for the 3rd time booked a car at Dollar. Always a pleasant and carefree experience the last time by Nordin of Dollar Boston even brought from the rental station to the gate due to disability. Nordin makes the difference compared to all other rental companies

Abuse

Rental was booked and paid on line via bsp.
But without any information when taking the car, an upgrade and a premium road service was added to the agreement and as they have the credit card number for the deposit, they charged 158 USD extra for 4 days!
When claiming, they show the agreement!
But it is a scam as in the same time, they proposed an easypass ( for toll roads) that we were able to decline.
So it is clearly done on purpose to cheat the customers !

They do not care about you

Basically bait and switch place. I paid for insurance prior to car and then they snuck in extra insurance. When I contacted them they said they couldn’t remove. Do not ever use them. They won’t help at all. I’ve had great experiences with other car rental agencies, but I will never use Dollar again.

I had an incredibly disappointing…

I had an incredibly disappointing experience with Dollar Rental at the Baltimore, MD location that significantly disrupted the start of my family vacation. I arrived on time for my reservation to find the desk staffed with three attendants and no line. I was greeted promptly, and my reservation was confirmed—everything seemed to be going smoothly.

However, during the check-in process, another Dollar employee came to the counter and began complaining—loudly and inappropriately—about returning to work after a death in her family and how Dollar didn’t even send flowers or a card. This led to a cascade of complaints from the other employees at the counter about Dollar’s poor treatment of its workers, including not even providing water for staff. All of this was happening while I, a paying customer, was left standing there listening.

In the meantime, I observed at least three other customers arrive, receive their vehicles, and leave—all while I continued to wait. More than 20 minutes passed with no communication from the attendant. When I finally asked for an update, she casually told me her system was down—despite the fact that others were being helped without issue. She then abruptly left the desk and disappeared into the garage for 12 minutes.

After requesting a manager, it took another 15 minutes for someone to show up, only for them to tell me that the car I had reserved was unavailable. I asked for a refund and was met with indifference and a complete lack of empathy. I ultimately accepted a lesser vehicle just to move forward, but even that took another 10 minutes, as the attendant had to go to the back office for a small discount approval.

The process from start to finish took nearly an hour. During that time, I saw at least eight other customers come and go while I stood there. To add insult to injury, the delays caused us to miss the first scheduled activity of our trip, which we were unable to reschedule—impacting the overall quality of our vacation.

The lack of professionalism, poor communication, and total disregard for customer experience from both the front-line employees and management was astounding. I will not be renting from Dollar again, and I strongly advise others to think twice before doing so.

Complain system is crap and zero accountability

I rented a car 2 weeks ago and upon returning by mistake I forgot some valuable item in back pocket of front seat.

Note that the company doesn't have any trackable system where a responsible person sign off the compalin..

Totally crap .. don't even think of getting in their trap. Worst service. I paid deposit of Aed 2000 along with rental of AED 900 and 100 for salik.. salik is also charged as an estimate .. no traceability!!

Wouldn’t rent me a car

I setup a car rental online for Little Rock Arkansas to Hot Springs Arkansas a one hour commute. I gave them my credit card and drivers license at the desk but unfortunately my drivers license was expired 2 weeks before. I couldn’t get a car, couldn’t renew my license online so they refused to rent me a car even though in Illinois we have a grace period. It ended up costing $350 instead of $180 to get me to Hot Springs and back. You’d think that maybe they could make an exception considering I had no alternative other than hiring a ride share driver.

Rented a car on April 2nd

Rented a car on April 2nd, but was mistakenly charged a $500 deposit twice on my debit card. After a phone call, one charge was released. I was told the second one would follow within seven days. That didn’t happen. After ten days, I called again — the employee couldn’t solve it. I asked for the manager to call me back; they said he would, but that never happened either. So we’re just out $500 for a month. Disgraceful.

eMandatory toll charge with no opt-out option – very negative experience


I rented a car for one week with Dollar Rent A Car and had a very negative experience. I was charged US$13 per day for an electronic toll service, without ever requesting or being informed about this charge during the booking process.

When I asked to disable the service, the agent told me that the charge was mandatory and that there was no way to opt-out. This is an abusive practice, especially for tourists who are unaware of these hidden terms.

The lack of transparency and the imposition of unsolicited services is unacceptable. I recommend that Dollar review their practices and offer a real opt-out option for such additional services.

Avoid This Company!!

I booked a car with Dollar Hire Car branch in Antigua St Johns Intl Airport The Dollar representative worked out on a piece of paper the cost of the hire for which came to $710.19USD plus $300USD deposit, of which I took a photo of, I then paid the agreed $1010.19 USD and took the rental car, Reg Number R886. On returning the car on the 28th Jan 2025 I was told by another Dollar Hire Car employees that an error had been made in the calculations and I would only get back $69.40 from my $300 USD deposit although there were no issues with the car and I return it with the same amount of fuel as when collected and returned it at the correct time. I protested and said we had an agreed price and that No one tried to call or contact me saying there was an issue with the cost of the hire car they waited until I returned it. I contacted Dollar Hire Car and registered a complaint and asked how a company of your size agreed a retail cost at time of hiring and then increase the cost when its returned? I ask that Dollar refund my full $300USD (an additional$230.60 USD as I received $69.40 USD).
Dollar complaints told me that the Antigua branch is a franchise and they have no control over them.
I consider this to be fraud as I had agreed to the cost of $710.19USD plus $300USD deposit, The Hire care was returned in the same condition with same amount of fuel which was agreed therefore I should have received the FULL $300USD refund, I can provide full documentation showing retail agreed retail cost and including a note when I returned the car say from the Dollar representative that she had made a mistake.

Worst service ever, they don’t care

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY, YOU CAN’T CALL FOR HELP IN ANY WAY, AND THEY JUST DON’T CARE.
We are very dissatisfied with our experience at dollar. Actually this is the worst experience I’ve had with any car rental company EVER.
The car we rented is a ford mustang convertible.
Our car (well the tree cars we’ve had so far) hasn’t been very good, all three of them has been shacking at high speed and the one we’ve got now is shaking just as bad, and on top of that the alarm for open trunk is constantly beeping, and the car alarm goes off at any time when the car is locked.
and it seems like everywhere we go the answer is the same, (we don’t have any convertibles and we can’t call other dollar departments you will have to drive there and ask them SORRY….)
And now we have been downgraded to another car which is not a convertible because they didn’t have any, but we could have that for now and try the next dollar we came across.

But that is just not good enough we rented a specific car and paid for that.
so when the car is having mechanical issues it should be fixed for us or we should get another car brought to us further up on our journey.

This problem have already drained a lot of our energy and we’re gonna be here for two months from Miami to LA so it is just not okay to have a car like that for that amount of miles.
On top of that the payment system that dollar has, caused us to wait 14 hours at the airport because of the way you draw the money, at last one guy could help us by typing in the card manually, and we thought we were good but that was just the start of our Dollar journey.
I sure hope somebody will see this comment and maybe help us or prevent this from happening to other people.

Customer service helpful- check for spare tire

My girlfriend and I rented a car in Phonix, AZ Aug. 2024. We received our car no problem and it had what we needed for a smooth ride. Unfortunately, we did not think of checking to see if it had a spare tire. We did not get the road hazard insurance, because my friend had AAA.

While in Sedona one tire became flat, it would not hold air. We got to Big O Tires and they told us it had to be replaced, couldn't be patched. AAA does not help you if you need a new tire and Dollar would not help us with no hazard insurance. We purchased a new tire for the Dollar Rent a car.

When we dropped off the car we asked who we would contact to get reimbursed for the tire. After several phone calls my girlfriend got no where. A few months later I send a series of emails and Dollar was very helpful. They reimbursed us no problem once we supplied the receipt from Big O Tires.

Summary- Check to see if you have a spare, get road hazard if you don't. Any problems you have send emails to customer service!

If I could give 0 stars

If I could give 0 stars, I would. I rented a car from them for 18 days. Arrived at the airport at 03:00, and the car I was given was damaged. The Bluetooth was nonfunctional, and the volume button didn't work. When I called to change the vehicle, I was to wait one week before able to get another car. I was given an offer: a 10% discount or return the car and pay the prorated. I wrote email to the Head Office in the US, and 21 days later, I got nothing but the same 10% discount offer. No or assistance from the Head Office. I will be posting photos to prove my point.

They are a scam company hertz had no car for me I contacted dollar and hertz did aswell the guy was so rude he laughed at me on the phone and said we ain't giving you a refund or any money back at all that's the way it works and he cut the phone off put me in a really dark spot

The all risk insurance from Dollar is not recognised by us, you need to get insurance fro Herz at Euro 30,- per day ....! This is how Herz tries to make extra money... Total misleading !

Dollar misrepresented pick up

Filled out all the information ahead of Dollar requested ahead of my arrival to pick up my rental car. The company said I would need to include all picture of my DL and credit card in order to go straight to my rental car. As soon as I completed all that the instructions were to go to the counter. I had to stand in line while and wait along with several others. Then even at the counter my car was ready for quick turn over. I will never use Dollar again. Best car rental is Sixt, but there was not one at the Reno airport. Update: the next day the battery was dead and took 2 hours to jump then I had to return it and get a new car. Wasted half a day.

Extremely dishonest

Extremely dishonest. Always pushing to add extras and charge you extra even without telling you first. Charged me twice. Pushy, rude, dishonest. The desk clerk tried to upsell me a billion things I didn't want. They always do this (I've rented with them many times before but this is the last time)-without telling you a final price, they get you to present your card "to see if it works" and lo and behold you've been charged without being able to agree or check the breakdown of the costs. They insist on charging for everything like airport taxes, premium insurance, toll roads etc even tho in your agreement it clearly states that everything is included. He even insisted I should prepay for fuel, which I don't want to do thanks, then lied about toll roads so that I would pay them an additional 15$ per day (I don't plan on going on any toll roads), insisted I get extra super premium coverage (which was already included in my final price when I booked online, but still he kept adding more $$$) because I'm a woman travelling alone and therefore am an easy target for thieves (I'm speechless), lied about my card being declined (took the $500 deposit TWICE tho before coming up with this lie) and finally after arguing for 30 mins decided to "check" my license again (which was absolutely fine up until that point since all the details had been registered correctly) and told me that it wasn't valid. Lol. What a pathetic excuse to not let me rent a car. Walked across to Budget and literally within seconds got a car. With my absolutely functioning credit card and my very valid driver's license. So, never again Dollar. What a joke. They'll probably respond saying that their new machines didn't recognise my license and other pathetic excuses. Pathetic company. Be ashamed of yourselves.

LDW Charge after it was declined!…

Dollar LDW Charge AFTER IT WAS DECLINED!

Rented during the weather-delayed flights on 3/9 at Orlando. Clearly declined LDW at the counter. Afterwards I see a charge for LDW (almost doubling the cost). I have rental damage coverage via Geico. I will never use Dollar or a Hertz affiliate again.

A big con!!

We were ‘encouraged’ to upgrade as no ski racks were available and the ONLY car they had available would have been too small, we were told it would be a hundred dollars or so. Just had our credit card bill and we have been billed £711 for the upgrade. This is almost two times as much as we paid ‘rental cars’ in the first place. No communication from Dollar and as expected, ‘rental cars’ won’t help. Avoid!!!

5-star experience with Dollar in Maui

We rented a car from Dollar at the airport in Maui, and it was by far the least expensive option. For a 5-day rental, it saved us about $160 less than the next best deal from another company.

We were nervous after reading many negative reviews of Dollar, but decided to take a chance and are very glad we did. Not only was it the cheapest option, but the entire experience, from reserving the car, to picking it up, to returning it was very smooth. We paid exactly what we expected to with no added charges, there was literally no line or wait to pick up the car, and returning it was just as easy & quick.

We found this deal through DiscoverCars.com, which I also highly recommend (and have reviewed separately).
