Great responsive customer service helped address and resolve a question about reactivation of my account super promptly. And no holding on a call or having to chase emails required.
I have received an email which says that Co-Wheels are going to stop people being able to use smartcards to unlock the cars, and will mandate use of the phone app instead. I do not have a smartphone and, for many reasons, do not wish to, so I will soon be effectively excluded from the service.
It’s a shame because I have been using using Co-Wheels for two years, unlocking and locking the cars with my card with no problem, and the customer service has been excellent. It has meant I haven’t had to buy a car.
Co-Wheels state that due to ‘security’, they will change the process so that the app is the only way to unlock their cars. Apparently the problem is that ‘smart cards can be used by multiple people without any need for authentication’.
The Co-Wheels website states, ‘Co Wheels was set up to provide an environmentally friendly, socially just, community-based alternative to car ownership…….. making lower-emission transport operations available to everyone.’ It seems they will now have to change this wording as they are no longer interested in being socially just and making their transport operations available to everyone.
Is it really the case that the use of smart cards is so large a problem that it’s worth restricting customer choice to such an extent and making the service unavailable to current users? I also cannot believe that there is no method outside of the use of an app on a personal smartphone which would provide adequate security. Either this is lazy thinking from Co-Wheels, or they have some other motive.
I am very disappointed at this move by Co-Wheels.

I struggled to load my details and access new account set-up - my error, not the platform - the Co Wheels team were so patient, supportive, and considerate in getting me over the line - really installs confidence. Thank you.

Customer service was great today. I haven’t used Co-wheels in a while and had to get a lot updated and verified. The agent was so helpful and responded quickly to my emails and everything got done successfully. Thank you.

We've been members of various car clubs around the country including Zipcar (RIP), Enterprise and Co-wheels and I would rate Co-wheels as the best in terms of availability, convenient location of vehicles, value for money and customer service. Please bring Co-wheels down south too to fill the gaping hole (and parking spaces) left by Zipcar!

Really friendly helpful people and a great service: good for people and good for the environment.

I've used Co-Wheels many times now after switching from Enterprise Car Club and don't think I'll be switching back to Enterprise or anyone else for a good while. Prices are fair for what you get and customer service is friendly, they're eager to help resolve any issues and have an excellent response time, unlike other car clubs... It's just some people renting these cars and leaving them in sad state that is an issue but that is to be expected with most rentals (depends on your luck and their manners), other than that, I haven't had any issues that are expected to be experienced on the regular with other bigger rental companies (just check their Trustpilot reviews and you'll see what issues I'm on about, they're low for a reason).
It'd be nice to see more vehicles around town with some variety but the MG line already works well and I'm happy enough using this service.

Jordan has been very helpful with paperwork and queries (and indeed the rest of the callers when i needed assistance or advice)

Co-wheels has put a car near me and I am so happy. We used to be regular users of Zipcar and then they closed. I have had some difficulty parking due to bikes being parked in the car bay (grrr) and the co-wheels team have always been really responsive.

Incredible that a car-sharing company expects to acquire customers with an app this broken. The account creation process is blocked entirely by an absurd password requirement asking for at least 16 characters. Even tech giants like Google and Facebook don't demand this kind of friction. Between this poor UX and the flood of other one-star reviews complaining about the same thing, it's clear management isn't paying attention. You are undoubtedly losing countless potential customers over a basic login barrier.
Update:
I saw the team response. The issue is not of the strong password, the last time i checked i was not able to create any sensible password even with the ones that are acceptable by the tech giants of meta, google etc...

I had Co-Wheels account initially in Glasgow, and closed it when I moved to London. Now that there are more cars in London, I have opened an account here and have been really pleased with the services. I can find cars nearby and can choose from different options. I think the prices are fair, and the per mileage fee means that you don't have to worry about insurance or fuel, which is a peace of mind when you have to give the car back. I have had a great experience with customer support, whether by email or by phone, I have consistently been helped. For me, it has been the better of the car clubs that I have to deal with. The cars that I rent are also great as they have modern features like rear-view cameras for parking, and cruise control. One advice for customer service is that initially I only had the application, and later the card. I think that customer service should advise users to have a card and take it with them, as if your phone or data. fails, the card allows you to unlock the car.

I tried to cancel my registration and they make you request cancellation by email. The rapidly rejected my request to cancel. Be wary of sites that make it difficult for you to cancel your account. Very very unhappy about this.

Extremely disappointing experience. My application was rejected because Co Wheels claimed I had "bad credit" and was considered "high risk". When I asked for clarification, the explanation I received was simply, "It means you have bad credit." Despite providing evidence that my Experian score is 1051/1250 and rated Very Good, they refused to explain the discrepancy or provide any meaningful details.
What made it worse was their refusal to let me speak with a manager, stating that a manager would "only provide the same response". The customer service felt dismissive, unhelpful, and lacking transparency. Responses also tended to arrive very late in the day, making the process unnecessarily frustrating.
Based on my experience, I would not recommend Co Wheels to anyone expecting fair treatment or professional customer service.
