I would recommend everyone to stay away…

I would recommend everyone to stay away from Hertz South Africa!

The trouble began when picking up a car at Hertz Johannesburg, which we already reserved online. Although they had every information they needed it took 30 minutes till we had the keys to the car. The information about the damages at the car said the car was without any scratch - which was of course not correct and took another 20 minutes till we had an employer with us who noted the damages we found. After that, the car didn't start at all. We had to get another car and the same procedure began.

This car worked and when we returned it two days later, we were told everything was fine. We left South Africa for Namibia and started to see that Hertz charged over 100 Euro without a word what the money was for. After that, we received every day a charge of 53 Euro without any invoice. We wrote an email to the customer service and wanted to know what the money was for - and of course, didn't get any answer.

As our flight back home was from Cape Town we decided to visit the Hertz location there. They told us that it seems we didn't returne the car and the rental was still open. But they were quite friendly and tried to call the Johannesburg location to end the rental and settle our case.

Of course, no one picked up there, so we received two email addresses we should write to. In the invoice we received, we noticed that the rental was still for the broken car and not the one we actually drove. We wrote this information to Hertz and although we've received the money in Rand back, we still had to pay the credit card charges and the currency difference without any wrongdoing. We also never received a personal apology from Hertz at all.

So: NEVER HERTZ ZA AGAIN

Shocking experience on 3 occasions

Shocking experience on 3 occasions — long wait in line , cars not available , wrong cars offered , attempts to claim car damage which was not correct , poor accounting , attempts to double charge on several items . Also it appears Hertz SA is not part of Hertz corporation (?) Do Not Use this Company

Penalised for bringing car back early.

Penalised for bringing car back early.
We booked and paid for three days, drove from Cape Town to Johannesburg then returned the car after two days. So they changed the agreement, and charged us for two days plus kilometers which was R1500 more! Dishonest and wrong.

Worst experience ever with rental car company

Got a letter of demand from Hertz for an alleged traffic fine that was recorded on the car during my rental (1 year after the alleged event). No previous notice about this, but only threats of legal action. This notice e-mail followed 2 weeks after Hertz had apparently issued a letter to me (attached as PDF to this e-mail). I acknowledged the receipt and said am happy to engage, but asked for proof of the traffic offence, and for managerial input due to the short notice after 1 year had elapsed (with no knowledge at all that there was an outstanding traffic violation). Reply from the legal department offered no explanation, no evidence, but issued a registered letter for a 20 day extension (which I did not request) and added a further fee for the letter. Never again Hertz! Good luck keeping customers.

Avoid renting a car from this company, save yourself a head ache…

Avoid renting a car from this company in S.A. I had nothing but problems from the get go. The rental agreement document was illegible, confusion over the deposit, returned the car on time and 10 months later I start getting money removed from my bank account with no indication as to why. Eventually got the money refunded. Use Thrifty car rental, they provided an excellent service. DONT USE HERTZ.

Exceptional service delivery

Gustavv's reception and response to my booking was exceptional up to the last day when I dropped off my vehicle. I will undoubtedly like to repeat the use of service of this quality when back in South Africa in future.

Hassle free rental

I had a completely hassle free rental car from Durban airport. No issues with charging, efficient collect and return process and friendly staff.

Had 2 bookings with Hertz in Cape Town

Had 2 bookings with Hertz in Cape Town. Noticed several (unauthorized) credit card debits from them. When I returned the 1st booking I got a signed letter stating I was due a refund of ZAR 580.
Several contacts by email to the CPT airport manager Amanda Cronje but several weeks later still no response.
This is the kind of rip-off one associates with 2nd tier car-hire, not Hertz. Very disappointed and will avoid in future.

Watch out for whopping fuel charges

Very questionable practise of charging for fuel whether its used or not. I filled my tank 20k from Durban airport where I dropped off car. When I got home I found I had been charged for a full tank of 70 litres. The most I could have used was 2-3 litres. Has certainly put me off using them again. So much for relying on a big brand.

ATTN : HERTZ SOUTH AFRICA MANAGEMENT :

ATTN : HERTZ SOUTH AFRICA MANAGEMENT :

Order #ZA369066590 :

The rental was done through the broker (economybookings.com) :

1. The rental was done covering the chosen options :
C-Class, Road assistance & insurance 'full coverage' ;
2. Post rental discovery :
A 'Super Waiver' was included in the rental contract however was
never discussed by the Hertz Clerk with me :
! The only we discussed was a reimbursable sum to be blocked at my
account (to be returned back to me upon car return).

When the mistake was discovered by me, the claim was raised
immediately based on :
1. Fact that I was never asking the 'Super Waiver' (no needs) ;
2. I had 2 cards with me with a sufficient founds to cover the required
deposit : the evidences were provided Hertz.

Overall situation seems :
1/ Embarrassing :
It has been taking for me more that 3 months to clarify the situation.
2/ I have a strong feeling that I was 'cheated' due to negligence :
Upon arrival a voucher was provided by me to Hertz Clerk ;
The fact that the Hertz employee never discussed with me any
additional options : saying 'that all is ok you can sign there and there'
the option was included -> still questionable 'why'?

The result is that I paid almost +50% of the rental price of the car.

I am very disappointed with this situation & I have no moral rights to recommend HERTZ SOUTH AFRICA as a professional provider to whom it may be concerned.

Service was perfect

Service was perfect, particularly when dropping the car. Only critical point: the pick-up space was pretty far outside and not easy to find. A map would help.

Charging damage with no reason at all, despite promise not to.

We went on vacation to Namibia, and hired a vehicle (Hertz). The roof of the baggage-compartment came off in the middle of a desert. We could not help this in any way. The car was replaced by Hertz (took me the whole morning, resulting in another 500 euro costs for an extra night at a lodge). Hertz assured us that no additional charges would follow. But now they claim almost 500 Euro (creditcard). Hertz does not help in any way, they supply me with tel. nrs. that are not answered. They keep pointing at different departments, even to people that do not work there any more. I spent hours on the phone (costly!). People do not book here!!!

Never ever rent again from Hertz

On the 1st of June 2016, three Hertz global customers arrived at the Hertz copenhagen downtown office to collect the rental car, which was pre-booked online. The staff at the counter was David "McGuee ". The customers wanted to pay for the rental in cash(376 DKK) David M advised they don't give back any changes as they have no such service, hence the customers went through all of their bags to search for the exact change(you can imagine when travelling in another country, the nonsense of this), when this failed, one of the customers presented her Amex to pay for the charges. The card was swiped twice, it was declined, she then presented her MasterCard, which is from the same account, it went through successfully. So this customer made a comment "your company MAY not take Amex". Next thing this David McGuee guy was shouting "don't tell me what I can or can't do! Do you want the car or not" he was rude, aggressive and abusive. So the customer said "keep your car"! David M guy immediately cancelled the customers booking and shouted at the same time "get out!" The customer said " once we put out stuff away we will leave". Once again, the david McGuee guy shouted "get out, f$&@"! So the customer at this stage could no longer held back"f$&@ you too! You mother f$&@er!" The fuckward D M then said "get out or I will call the police". The customer said " please do. We would also like to talk to your manager". The fuckward DM then said " he is not coming till 10:00"! So the customers sat down and waited for the police to come. In the meantime, one of the three customers rang Hertz Denmark service centre to report the incident and seeking resolution. A lady by the name Angelica spoke to the customers and basically said there was nothing she could do as far as renting the car is concerned and she would cancel the booking due to the incident, however, she could start the claim process and investigate. She would get back to the customers later on the day. While the customer was on the phone, the fuckward DM was yelling in the background to interrupt the customer to report the incident to the customer service manager. Also, at approx 9:30am, the fuckward DM notified the customers that the police would not be coming (NFK) and it is ok for the customers to wait for the manager to come. At approx 10:05, the shop manager Stuart Murray, showed up and spoke to the customers. He basically repeated what Angelica told the customers and he took the customers details, he also promised the customers he would get back to then later that day. The customers went on to hire a car from Avis. In the morning of 2nd of June, not only the customers were not contacted for any resolution, instead one of the customers received statement of charges for a car that was declined by Hertz. This is unacceptable, greedy, irresponsible behavior by the Denmark Hertz company! This rude, arrogant company should be condemned and boycotted globally till they start to treat their customers properly!

Horrible!

Worst experience ever!

1. 4 hours in to our car hire they force us to switch car, from a SUV to a sedan.
2. They make us wait for 5 hours, eventhoug they said they where just 5 minutes away.
3. They threathen us to charge 1.200 dollars if we didn’t switch car, even though we had a contract for the other car, and they couldn’t give us a contract for the new car.
4. They told us the new car was fully tanked, but when we started it, it was COMPLETLY EMPTY! If we hadn’t discovered that, we would have been stuck, because there was 200km to the next gas station.
5. He then got a 20Liter gas container out of the trunk and tryed to pour it in to the gas tank, this resulted in gasoline all over, and we had to drive around with all the windows down the whole time because the car STANKED OF GASOLINE. All our gear and clothes started smelling of gasoline too.
6. When we returned it, everything was in order, and we didn’t get any remarks, but when we got home we saw that on the second day of the rental, they had taken all of the deposit!!
7. We contacted them several times, and they just ignored us. It wasn't until rentalcars.com took the case for us that something happened. If it hadn't been for them, we wouldn't have gotten a dime back.
8. After they agree with rentalcars.com to pay us back our money, they make a new charge un our card for 750dkk. Again without any explanation they charge us and this 2 months after we returned the car! Can't believe they can do this, and we have now closed our card so they don't keep charging us!!
8. NEVER RENT WITH HERTZ, THEY DON’T GIVE A S*** ABOUT CONTRACTS OR COSTUMER SERVICE.

This happened in Namibia april 2015. The manager in charge of this was called Bjørn Martins.
