works once we can get it up and running.

On woodchip: totally hear you. If buying it’s pricey, many customers add their own cut up prunings and have luck sourcing woodchip cheaper/free from local tree surgeons, garden services, or community compost sites. Mixing in (ripped up egg boxes and toilet roll tubes) shredded cardboard/paper can help stretch what you have.
On the door fastening: the straps should pull tight if you hold the buckle and pull the strap at the same time. There are some helpful tips and work arounds on our YouTube channel.
You’re spot on about potting: HOTBIN compost is brilliant as mulch and a general purpose soil improver, but for pots/seed you can blended with other growing media rather than used on its own.

The best hotbin around
A very well made hotbin, recommended to be by a friend. I would also buy the pedestal so access to the liquid fertiliser is effortless.

The hot bin is very quick at producing good compost.

Now my third hotbin in use
Now my third hotbin in use. I'm now more picky about what goes in. We're lucky to live in the countryside and have supply of wood dust and shred our paper, to balance the 'wet' household waste. Think carefully about your commitment to producing lovely compost - it isn't magic....

You’re absolutely right: the “recipe” matters, and balancing wetter kitchen waste with dry browns (carbon) like shredded paper (and wood chips) makes all the difference to keep the bacterial happy.
