Hi Rezwana. We are sorry that the policy didn't provide you with the cover you were expecting. Having reviewed the circumstances of the case, we feel it's very unlikely that any travel insurance policy available would have provided reimbursement.

Instead, it sounds like there may be some fault with your package holiday provider and, if you haven't done so already, we would recommend you take this matter up with them as it appears that they are the ones who have not actually delivered on the service you paid them for.

No help or more important no advise what to do at all after we experienced cancellation of our flight and many unpleasant situations after that.

Hi Milena. Thank you for raising your concerns. When submitting a claim, it appears you have done this via our online claims process and indicating you had cancelled the trip. As this is only covered where the cancellation is due to certain circumstances, your claim was declined.

We will ask our claims team to contact you to discuss the case further as it looks like the claim should have instead been submitted as a Travel Delay Abandonment claim. Subject to review, this may have a different outcome.

Rubbish customer service when claiming

I made a claim for theft which was rejected. I have been taking out travel insurance every trip abroad throughout my life (I'm 65) and made 3 or 4 claims during that lifetime. My claim with Columbus was theft of a bag from a ground level hotel room with an open window that had no security in Calais. We made no police report as we had a train to catch. The hotel said we were liars (well they would) - it's Calais. Our advice - don't book a hotel room in Calais and certainly not on ground floor. There was 4 months left to run on the policy but no refund for cancelling the policy. The customer service from Columbus is my complaint. Multiple agents were dealing with my case over many weeks/months repeating the same questions and asking for a 'hotel report' which I asked to see stated in the T&Cs. I can certainly give a report TO the hotel for its rubbish security.

In response to Columbus below: they take the trouble to respond only to not read what I wrote. Also, my expectation of refund (pro rata) on the 4 months left to run is unused time, not my complaint.

Thanks for sharing your experience. We asked you for some more details so we could look into this for you and try to understand what has happened and what we could have done better. As you have not responded, we can only give some general feedback.

In the event of a claim for a theft, all travel insurers would expect such a matter to have been reported to the authorities so the incident could be investigated.

As for a refund of premium, we would generally only refund premium where there are exceptional circumstances. Unfortunately, this would not include a scenario where a customer is unhappy with management of a claim.

Claims take far too long to settle

As with other reviews, claims take an unacceptable time to be settled. Claim was entered early August and all requested evidence was given within two weeks.
As of today, despite a number of chasing emails, I still have no idea when this will be settled, as no one at Columbus responds to requests for this information. Somewhat horrified by other reviews where 6 months or more have passed before settlement!

A great audio treat

I am enjoying this audio book more than I thought I would!
The story is thought provoking. The narration is really great. And im learning new phrases like

Columbus made getting travel insurance easy - excellent

I have used Columbus twice now and have found the online application process very clear and straightforward. I have had queries on the medical declaration and when I asked for help the response was quick and very helpful.
Columbus made the process easy and I would recommend them.

Useless, it's been 8 months and counting...

I have always used Columbus Direct for my travel insurance and have never until now had to make a claim. After my experience with them, I will never be using them again. I am still waiting to hear back from Columbus Direct for a claim I submitted back in February. I have provided all necessary documents to them but they have done nothing. The last email from them was back in July telling me they are still experiencing delays and despite many emails from myself, since then, I have heard absolutely nothing. I doubt I shall ever hear from them again or see a penny regarding my claim so for this reason I cannot recommend their services to anyone. Unfortunately, I have learnt the hard way and have lost a lot of money. You get what you pay for. From now on I will pay more for an insurance company with a better service and reputation.

UPDATE: It seems I should have complained earlier as, within a matter of hours from writing this review, my claim has now been approved! Such a shame it took so long to get a response but I am happy with the outcome now. Thank you, Columbus Direct.

It was good insurance to go with

It was good insurance to go with. I did get paid out but i had to ring a week later as they had forgot to send my money back to me. Im abit gutted that im going away next year and the insurance is nearly £51 rather than the price i paid last year of just under £36.

Customer Service Could be Better!

The cover offered by the policy is first class and excellent value for money. Customer service however, could be far better. It was almost impossible to contact a customer advisor in order to discuss an issue which was not helped by slow email responses. In fairness however, when I did finally get to speak to a customer advisor my problem was sorted without issue.

Unresponsive- no clear channels to…

Unresponsive- no clear channels to access a refund. No response from customer service.

I was eligible to cancel my policy within a 14 day cooling off period. Yet when I got through to CD - the lines had been closed. There was no way for a customer to reach a team member. My request for refund, has not been acknowledged- nor has any money been returned.

I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND.
Zero stars.

We had reached out to you for more information so that we could try to assist on this matter but you hadn't responded. Fortunately, an enquiry to our contact centre based on your username led us to find the issue anyway but note that this had already been resolved with a full refund being made to you the day after you uploaded this post. We appreciate that you had emailed us around 8 days earlier but we couldn't trace this but as soon as the 2nd email came through, our team took the appropriate action. We are sorry for this inconvenience.

We do have an online chat function that is available to customers during normal office hours and we would normally look to respond to emails within 48 hours. We acknowledge that we are not currently offering a telephone service but we continue to monitor our position regarding this.
