DAZ Studio User Since Ver. 3

I've been using DAZ Studio since version 3, and buying from their online catalog. Some of the negative reviews here are about individual products from their catalog. Each artist who lists on DAZ is responsible for their own quality control, not DAZ, who is a broker. They do hire artists and put out products, which are clearly marked as DAZ Originals.
The DAZ Studio software is excellent, and in my opinion, far easier to learn and use than any other 3D software. I used Poser for years [Poser 6-11] and I had trouble getting a good render, though many artists did, so I don't fault the software but my expertise. I had little trouble getting up to speed with DAZ and do my own book covers, so most of them have my characters done in DAZ models with Genesis 8.

The times I've contacted tech support, I've gotten good answers. I usually do this through the forums. Answers come quickly from DAZ and other artists. The community is active and know a lot.

Most problems with DAZ are when you're using an external directory to store your assets. DAZ likes to store things on the C: drive. Following their instructions when installing to other drives prevents most problems.

I do have a complaint that most of my products I've bought don't show up in Smart Content, which is supposed to auto-detect stuff. Artists are supposed to make that happen, though. I wish the programmers would write something in to automate that for us.

Overall, DAZ is easy to use, and I can use the default male and female models to get a decent picture of my character in about an hour. The first download of DAZ includes these default models up to and including Genesis 9, their most advanced, and clothing, hair, background scenery and props. It is easy to load the character, add hair, model the character to features you had in mind, give it a body shape that pleases you, clothe it, and there are props and poses for standing, running, sitting down, etc. You can even do animation like wind blowing hair and clothing on certain models, and animate a starting pose to an ending pose fairly easily. There are special effects such as explosions, but I haven't tried those.

I've used Poser, and it's not nearly as easy. I also use VUE 2016 [not the latest version] for landscapes. It's not as easy as simply loading a model into DAZ and navigating it. DAZ has also become easier to use over the years. Anyone who has tried to use Blender, also a free 3D software, will also find that 3D is hard! The top 3D softwares can take years to learn. DAZ took 3D and made it fairly simple to learn and use, and it works well for my book covers. There are many good tutorials out there, but the ones DAZ provides are good, too. Anything I've wanted to do on a book cover, I've found help that was pretty specific to my needs.

I've bought many thousands of items from DAZ over the years. Never had a problem with paying through PayPal or getting an item I knew I bought but didn't show in my inventory. There was an item that I thought I bought, but couldn't find my proof because it was old. The person gave me the benefit of the doubt, and the item. This was years ago. I haven't had any recent problems.

There are free items most every Wednesday. Some are very old, but a lot of DAZ users still use the older models when making a very complex render or animation because of the lower vertex counts. They take less system resources.

I highly recommend this software. It's free, and the catalog of DAZ models is vast. You can find models that are DAZ compatible on sites like Renderosity, and you can also import many formats of 3D models from still other sites to use in your scenes.

As for the copyright issues some reviewers complained about, it is your responsibility to read the documentation included and pay attention to licensing. There are models in the DAZ catalog that are not licensed for commercial use. This is usually spelled out in the ReadMe files, and those are available to read online before you buy. As someone who is very careful about copyright issues, since I'm an author, I go over every ReadMe with an eye towards what I'm enabled to do with my renders. Rendering is making a 2-dimensional picture from my 3-dimensional model or group of models. There are also licenses for putting this model in a game or movie. So it is up to the end user to determine this, and if you aren't sure, you can always contact the individual artist. There are a lot of fan art items on DAZ. DAZ does have a legal department, and they do take down items eventually, that are determined to be a copyright violation. But, if I want to use an item on my book cover, I need to be careful that it doesn't look similar to a movie item or location. The legal penalty will come down on me, not DAZ or even the artist, at least at first. So I need to be careful. It's not DAZ's fault if I overlook the licensing info.

I bought a model for my animator, Terrible Lieing Company

I bought a model for my animator. The model we choose was gorgeous. My animator shared after a very long download and issues with it, the model looks nothing like what we purchased. It looks like it is a model attempt from 20 years ago. He wrote the company and it is more than 3 days now and they have not answered. I notice Daz3d never responds to anyone who writes here on trust pilot.

Selling copyrighted material, predatory FOMO tactics, buggy website

While always utilizing predatory FOMO tactics (pricing products way above their competition to then offer sales somewhere around 75-98% off), in the past months they have totally gone overboard.

For months they have had problems with the mandatory cookie setting popups, but instead of fixing them they keep blaming customers for using "the wrong browser" (everything chrome-based), not clearing their cache often enough or other half-baked excuses.

Quite a few of their vendors are using unlicensed IPs, most of the time without notifying the customer that their designs are derivative. The company's reaction to those products being reported is to double down, claiming that it's totally save to use those products in commercial projects.

They actively try to hide the fact they are providing trackers for three major ad services, openly lying on their forums when asked about it.

Information like products already purchased are for some strange reason stored on the user client, so with the cookies not working correctly products you own still show up as not purchased.

As of late their quality control has gone downhill, products don't install, are missing files, don't work in recent versions of their software (despite claiming they do on the product page), lack compression, and so on.

Customer service, at one point their strongest field, has become abyssal. Customers are blamed for technical problems and are told to just leave if they don't like how things are handled there.

As of late, they raised their already ludicrous prizes, while at the same time cutting down on special sales.

Also, be aware that at any time they can change a product you bought into something not even vaguely resembling the model you paid for. They recently did so with a product, without even letting buyers know.

Program Will Not Install

I've been wanting to use Bryce 7 Pro for some time now. I finally earned a bit extra to afford it. (I'm on a limited income so that $26 cost of it was needed to be earned as 'extra'.) I downloaded the exe file from my account page, as the instructions stated. I have attempted to install the program 3 times and it still does not install. The uninstaller works just fine though! I have uploaded a video of my installation nightmare on my YouTube channel, @krazyvenomttv. My order number for this program was DA24-****-****-****-11FF. A staff member from Daz can contact me for exact order number info, as most of it was hidden from this post on purpose.

Dishonest buy-in advertising

Dishonest buy-in advertising. That is, “if you buy this, expect this at a later date”. Very American-law approach in how they word things that in most jurisdictions falls under false advertising.

Anyone attempting to discuss the issue openly and in an adult manner on their forums will have their posts deleted for reasons such as “speculation”, “accusatory language” and other value judgements. These are people who are saying “hey, I bought this thing and expected this other thing”. Unfortunately, Daz moderators appear petrified of any discussion that calls into the question the validity of sales copy past the point of a sale. They’re very happy to address cart issues while sales are in progress and the forum is littered with posts explaining the problem with current sales campaigns (there’s even a very large thread for those), but getting them to honour past problems, particularly with sales wording, is impossible.

The software is nice. Definitely grab yourself the free copy, but get your assets elsewhere. And if you do shop at Daz, know the software inside out as a lot of the things they’ll try to sell you can be easily done yourself. If you take their own conte t out of the equation, it’s essentially a glorified mods market with high pressure sales tactics that use sales copy that wouldn’t stand in most courts of the world.

Overly complicated

Overly complicated and a massive download.... Yet when I open the app, I see very little content installed - Could be me, I know, but I have been using various 3D applications for years. (I 'returned' to Daz after first trying it a number of years ago... Thinking it may be the answer to my finishing a graphic novel I started.)

I'm sure it's a good app, but for me it is complex and not intuitive... Perhaps I'm better off with other 3D applications, that I work with.

DA22-1007-FF67-AAF3-90AF

Order number: DA22-1007-FF67-AAF3-90AF
Date of purchase: Fri, 07 Oct 2022 04:57:57 UTC
Item: Victoria 9 HD Presale
Dear Daz,
I purchased this Product on October 7, 2022, and I downloaded it from My Daz Studio Assets located in Daz Central. It downloaded and it installed just fine in my Daz Studio 4.20 Pro and everything with the product worked really well when I opened it up in a file and rendered it. Then I closed Daz Studio and Shut My PC down as I usually do. So, when I received your questionnaire asking if I received the product Victoria 9 HD Presale, I answered that I had.

So, after a couple of days, I fired up Daz Studio again and searched for the location of Victoria 9 HD, and I could not locate it anywhere in Daz Studio on any of my PCs. So, I opened up My Daz Studio Assets in Daz Central to reload Victoria 9 HD Presale, and It's not there either! I had it for a brief period of time and now it's not there. So, I had to change my answer to, that I have not received the product.

Maybe you can solve this problem and contact me by email.

Sincerely,
James E. Henry
