Really short on stock and choice, only selling key mainstream titles most already own. Frustrating visits every time for me personally.
Shelf space taken up by 20 copies of the same release. Good luck finding more obscure artists (which really are not 'that' obscure in collecting circles).
No price matching, not cost competitive at all, who else is left on the street to compete? Only independents who can barely afford their leases.
No vinyl imports. No real bargains on old lines (unless you're big on Susan Boyle / Chas 'N' Dave).Appreciate they have overheads but their stock costs at least £5, minimum, more than other retailers on the high-street (and online). Also noticed damaged B-stock on shop floor several times before, charged at same rate as new. Current to this review - head to the Rolling Stones section if you do not believe me. Scrappy copy of Steel Wheels been on sale for months. Asked if they had a undamaged copy in-store, checked their systems (of course they didn't).
Are they hoping customers won't notice 'the gammy resealed merch in the corner', returned twice with loads of shelf wear? What's that about? You can't sell B stock as new. This isn't eBay!
I do not have any issues with staff in this, my local branch. A part from the hippie looking manager (who you just know listens to Sinatra & Bach), they're just kids waiting for their shifts to end.
Simply think HMV policies are tight and service they provide is now outmoded for committed hard copy collectors . Amazed they still even have physical stores. I have better luck, at more competitive prices, with half the charity shops in the area over HMV in Plymouth, as I suspect I would nationally. The only other option are the excellent record fairs which frequent the area.
The only thing I buy from them regularly now are the gatefold compatible record sleeves. * Incidentally, stop wrapping rubber bands around them folks! Takes weeks to flatten all the creases out.
* Why would I need Plymouth branch to order me copies, when I can just use your website (or official band merch sites at reduced cost including PnP)? How is that remotely helpful? No middleman needed. Like I said - you are outmoded and obsolete on Highstreet. My Preferred Artists & genres on vinyl, Plymouth has zero copies of anything, alongside your national website which has sold out on copies. Which purchasing dept decides what HMV should stock and obviously what sells? Are they using predictive A.I models or something? Someone or some dept is slacking. You basically have one job HMV...
You are welcome for me typing words into an input device, I am sorry all my complaints are longer than one sentence.
One thing you never seem short on are unofficial band T-shirts with terrible designs, stitched by third world labour. Also dusty bluetooth record players with ceramic cartridges and overpriced plastic dolls which customers whack on their shelves to look at (mint in box). Great use of shop floor space there.
