Hertz has been pretty great, but the speed of getting cars is just annoyingly slow. I have rented cars twice in the last month, one at the IAD airport where it took me almost an hour to get a car. An... See more

I am extremely disappointed
I am extremely disappointed with the service provided by Hertz South Africa Cape Town International Airport, particularly regarding their handling of administrative fees and traffic infringements.
After receiving a fine handling fee months after my rental ended, I reached out to Customer Relations for clarification and proof, as two fines were generated just minutes apart for locations 90 km from each other—a physical impossibility.
Instead of reviewing my query, representative Kelsey Watt sent generic, automated copy-paste responses. Every single email was ignored in substance; she refused to provide the official infringement notice, failed to explain the timestamp discrepancies, and completely ignored my questions about how to settle payments without an active credit card.
The utter lack of effort, total dismissal of valid customer inquiries, and abysmal communication from Kelsey Watt make this one of the worst customer service experiences I have had. Hertz quickly collects administrative fees, but offers zero support or accountability when obvious administrative errors occur.
Avoid renting with Hertz South Africa if you value transparent, human, and helpful customer support.
A Hertz reservation does not mean the car is there — and customer service does not know
I am writing this primarily to warn other customers about a problem with Hertz’s reservation and inventory system that I did not know existed.
I had a confirmed reservation for a Ford Expedition or similar/full-size SUV at Hertz on N. La Cienega in Los Angeles. I specifically needed that vehicle class because I was transporting artwork with measured dimensions. I even tried calling the location three times the day before pickup to confirm, but could not reach anyone.
I arrived for my 11:00 AM reservation and, after a long wait, was told they did not have the vehicle class I had reserved. When I explained that I specifically needed the dimensions, employees laughed and told me “everyone is booking that car.” They offered a minivan that would not work, gave me the Hertz customer-service number, and did nothing else to help.
Here is the part future customers need to understand:
I called Hertz customer service, and they told me the vehicle I needed was available at another Hertz in Beverly Hills. I traveled there, waited a long time again, and they did not have it either.
Customer service then told me the vehicle was available at LAX.
At this point I repeatedly asked them to PLEASE verify that the vehicle was physically at LAX before sending me across Los Angeles again. They could not. Customer service told me they could not call the location. I tried calling LAX myself and could not get anyone on the phone.
One representative told me my reservation had been transferred to LAX and I did not need a new confirmation number. I called back only because she had not told me which LAX Hertz to go to. That was how I discovered the reservation apparently had not been transferred at all. Another representative created yet another reservation.
I finally went to LAX because I knew that if Hertz failed again, at least every other major rental company would be nearby.
At Hertz LAX there were 22 customer-service counter stations and four employees working. I waited approximately 90 minutes.
When I finally reached the counter, guess what: the vehicle Hertz customer service told me was available at LAX was not there either.
The employee who finally helped me at LAX was excellent and was the first Hertz employee that day who actually took ownership of the problem. She found me a larger vehicle that would fit what I was transporting.
She also explained the most important fact of this entire experience: centralized Hertz customer service does not actually know which vehicles are physically present at LAX.
That means I had been sent from location to location based on supposed “availability” that apparently was not verified physical inventory.
My original $452.70 reservation ultimately cost $633.88. I also spent $68.35 traveling between locations. What was supposed to be an 11:00 AM pickup approximately 15 minutes from my parents’ house turned into more than seven hours of trying to obtain a usable vehicle.
So my warning is this: if you absolutely need a particular vehicle class, do not assume that a Hertz confirmation — or even a Hertz customer-service representative telling you that the vehicle is available at another location — means that vehicle is physically there.
And if you are told to travel to another Hertz, ask the employee to verify the vehicle directly with that location before you go. In my experience, centralized customer service could not do that, the locations were effectively unreachable by phone, and I was sent to two separate Hertz locations for vehicles that were not there.
The problem was not simply that one location ran out of cars. The problem was that the system repeatedly told me where a car supposedly was without apparently knowing where the cars actually were.
Great experience
Great experience with Hertz at Cairo Airport! The rental process was quick and easy, and the customer service was excellent. The staff were friendly, professional, and helpful throughout the whole process.
Everything went smoothly from pickup to return. I would definitely recommend Hertz Cairo Airport and would rent from them again!

Please do NOT use this garbage of a rental car company. Their Nashville, Tennessee airport representative was rude and kept on talking over us when all we wanted a clear response from him why they wouldn’t rent us when we had already paid through Expedia!! Never again will I use hertz ever again!!!
They double charged me in the beginning…
They double charged me in the beginning then tried to claim there was damages done to the vehicle from what the ai drive through screens said. 2 months later they want me to pay 2,000$ for damages after I already just paid 700$. For little spots that were probably from rocks kicking up. I will never rent from them again.

I had a flat tire the 2nd day of rental. There were no spares which I have found is standard. I called Hertz and was told it would have to be towed to the service center close to the airport. We were an hour and 15 minutes away from the airport and the cost was 350.00. We purchased the Insurance supplement and was also charged a damage waiver for 299.00. The 350 is ridiculous. I got the address and information from the tech on line and told her I would use AAA. She said that's fine, a car will be waiting for you. A shuttle will be available at the service center. Service center people were great and I got a shuttle right away. But when I got to the Hertz counter they didn't know who I was, there was no report and I had to call them again to get a ticket number. I got out of line, called and got the ticket number. The girl trying to help me was new and didn't have rights so I had to wait for her to get help from one of the other two reps. And after one of their lines were empty she got help. Not next but when he finally had no customers in his line. When we finally got started I was told they had to talk to the person that rented the car. I reminded them I was an additional paid driver but they tried to insist my husband had to be there in person. He was an hour and 15 minutes away without a car. I told them they have his number and can call him. They finally relented without calling. The young girl was frustrated and did try to help but of course it took forever before it was completed and I finally got my car. It hadn't been cleaned but by that point I didn't care. I just wanted out of there. So day one of vacation was shot as in total it took 8 hours to make the call, get picked up by AAA, shuttled to the airport and dealing with all of the hassle then returning to our vacation spot.
Hertz Dublin & Booing.com
Hertz Dublin & Booing.com – unauthorised money taken - looking for advice
I paid Booking.com in full for my car hire, but I have since had several unexpected payments taken from my bank by Hertz Dublin.
I have contacted both Booking.com and Hertz several times, but I have not received an explanation or refund.
I am very worried that further money may be taken from my account, especially as no one seems to be interested in helping
Has anyone had a similar experience with Hertz who took the payment a week after they had been paid in full.
I would really appreciate any advice on what I should do next.
Thank you.

Terrible customer service do not use Hertz
I’ve rented a car at Brussels Airport and was charged €3000 for damages.
Hertz did not send me my rental agreement or any damaged documents, and I cannot make an insurance claim because of it.
I have emailed them hundreds of times and tried to call the customer service but to no avail service is terrible. I do not recommend Hertz!

We booked and paid for a rental for 6…
We booked and paid for a rental for 6 days. Our plane was 1.5 hours late and when we got to the counter (Regina airport), the person working couldn’t even put down the soup she was slurping to talk to us, and proceeded to tell us that we were past the two hour hold time, so they gave our rental to someone else. Now, I would understand if it was just reserved, but it was reserved and paid for for 6 days. This, in my opinion, is ‘double dipping’, as that vehicle could have sat there for six days, as it was already paid for but instead they took my money and someone else’s for the same vehicle. Poor business practices.
they always treat me great
Reserved a car at the Santa Rosa…
Reserved a car at the Santa Rosa Airport 2 months prior to my trip. Got to the airport and there was a long line. No clean cars, people waiting for over 2 hours to get a car. Ended up having to rent from another vendor at a cost of well over double. Desk person was overwhelmed. Why reserve cars if they are not available when you show up???
Never again!
I had a bad experience with Hertz last summer when they claimed I had damaged my rental car even though I had photo proof that the damage was pre-existing. We had a lot of back and forth and it wasn’t until I shared the photos publicly on social media that they acquiesced and refunded me my deposit.
Because they have a good reputation I put that experience down to a blip in service and rented with them again this summer. The car was returned and they confirmed everything was OK and that my deposit would be returned.
I waited 2 weeks before following it up as I know it can sometimes take up to 10 days for it to show back on my card. I emailed. No reply, emailed again. No reply, emailed again, no reply…. This went on for 2 weeks. No reply. This had quite significant consequences for me as their hold on my card meant I didn’t have sufficient funds to collect my next hire car which left me stranded at the airport with 2 young kids.
100% fail rate from Hertz. I won’t be giving them a third chance.
They charge loyal customers more than they charge general public
Beware, when booking a car from Hertz in Ireland. (This may apply to other countries as well, I haven't checked.) I have been a Hertz gold member for many years. Every time I rent a car in Ireland, the rate offered to the general public has been lower than the rate I am offered when I log in as a Hertz Gold member.
The service at the location I regularly use is excellent and the staff are wonderful. It's just really annoying to have a company deliberately overcharge loyal customers like this.
Hertz Gatwick are the worst car rental…
Hertz Gatwick are the worst car rental company as they let you purchase a vehicle online . Consumers thinks they are collecting this vehicle arrive just to be told this vehicle is unavailable but another one can be purchased at a higher price and there is no other option! This company is misleading its consumers and there is no honesty or transparency . The brand has lost its credibility . The staff are no more than used cars sales persons .
We rented a car for nearly two weeks
We rented a car for nearly two weeks. The location did not have what we requested. But the Customer Care contacts made sure we received a proper refund and they were in touch with us promptly and did not make us wait.
The car we rented was excellent
The car we rented was excellent - small model and everything worked well. It drove well and met our needs. The staff was helpful with directions, explanations but allow yourself extra time when picking up the car; there was a line when we got there. The location is right in a busy area so the driving is a little hectic at first - just getting in and out of the below ground parking lot is a challenge. All things considered, it was a good value.
