Used to be good, but getting bad past couple years. Last year I paid to file state but then it would not allow state to be filed after the fact and advised due to it being the previous 2023 year it had to be mailed in. They already knew this before charging me though! So I contested the scam charge on my credit card. Now this year, they declined my payment and stated bc of "payment issues" last year I could not file state or make payments this year?! I emailed them and they said bc I did a chargeback last year they were charged a fee for that and I'd have to reimburse them to ever make a payment with them again! They scammed me and bc they didn't get away with it they are blocking me?! Wow! Nope.... Will be filing state on the direct state .gov site for FREE from now on. IDK if I technically am doing my taxes twice - I'm never paying these scammy online companies a dime ever again!!!!

Fast, easy and free for fed and state (PA) for daughter's simple return. Easy upload of last year's H&R Block return. No upselling.

Completed entire return. Only at the very end was told e-file unavailable. Also EIN required — even though IRS transcripts mask EINs. Wasted hours. No warning.

This year 2025 Taxes on this platform was awful. I ended up just leaving a using an another tax platform. It was so confusing when I got to the end and there was all these stupid warnings. It said I did not enter my W2’s for 2024 and I know I did. I went back and checked. I just was a wreck from all the warnings. They did say just ignore but really!! Anyway I am done with them!!

I used Turbo Tax for years. Then a couple years ago I wasn't able to import an item I needed as they had a glitch. Told them I was going elsewhere and they said I could not get a refund because I ordered online - so beware. I then went to FreeTaxUSA. No, you cannot import but once you do it the first time they carry over the information except for amounts for current year. The input is simple and a couple time I needed a Pro (cost $44) and worth it. My issue and not the layout. So, no cost for the Federal and the State and Pro and audit protection was around $81. With the other agency I was paying close to $200 for all those services. No regrets about changing. Love FreeTaxUSA. In fact, my sister and niece are also using it with same input as me.

Chose April 15 for payment and after submitting return the system changed the payment to date of submission, so now I'm paying in January.

This is my 3rd year using FTU, and it keeps getting easier and easier. I used to use TurboTax, ugh. I'm so glad I don't have to anymore!

FreeTaxUSA is a breath of fresh air in the tax-filing world. Its clean, productivity-driven interface keeps you focused and moving without the usual clutter or upsell pressure. Pricing is transparent and upfront, so you always know what you’re paying before you file. Compared to TurboTax and H&R Block, it’s noticeably easier to use, with a smoother, more intuitive flow. The UI is genuinely wonderful—simple, modern, and designed to get you in and out with minimal friction.

I’ve been using this site for a few years, and it’s worked very well for me. The main reason I started using it is that it could handle all of my forms without an additional charge, unlike some other “free” sites. The interface isn’t perfect, but I’ve always been able to find what I need, and I haven’t encountered any technical issues that I can’t get around. I would definitely recommend that anyone who feels they don’t need professional preparation and who wants to save some money try out this site.

I filed my taxes on the 9th of March. I paid for the extra support. Their idea of extra support is to tell me to call the phone number that I already have. What is support to them. One of mr tax refunds that I paid them extra to double check has now been reduced by 91% by the IRS and the only thing I get from these people is the phone number that I already have. Paying for the extra support is a joke. DON’T PAY FOR ANYTHING EXTRA. It’s not worth it.

I did my 2024 tax returns through FreeTaxUSA and had an “underpayment” problem with my Oregon State return. According to the State, there were three possible reasons for the mistake, two of which were not even remotely applicable. The only explanation for the underpayment would be a “calculating error”. I contacted FreeTaxUSA, explaining the situation (in detail) and was told the only way they would look into it is if I paid the additional price for their Support Service. Wait, what? I thought they claimed “all of their calculations are guaranteed accurate”. Apparently not. Even with simple taxes, which is what I have, FreeTaxUSA isn't worth the time, expense or frustration.

So why just 3 stars?
Because they don't support IL-2210, which is a hassle to fill out manually but computationally very easy (mostly basic arithmetic -- just a tedious amount for a human). This is a very important form for people who have income unevenly distributed throughout the year. Not being able to e-file it w/ my IL taxes means I get dinged by the state until I fill it out by hand and upload it to the state's revenue website.
I raised this to their customer support in '24, and am disappointed it's still not an included form heading in to the upcoming tax season.
I'd give four or five stars aside from this big miss.

I read some of the negative reviews, and it seems either technical issues or unique situations were an issue - honestly, this is a free service (for federal taxes, $15 for state)! My taxes are not simple W-2 1099's, and after 5 years and numerous oddball situations, I have yet to run across anything the software couldn't handle. I cannot recommend highly enough!

A deceitful company that promotes itself as a platform “Free federal return for everyone,” when in fact it is not a platform for everyone. You can only file tax reports if you are US citizen and physically located in the United States, but as soon as you travel or work in another country and still want to file returns and pay taxes to the United States, this company becomes unusable. Misleading marketing!

Earlier this year, I discovered that I had some unfiled returns. TurboTax could not be used, so I searched for a solution. Having used FreeTaxUSA in 2020, I reached out to them. They still had returns active for the years I missed, so I used them to fill out my missed federal and state returns. As a result, I received around $400 in refunds. When I start my business, I may need to use a different service, but for now, FreeTaxUSA is my go-to choice for simple tax prep.

This is the first year Free tax USA has been used to file my taxes and I STILL do not have my federal. Its like no one knows nothing about where my money is and I am very frustrated as I have a son to take care of. I really need this money. I'm upset right now! Its August for goodness sake!

The first year i had no problem then the next i didn't get my tax return and discovered freetaxusa had only filed one of two states. So i mailed in the state they missed and thought i was done. Another month or two later, irs search for tax refund showed no record of the filing freetaxusa claimed to have submitted. IN JULY after filing in February i learned freetaxusa had also not filed the federal taxes. It still makes no sense & of course, i had to pay turbotax who's program is designed to require someone to run it for the taxpayer. So i will not be using freetaxusa again, because i have record of 31 emails trying to get help from them during the 3-4 months trying to figure out why my tax refund didn't come in. Even now they have not acknowledged their negligence. That business could get citizens into legal trouble!!

My return is 4 months late. Using them. I did everything I can bought al the upgrade packages. And was told just wait. I still have not got it and they want they're 47$ no matter what. I can pay it, but the principle of paying for a less than sub par performance bothers me.

I've used freetaxusa for years. Last year, there was a problem with my state tax; I filed early (Feb.) and I guess there was a state update that free taxusa hadn't updated on their end. This year, my state tax says my OH Nonrefundable tax credits are off by $200. Since I go by freetaxusa online worksheets, I can't figure out where that figure came from on my 1099-R. To get any help, I have to pay for an upgrade for advice. I'm done with freetaxusa.
