First guest to stay and what an experience it was!
I recently stayed in the shepherd’s hut near Hexham, and it was an absolutely magical experience! (I shared this review on Google too)
The hut was easy to find using the directions from the Hadrian’s Wall Huts website, and the hosts provided a warm welcome on arrival. They were onsite for any assistance but completely unobtrusive—I barely noticed they were there, which made it feel like a private retreat. The nearby B&B is also tucked out of sight, so you can fully immerse yourself in the tranquillity of the hut’s setting.
The hut itself is incredibly cosy without sacrificing functionality. It’s equipped with everything you could need, including a toaster, kettle, and induction hob. I brought food to make a few simple meals and was well-fed for the whole weekend. The wood burner was a standout feature—so much more effective than I expected! Despite snowfall on my first night, I stayed toasty warm with the fire adding a beautiful ambiance. There’s also a small electric heater that’s handy for warming up the space quickly before heading out for the day.
The bed deserves a special mention—it’s unbelievably comfy! Getting up in the morning was a challenge, but the promise of spotting sheep, cows, owls, or even a deer outside the window made it worth it. I was treated to a dramatic storm one night, and while it was noisy, the hut felt secure and snug, offering the perfect vantage point to enjoy nature’s soundtrack.
The bathroom is surprisingly spacious, with a hot shower and incredible products that made me feel like I’d stepped out of a spa. While there’s no heating in the bathroom, the fire in the living space kept everything comfortable.
The location is perfect for walking, with several trails starting right from the doorstep. I had grand plans for hiking but found myself so mesmerised by the views from the hut that I only managed a quick two-mile wander! Watching the sheep on the hills and spotting deer twice was so captivating that I barely touched my book all weekend. Waking up to snow-covered hills on my first morning was nothing short of magical—like stepping into Narnia.
As a solo traveller, I felt incredibly safe throughout my stay. The hut strikes the perfect balance of seclusion and security, with privacy to relax but reassurance knowing help wasn’t far if needed.
One final highlight: the hut faces north in the Northumberland Dark Skies area, making it an ideal spot for stargazing or even spotting the northern lights! I didn’t get the clear skies I’d hoped for, but I caught a glimpse of some aurora activity, which was a lovely bonus.
I can’t recommend this shepherd’s hut enough. It’s the perfect place to unwind, soak in the beauty of nature, and recharge. I’m already looking forward to returning in the future!
