I filed both Federal and State. Price and accuracy are great. I did my taxes in parallel w/ TurboTax and got the same numbers. So why just 3 stars? Because they don't support IL-2210, whic... See more

I used FreeTaxUSA for the first time this year. When compared to its competitors, I found it very easy to navigate and very affordable. My tax return has been accepted and I hope the process remains as smooth as it has been. I definitely recommend it.

Scam and won’t refund my money.
I did my federal taxes based on zero income in 2023, the software then prompted me to pay for state taxes.
Knowing I made 0 in 2023 I don’t understand why the system would prompt me to do my state taxes which apparently aren’t necessary if you’ve made ZERO income. Then charge me doing state taxes when my federal had $0 income. At the end of the process the software tells me they can’t e-file federal or state. To top it off customer service has not issued a refund for taking my money to do NOTHING. There was NOTHING to prepare because there was ZERO income. Complete scam.
Response to FreeTax USA reply: your website does not properly distinguish that you have multiple websites. I went to the “FREE” site, there was no indication of a “commercial” site. Again you charged me for absolutely NOTHING - your site did no preparation because I had 0 income, the state taxes were supposed to be free, nor did your site e-file anything. You literally provided NO service. As I said before I did not use anything from your site because it was utterly useless. I shouldn’t be held accountable for your softwares “assumptions.”
Shady business practices and with scammy software “logic” built off of “assumptions,” deceptive UX patterns built in, and a deceptive name of “Free” Tax USA.

Longtime turbotax user here. Until yesterday. I jumped the turbotax ship at the eleventh hour (everything was input, I was all set to file despite being somewhat aghast at the steadily increasing service fee). My buddy sent me a text saying he finished filing. I asked what service he used. He said freetaxusa for 14.99. I immediately hopped on board and found it to be a friendly, seamless interface, all my numbers lined up with turbotax. Very glad I found freetaxusa. By the time I bailed on turbotax, the fee had reached nearly $180.

They still charge you to file State Tax so it’s not free. Choose a new business name.

I have no problems with FreeTaxUSA EXCEPT I can't find a way to talk to someone about a message I keep getting.
"Already Signed In
We noticed you were already logged in to this account elsewhere, so we safely signed you out.
Please sign back in to your account now."
I am not already logged in elsewhere!! Who else is logged into my account when I am logged in?
I'm really concerned about security issues and can't find a way to talk to someone unless I pay for Pro Support. HELP!

Used this preparer for the 1st time, and now I still have not received my refund and cant get answers from anyone as to what the delay is. If I had used Turbotax like I normally do then I would not be in this situation. State asked for proof of different things in which I sent, and Federal just tells me its delayed with no reasoning sent in the mail. I filed on Jan 29th and it's now the middle of April, I should have had my return awhile ago and this tax service doesnt help with it whatsoever.

Saw on the state website they were free so I went to their website. NOT FREE. You have to have come from the state website or it’s $14.99 even though it says FREE on the state website

No where was it stated that at "free" tax USA you could only file federal for free and if you need to file your state you either have to pay them or choose a different service. Now that I've already filed my federal taxes with them I have to either file my taxes AGAIN with a different company OR pay them to allow me to file my state taxes through them. Predatory business practices. Should be illegal.

WARNING!! If you want to file the FREE STATE TAX you have to start out on the State website and use their link to the FreeTaxUSA website. Otherwise you have to pay for the state return. SO stupid. Once we did that is made us go through the whole process AGAIN with the fed return and then because we had already efiled that the only way to get the free State return was submit it FOR MAIL IN!! I was so angry. My grandaughter only has a part time job - it should not be this hard to file her taxes.

If you need support, no matter how simple, you have three choices: free email which never gets answered, chat for $7.50 or Pro for $49.99 (presumably someone who can spell gouge! Once your return is filed you NO LONGER have access to the forms, only a PDF with a bold PREVIEW COPY DO NOT FILE splashed across each page. ANY correction requires their support - you're prohibited from making any changes once the return is submitted. Misspelled your middle name, typed a wrong digit, wrong PIN? Pay up! And, if you have to resubmit you have to pay for that as well.
The biggest issue I have is that once your return is filed the return is NO LONGER AVAILABLE for review, copy or print. Why? The files are NOT SAVED ON YOUR COMPUTER! In other words, you no longer have a record of your return. They have all those forms and you can't have access - no matter that they have all your personal and financial information on them. THIS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL! Presumably, all that information is on THEIR STORAGE - no matter that it's encrypted. At least I hope it is because they would be a prime target for cyber thieves.
H&R Block, TurboTax, et al save clear copies of all forms on YOUR computer and you have free access and can even make changes at will. Need to amend a return - no problem. Sure you pay for the re-filing online BUT you could also just mail the return in at NO COST except the stamps.

My tax prep went really smoothly. I see most bad reviews are when one has to pay for state taxes, which I did not. Had a simple standard deduction tax which went very smoothly. Two other so called free ones both tried to charge at the end and would not allow a printout without charging. This was by far the most user friendly site.

My account was hacked, email. Password, and phone number was changed locking me out of my own information. I sent an email to FreeTaxUSA advising them of the situation and requesting that the account be blocked, deactivated, or reverted back to my contact information, however it has been a month with no responses and the culprit still has access to my and my children’s information and Social. I want to start a class action as the lack of security, responses, and communication has put my tax information and private information at risk for a month now and even still the website and company/organization has done nothing to correct the situation. In my opinion this is a data breach and clear negligence in their security measures considering they collect, hold, and essentially are responsible for the information they require. Hopefully I will get responses before I am forced to seek legal action against them. A month and counting for situation rectification.

Completely false advertising like Turbo Tax. Nothing is free and they should be sued. I had to pay to file my state taxes. Filing a dispute with my bank.
In response to their response. I already contacted you and you didn’t provide any resolution. As stated, I am filing a dispute with my bank.

I used freetaxusa.com to electronically file my federal and state of Illinois income taxes for 2022 and 2023. It worked extremely well and both returns were filed at no cost to me. The online program allowed me to edit information I had forgotten to enter, which saved me from having to start over. This free version takes you directly to your state tax screen once your federal forms are completed. They sent me a text, within 15 minutes of filing my federal return, to let me know the IRS accepted my 1040 return. It was pretty easy since I had my 1099 forms in front of me for the federal return, and my property tax form available to provide the amount I paid and the property number for the state return. I only had to answer a few more questions to "sign" the forms. It took me about two hours to complete everything, given that I am old, cautious, and slow completing online forms. They even gave me the option of editing the forms after they had accepted them. I haven't tried any other free filing programs and I won't, since this program worked perfectly. I highly recommend using this website to file your federal tax return at no cost. Once that's filed, they will tell you whether they will also file your state form for free, as they did for me.

#1 when they said they would pull ALL my STATE info over from Federal they did NOT when it was submitted. Talked with customer service via email they were EXTREMELY rude and not helpful at all! I will NEVER USE THEM AGAIN

Reply from FreeTaxUSA
I still haven't received my refund. The company they work with for payments is just holding my refund. Do not pay out of your taxes for fees unless you want to wait.

Just used FreeTaxUSA to file my individual fed & state income tax returns for the 7th year in a row. As always, very straight forward experience with no BS. Simple, fast-loading interface with succinct explanations for terminology and boxes that I need help understanding. They are good for both W-2 wages and/or business income. The state portion costs $14.99. Totally worth it. I've never tried the add-on pro services, although I can only imagine that it's good, if you need it.

What a great online experience. Especially after leaving crappy Turbo Tax mad and frustrated. Those guys should take their cues from this company. It's simple, to the point and you can get through it quickly. Thanks again guys for making my tax filing free and easy.

I had an excellent service today for both my federal and state taxes. I am elderly and they guided me in a very easy manner. When I failed to answer a question, they reminded me quickly. The website is very well structured. There are so many large companies that have terrible sites. This small outfit puts them to shame.
