They're Closing Down

The service in the U.S. basically operated as a prepaid debit card with ACH functionality. Nothing fancy. Euro support is not supported unless you can provide a verified address in the EU/EEA. I did get notified a couple weeks ago that they're shutting down on December 17, 2019. I have until then to use and/or transfer out my balance or they'll write me a check for what is left in the account.

good system and concept until they decided to erase me because they didn't want to work with belgian people anymore. I had privileges as I was part of the first members but they didn't want me to recreate a new account under my wife's name who is american (people who can still use their cards).

Waste of time

Waste of time! Just got notified they are closing services in the Greek market. Denizen had been operating well for the last six months after a horrible launch period where transfer functions would operate normally then vanish inexplicably for months. Overall not worth it... It's a risk you take with any Fintech start up and the come on will usually far exceed what can be delivered for any sustained period without constant minor changes, usually fee increases. Bottom line: Just don't expect anything good to last...

F**king miserable

Ever since I signed up with Denizen, things have been a mess. Things have never properly worked on the app, it's really a bad design and totally unreliable. I've had trouble linking banks, sending money, and I recently tried to pay my credit card with this bank and it was returned twice resulting in big fees and an accidental carried balance. The customer service is not good either, people are nice enough but they seem to have no idea what's going on. I was really hoping this would work because banking between the US and Germany sucks, but I guess I'll have to try something else.

I know it's tempting because they have no fees but do yourself a favor and just AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

Untrustworthy

Denizen made big promises, but after signing up and using their banking service for several months, they send a notice saying that my account would be closed and my card revoked, because they are withdrawing their service in the Irish market. Doesn't just make them appear untrustworthy, but also fintech as a whole.

The app is horrible and lack of…

The app is horrible and lack of internet browser portal is very bad, however the fees and the way the account functions is great. They REALLY need to fire their lead developer and CIO to make some decent advances on the app side. They seem like they really don't know what they're doing for the phone app. I understand it's not easy but you guys don't look serious at all because of this crappy app that won't update external account balances and sometimes approved or denied transactions won't even show up at all until a week after contacting support. Not to mention that half the time the card won't work on the internet and some countries' ATM's. My free credit union checking account in the USA at Navy Federal only charges 1% for foreign transactions and reimburses worldwide ATM fees up to $10 a month so honestly, Denizen, your offer is NOT that phenomenal. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE improve the app ASAP and give us an internet site for an online portal to access online banking through a web browser.

Happy, at last!

OK. Finally it happened. I had to wait a pretty long time to see everything fixed, but they made it.
Transfers work also well, both ways (bank accounts to card and vice-versa).
Now i am a happy customer. For sure support still shows room for improvement but i believe it has to do with sins of youth.
It works, and whatever is in my contract got respected so far.

*Update* Bank resolved issue

I really tried to give this bank a chance but they have displayed either gross incompetence or negligence and it makes me afraid to have any money with them any longer (I have tried to close my account and transfer my funds out a week ago but they still have not, despite their promise of "immediate" account closure on their website).

Simply put, I noticed my account balance seemed higher than I expected back in early January. I asked Denizen why this was and to rectify it, and they just said they would "look into it and get back" to me. I followed up many times over the next few days and weeks and would not get a response. I even asked what should be a very straightforward question once of "what is my account balance?" and they would not tell me.

So in February I assumed that I was being crazy and my account balance was fine. I spent down my account and added to it with seemingly no problem.

Now in April I try to transfer money to fund a down payment for my house. Denizen froze my account and for weeks would not tell me why. I even call and they just say "I cannot answer, but I promise I will have my manager call you back right away with an explanation" and I would wait and receive no call or message, even after a week. I finally ask to close my account and transfer the money out, and I get a call saying OK but they just realized my account balance was wrong so they are going to deduct nearly $4,000 from my account first.

Do not trust this bank if you a) value knowing how much money is in your account, b) want to trust that you have the ability to spend the money that is in your account, and/or c) want to work with an company that will respond (note: in my case, I went MONTHS without getting a response, both via email and phone) to customer service questions or requests for help.

**Update: Since posting this review, the bank has provided compensation for most of the amount in question. I appreciate the bank took the issue seriously and hope they continue to improve their operations and customer service.

Great

I'm sorry to read negative reviews but the experiences often vary from person to person and from different situations, I'm totally satisfied with the services offered by Denizen and I think that at the moment is the best solution for those traveling especially outside U.E. and often uses currency other than the euro. I am a Founding Member and Denizen in addition to a change for me correct refund the various commissions that the banks apply during withdrawals. A few months ago, as someone remembered, has reclaimed 80 euros as a gift to have used the card, honestly I've never seen such a thing ...

I closed my account after 3 months

I closed my account after 3 months. Totally unreliable; security blocks as you move between countries that take 4 or so days to unblock; unreliable ledger; slow posting of deposits; and virtually absent customer service. For a card servicing a globa community they are so far off the mark they and Compass should be embarrassed.

Reply from Denizen

I'm very sorry to hear this & I would very much like to hear more bout the problems you mention with security blocks - was this possibly related to changing permanent primary residence addresses between countries? While that scenario can indeed cause some delays due to stringent regulatory constraints, normal traveling between countries poses no problems and requires no changes to your account.

Hidden fees!

The exchange rate is even worse than traditional banks. There's a huge difference between payments while they're pending and after they are completed. Probably some hidden fees or something...

As an American living in Spain

As an American living in Spain, I have high hopes for Denizen. The promise of an easier banking experience, moving money to/from my US accounts to Euro or Spanish accounts, is one that I very much look forward to.

Unfortunately, the user experience on the app is hot garbage right now. It's just super non-intuitive and moving money around is difficult. The font sizes are tiny and the data presentation is terrible.

These guys have a LONG way to go if they want to improve their product.

5 Stars! Simple, Fee Free, and easy to use! LOVE IT!

Had absolutely no issue getting my Denizen card. I have used it for the past 2 months with 0 issues. The on-boarding DOES requires you to have a valid passport and SSN/EU Tax ID! So, if you try to establish an account and do not have one of those, you won't get an account (Which is normal for ANY bank account) * Saw a review where someone complained and I am sure that was why they couldn't get an account. Nothing worse than someone that can't follow the rules, and then makes a fuss when they can't color outside the lines.

And unlike Transferwise, I have not had ANY transfer fees or FX fee's! Cash out of bank ATM's are fee free, and I can track the balance in my US, German and Spanish accounts in one app! LOVE IT!!!!!! 5 stars!

I have been a remote consultant for 2 years now and I lose about $400 a year to bank fees. This bank/account is saving me lots of money and time. I feel much more proud and confident when I send invoices to clients. I wish this was around 5 years ago when I was an expat. Great service. They respond very quickly.
