Everlast Plus, Gillingham, Kent

This gym used to be owned by Roko Health clubs until it was acquired by the Fraser Group in December 2024.

As Roko it was a club in every sense of the word - friendly, welcoming, informal, offering an opportunity for people to socialise whilst keeping fit. However, once Everlast acquired it things very rapidly went downhill. All the windows were blacked out, walls painted black and little or no maintenance to the pool. Anti-bacterial wipes to clean down the machines afterwards, gone. Loyalty card giving discount on coffee, gone. It was then closed for two months during June and July this year while it was being 'elevated'.

Despite the term, there has been little or no elevation in my view. Previously we had two studios for a variety of classes and a separate studio for Spin. One has now been converted into a high intensity workout area for Hustle and Haymaker classes and the other for Reformer Pilates. The area previously used for Spin is now used for floor Pilates and yoga but the room is very cramped. Most of the other classes have been withdrawn and the freelance PT's let go; including those who were very popular. What classes do remain, are booked out instantly because there are now too few classes for too many members! All the old cardio and resistance machines have been ripped out and new ones put in. However, these are inferior compared to the old ones which connected to the internet for viewing YouTube etc. Frankly I am not naïve enough to believe this is in order to reduce their carbon footprint by saving energy; more likely a way for Fraser Group to save money. The machines are left in a disgusting state after people have finished using them because they don't feel inclined to provide their own wipes. Everlast however refuse to supply them or even a spray and paper towel for members to use. The swimming pool appears to have had little done to it other than a few light bulbs replaced; the jacuzzi has been ripped out and the sauna is out of action for the foreseeable future!

If all this wasn't bad enough, the membership prices are way higher than Roko charged and will be imposed on existing members upon renewal. Many have chosen to leave and I imagine many more will do so at the end of their contract/notice period. On the basis Everlast did not consult or give members any notice that the facilities and classes previously enjoyed were being withdrawn, the Manager was asked if the usual three months' notice period could be waived or at least reduced to one month. This was refused and must surely constitute a frustration of the contract.

The staff are pleasant enough but they all speak the party line. Possibly in fear of their jobs; most likely because they know the Fraser Group business plan does not include members who are older, looking for social interaction and wanting more than a fast workout fix.

I would urge anyone looking to join a gym in the Medway towns area to shop around and go anywhere other than Everlast, Plus or no Plus!

Very disappointed with Everlast Gym…

Very disappointed with Everlast Gym Thurrock. This is becoming completely unacceptable. The leg extension machine has been out of order for well over two months. It was supposedly repaired at one point, but the “repair” apparently lasted only a couple of days before the machine stopped working again.Even worse, the air conditioning has also been out of order for around two months. Training in these conditions is extremely uncomfortable and, at times, simply unbearable.I contacted the manager about these issues. My first email received a response, but after I followed up with a second email, I was completely ignored. No explanation, no update, and no indication of when anything will actually be fixed.Members are paying their monthly fees in full for a service that is simply not being properly provided. Equipment being broken for months and the air conditioning being unavailable for months is not acceptable.Things break — that happens. But leaving equipment and essential facilities unusable for months while ignoring paying members is a completely different matter. At this point, training at Everlast Thurrock is becoming increasingly difficult to justify. Members deserve functioning equipment, a reasonable training environment and, most importantly, basic communication and respect.Very disappointing. Management seriously needs to address these issues.

Liverpool - Aintree

Connor and Sadie were both boss. Starting at a new gym can be a pain when you don’t know where anything is, but they made me feel really welcome. No messing around, just friendly and genuine. Some gym tours can feel disingenuous, but this was the complete opposite.

They won’t let you out of contract no matter

just now
New
Under no circumstances join this gym Cambridge branch or probably any of then of this is their customer service. I am trying at the moment to cancel my membership due to health concerns. I am not in my twenties I am in my fifties. I provided them with hospital records to show my heart condition. Not enough then they wanted a gp letter which I paid 36 pound for still not enough cause not worded right for them. They put me on medical freeze which means my contract is now 15 month. Never experienced anything like it. I never gave the go ahead for the medical freeze either. DO NOT JOIN. I work in high line and I will make sure my voice is heard

Underwhelmed by Everlast + elevation

I am a member of Gillingham which has only just re-opened as an Everlast + gym. It is so dark everywhere especially in the corridors to the changing rooms. They have removed a lot of classes during the daytime and put the pilates/yoga into what was the spin room. This is on the front of the building right next to a very busy road so traffic noise is a constant. In addition the loud music from the gym floor is also very clear. This totally destroys the calm atmosphere needed. Not impressed. This gym is clearly aimed at 18 to 35 age band. Another point is that the club was closed for 4 weeks to undertake the 'elevation' but the swimming pool area has not been touched. goodness know when or if this will ever be 'elevated'.

The Everlast gym in Chafford Hundred is…

The Everlast gym in Chafford Hundred is really bad. It's not the staff fault but the machines are constantly broken & takes around 4 weeks to be fixed if not more.
Furthermore, during the whole summer in last 6 weeks, the air con has not been working & making working out unbearable. They don't even put coolers around the place to help until it's fixed.
Paying monthly fee for uncomfortable conditions which is not acceptable under Health & safety & machines that do not work

If I could give 0 stars I would

If I could give 0 stars I would, this has to be the worst gym I’ve ever been to. I joined the gym and after my minimum term ended I called to cancel which the man on the phone said he was happy to sort and I can stop my direct debit payments. However 5 months later I get a bill for the payments I have missed with threats to increase it if I don’t pay. I spoke to the team and cried at them and they were so apathetic and rude. I emailed to cancelled and called. I even received the “sorry to see you go email” and still I’m being charged. I called again to say this doesn’t make sense and they are still rude. I don’t even live there anymore. I wish I never joined. Please please don’t join this gym.

Everlast Sunderland

My self and my husband have used the sunderland gym for a few years now, it was rather tired looking and run down so understand the need for the renovations however what I didn’t like was the underhand way we were treated during these, we were advised in march not to cancel while the gym was undergoing the renovations as we would be unable to get them at the same price, so unable to use the gym for over 2 months for then to be emailed in may to advise each membership would be increasing by £4.50 , had I have known this I would have cancelled both memberships and now no one seems to care at all as long as they get the money

I am extremely disappointed - Avoid this gym

I am extremely disappointed with how Everlast Gym in Swindon has handled my membership downgrade, and the complete lack of accountability has been incredibly frustrating.

On 22nd July at exactly 4:00 pm, I called the gym and spoke to a member of staff called Amy to request that my membership be downgraded from £65 to £40. She explained that she wasn’t sure whether the system would allow a downgrade to the £40 membership and said she would speak to the manager before calling me back.

At 4:19 pm that same day, Amy called me back. That conversation lasted around 7 minutes, during which she explained that the system would only allow my membership to be downgraded to the £45 tier. I accepted this without hesitation. She told me she would process it immediately, confirmed that it had been done, and assured me that from August onwards I would only be charged £45. She also made it clear that there was nothing further I needed to do.

Despite following the process exactly as instructed and acting well before my next payment was due, August arrived and I was still charged the full £65.

On 4th August at 8:45 am, I called the gym to ask why. I also explained that the reason I was downgrading my membership was because I am currently struggling financially. During that call, another member of staff (also called Amy) told me she could see that I had spoken to someone previously. She even commented that although she expected to see another staff member’s name, she could instead see the name Seb attached to whatever had been processed. She specifically told me that whoever had dealt with it hadn’t processed it correctly, and asked me to send an email so the issue could be investigated.

I did exactly that.

The response I received from Sebastian was astonishing. I was told there was “no record” of any downgrade request, no evidence that it had been processed, and therefore they were refusing to refund the difference.

So which version is true?

Either:

* there was never any record at all, or
* your own member of staff was correct when she said she could see that something had been processed incorrectly.

Both cannot be true.

What frustrates me most is that I did absolutely everything I was supposed to do. I called in advance, accepted the alternative membership they offered, received confirmation over the phone that everything had been processed, and was assured that my August payment would be £45. I relied on that information.

Instead, I was charged £65, and when I raised the issue, I was effectively told that because the gym failed to keep accurate records, I have to pay for their mistake.

That is unacceptable.

Mistakes happen in every business. What defines good customer service is taking responsibility when they do. Instead of acknowledging what clearly appears to have been an internal processing error, Everlast Gym has chosen to deny responsibility and leave the customer out of pocket.

I expected much better. Sadly, this experience has left me questioning how reliable the gym’s administration actually is and whether members can trust assurances given by staff.

If I could leave ZERO stars for this…

If I could leave ZERO stars for this absolute joke of an establishment, I would do. PLEASE PLEASE do not join. THIEVES. THIEVES. THIEVES. They didn't set up my direct debit properly. I ended up paying around £117 in a bulk payment as they duplicated my transaction but then refused to give me a single penny of my money back. Despite sending them 4 lots of evidence of duplicated payments. I even wrote a letter to head office, of which they have completely ignored. Getting in touch with anyone who knows what they're doing is futile. I have still not received a refund to this day. I have taken it up with my bank and fingers crossed there will be a solution. I repeat do not go here. Aside from the lack of equipment or broken equipment, not to mention broken showers and poor communication. They will take your money and not return it. Go elsewhere and protect your finances!

Leigh gym multiple faulty machines

Everlast Leigh gym has multiple faulty machines that don’t get repaired.
The staff are rude and unprofessional.
The gym is always busy due to them giving free day passes just to make it look busy.
Due to the number of faulty machines and the large number of people in the gym, it’s impossible to do a full workout.
The gym is covering dust and the air-conditioning does not work so on hot days it is a tin sweat chamber. No Open windows for ventilation.

Do not care about their members

The company could improve by actually listening to its long standing members, especially those that have been taken over from Roko. When people ask for classes to be retained it would be nice if Everlast could honour that instead of switching the gym culture entirely. If you are someone who enjoys a community style gym with classes for all sexes and ages, do not go to Everlast Gillingham. The management are unhelpful and it is unfortunate that they do not seem to care about the core values within the gym. That being decent instructors creating an enjoyable social place to train. Instead there seems to be a rather bullish approach to its members that have actually tried the alternative to the original Roko style only to be dictated to about their membership.

My Experience with Everlast Gym

My Experience with Everlast Gym – A Customer Perspective

I would have choosen 0 stars but that wasn't a option.

I created this post to share my personal experience following the change of ownership from Roko to Everlast Gillingham Kent .

I was a loyal gym member for around 14 years and valued the facilities, classes and overall experience that were available when I joined.

Following the takeover, I experienced a number of changes to the services and facilities that were important to my membership experience, including changes to the class timetable, the removal of facilities like the jacuzzi I had previously valued, and a reduction in the variety of classes available. There was never any customer consultation regardless of signed petitions etc.

When I raised my concerns with Everlast head office , I hoped for an open conversation and a review of my circumstances as a long standing member. Unfortunately, I did not feel my concerns were fully considered, and my experience of dealing with head office was disappointing. I requested that my concerns were escalated for further review this was ignored, but I did not feel I received the level of communication, transparency or customer service I would expect from a established company dealing with a loyal customer.

During my time as a member, I was also left disappointed by comments from the Gillingham management team suggesting that if customers were unhappy with changes, they should simply leave. As a long standing member, I found this attitude concerning, as it gave me the impression that customer feedback, loyalty and retention were not being valued.

This page is not intended to tell people where they should or should not exercise. It is simply a place to share my personal experience and encourage anyone joining a gym to ask questions, understand what is included in their membership, and consider how changes to services or facilities may be communicated in the future.

Customers invest their money, time and trust in businesses. Clear communication, listening to feedback and valuing loyal customers are important parts of good customer service.

I hope this helps as there are other gyms in the local community with more variety that are cheaper.

Avoid Swindon

Swindon gym is subpar, much better gyms available for half the price. Go to JD Gym instead.

I cancelled and was phoned up to ask why I was cancelling, they didn't take my feedback very well about the equipment being poor and gave me blatant sass over the phone. Why ask for feedback if you don't want it?

Just avoid it and the staff.
