Outstanding Service from Manuel Antunes – Branch 0141 (Barreiro)
I had the pleasure of being assisted by Manuel Antunes at Branch 0141 in Barreiro, and I can confidently say he is one of the best bank representatives I’ve ever dealt with. He is confident, well-educated, presentable, and incredibly knowledgeable. Despite a number of questions from our side, he remained patient, clear, and supportive throughout the entire interaction.
Manuel’s professionalism and people skills truly stood out. In my opinion, he would be an excellent candidate to manage VIP accounts. I left a thank-you note for him at the branch — and I’m leaving this one here too, because he absolutely deserves the recognition.
One of the worst experiences of my life
One of the worst experiences of my life
They have not allowed me any way to access a significant amount of money in my account.
I spent 1 hour in the bank doing some yearly update and despite telling the manager of the issue and the fact I had a plane to catch he gave me a trainee.
Then he made me queue again to withdraw my money which took another hour.
I am a 61 year old Doctor and this is the first time in 40 years I have ended up in tears due to the manager sheer nastiness.
Never ever go to this bank you will not get your money out without begging and being belittled, what a nightmare!!!
Blocking Accounts should be against the law!
I've never encountered such poor service from a bank as with Caixa Geral Depositos. Despite holding our funds, they seem determined to complicate the process of withdrawing money or making transfers. Their app is absolutely dreadful. The staff are unhelpful and rarely answer phone calls. They have a tendency to arbitrarily freeze accounts without justification. What gives them the authority to block accounts holding substantial funds that rightly belong to the account holders? Avoid this bank at all costs; they're completely incompetent.
Worst bank ever
Worst bank ever. No support, blocking card for nothing, no help and only troubles. Never open account with caixa.
It is hard to call them as a bank
It is hard to call them as a bank. Probably, the worst bank on the globe. I can not do any transaction because the SMS codes are not reaching me. I have called the customer service many times. To speak in English you have to dial 1. Then you wait for more than 15 minutes, and then guess what? Somebody talks to you in Portuguese saying that she don't speak English? Why did I dial 1 then? (These international calls cost you a lot of money and at the end no solution at all. I have send many e-mails and none of them were replied. It is like that you are talking to the walls.
Worst possible bank.
Worst possible bank.
Their app doesn't work.
Simple transfers don't work.
If you are trying to pay anywhere after midnight? You probably won't be able to pay and is an embarrassment because you have to literally say that you have money but you can't pay ( imagine a date in a bar or something like that). Airports? The app plus card decided to stop working. Abroad? Expect no support whatsoever and suspense because you never know if you can proceed with little payments. But their main worry should be their app. I've never seen something so technologically stuck in time. Plus they have a matriz card with random numbers, which if you need to make a transfer to pay a rent abroad it asks you for those numbers. Nobody has time or patience to carry another card with loads of numbers just to make a simple transfer. It's a ridiculous bank with ridiculous service. They constantly call you to offer credit loans, only for you to explain you don't want or need, and as soon as you try it, they reject those same loans they called you in for the first place.

They cancled my card completely for no reason and sent no notification nothing about that. I was in emergency need for money at that moment, called the agents to help me, none of them could speak, maybe i tried to contact like 20 times and spoke to 10 different people who couldnt speak english.
In the end they tell me my card was blocked and they will call when they fix it. I am still waiting and mad because I didnt choose this bank but my university did.
And I am helpless here.
Pathetic Service for English customers
This morning I went to order cat food but my transaction did not go through and yet, I knew there was circa 500 euro in my CGD account. I checked on my CGD app and could see the whole lot had been removed to leave a balance of '0' - against description it just said 'Classic'. I knew it wasn't the mortgage and my wife and I did not use the card today. I simply wanted to understand what this was for but it has proved impossible.
I initially logged onto my account and tried to send email but you can't send a message to CGD without selecting 1 of 3 'drop down message subject heading ' which is totally irrelevant for the query - 'proof of income', 'proof of insurance' and an 'exception support' had prefilled in messages totally irrelevant that you couldn't type over. What's the point of that?
Secondly, I knew that asking for a call back service to a nominated phone was a total waste of time as I tried that previously. Not only does it take days as there are 'no slots available' but when you do get the call it's not from a person but from the Portuguese robot with options that just match calling them directly. Utter nonsense
Thirdly, I try and phone them directly (multiple times). You get some comfort when you hear an option whereby you can 'select English' but that's short lived as once selected and upon hearing in English that the 'phone call will be recorded' it just reverts back to Portuguese. In the event you randomly press '1' and actually get put through to someone they don't speak English and tell you they will put you through - only for you to go full circle back to Portuguese robot which invariably then hangs up on you. I've tried phoning 3 times this morning without any success - I even tried a UK contact but that put me through to someone in Asia (service centre) who cut me off.
The only option left is to drive to my nearest branch (nearly an hour round trip) in the hope I can speak to someone to clarify why all funds were taken in a single unrecognised transaction.
Pathetic
12/12/23 So I went into branch Ansaio and spoke with CGD rep. and she clarified that the sum was a credit card payment. I was unaware that CGD default terms of credit usage is 100% payback unless you manually change this %. In the UK the normal amount taken each month is credit balance interest only not 100%. Why I had to drive over there and not be able to clarify over the phone or from an email is backward for an international bank.
savage CGD BANK
one of the most savage banks ever i experienced corrupt, racist, and has no respect for foreigners who bring business to their bank. most old ladies are dealing with customers with no respect and savage pathetic ironic smiles. they block online access without any reason, they have a reason that we are using from out of Europe etc i travel around the world where developed countries and also under developed countries but in pathetic service CGD bank , they dont care , they don't know anything so ignorant people i never seen in my life
After hearing comments from other…
After hearing comments from other unhappy people, I realized that, I'm not alone and the waters surrounding the CGD are very polluted. I have inquired to a senior public servant from CGD about my passbook savings account, dates start from 2001 until 2010 showing only 18ct credit interest on 2009.
I was told by this senior public servant, CGD stops paying interest on savings accounts.
If this is the case why they credit 18ct from 2001 to 2010 (almost ten years)?
And why they still calling this a Savings Account? Statements showing only expenses, no credit interest.
I think something is very wrong.
In this article, Posted 25 June, 2019 by essential business it says, Caixa no longer to pay interest on accounts under €6,670
State-run Caixa Geral de Depósitos will cease paying interest on current accounts with less than
€6,670. During years I had my account with a substantial amount of over $6,670.
Any thoughts about this issue?
What a terrible bank this is
What a terrible bank this is. Been with them for a couple of years now, but the service is way below average when it comes to solving issues.
I have sent them several messages, even went into the office to address the unnecessary blocking of my card for "my safety" and they simply do not reply or phone me back as they promised me after my visit.
Can't use my card, so what is the point of having an account with them, if they won't solve this?
From all the banks I used in the passed I am used to being helped immidiately when I don't have access to my own money. As for looking out for my safety, the safety of my money is also my responsability. If i do not take care of my security codes, this is my own fault. So no need to block my cards when i try to make an online purchase 2 times in a row. The reason it was 2 times, is because the damn thing never seems to work, that is why I try to make the purchase again.
Total rubbish and disrespectful for letting me wait over a week now and not offering any help to unblock my cards.
Terrible service
Terrible service, waited over 45 minutes for someone to answer the phone and never got anyone.
Caixa directa App is another terrible application doesn't update ontime, I get entries that I didn't do and it is very difficult to talk with someone.
Avoid them.

CGD should be embarrassed to have an employee running its branch in Johannesburg. Alvaro Legoinha has his own ideas on how to run a branch. This man has no customer care, his ill-mannered and disrespectful to say the least. Its disgusting!!!!! Caixa Geral....best you look into this before everyone closes their accounts!!! Pathetic service!
Incredible scam - Impossible to close account (fees still payable)
Incredible scam - I have had a student bank account for a while but now I have no use for it anymore and the commission-free period is expiring as I am not a student anymore. I tried to delete the account but it is IMPOSSIBLE. They want you to physically go to a bank in order to do that, but I do not live anymore in Portugal and therefore it is not easy for me. Unbelievable the fact that it is impossible to close the account remotely (phone/app), or via a delegate or via mail. Customer service is non-existent. I will ask for legal counsel if they charge me money.
huge stress
employees are kind, as are the Portuguese in general, and being a state bank, we believe our funds are safe. however, it is very stressful dealing with this bank as a foreigner. the options for choosing english do not always work, account access gets frozen for accessing from another country (apparently), getting it unfrozen is a huge hassle. one time, we were asked to provide the client number, but gave the contract number by mistake. we were not allowed to correct it and had to wait for an international certified mail. this was during covid. all in all we have not had access to the account for many months over a period of 7 years. we dread calling CGD. now waiting for a call back, it did not come in the promised time slot. UPDATE: NO CALL BACK YET, IT'S BEEN 12 DAYS! WE CALLED THREE TIMES, NO CALL BACK.. SO DOWNGRADING FROM 2 TO 1 STARS AND LODGING A COMPLAINT WITH THE PORTUGUESE CENTRAL BANK VIA THE COMPLAINT BOOK
sms activation.
Help me get my sms code sorted! Multiple forms signed and returned and 12 months later I am still trying. No response from this financial organisation. This is frustrating and causing anxiety trying to work with the team in Portugal. Spent over 2 hours on the phone today with the call center and the representative wanted to send a further form! No, you have my form tell me why it hasn’t happened. If I could fly international (based in Australia) and to Portugal the first thing I would do would be to close down this account down.
Invest your money in a drug cartel, and you'll get a better service than this.
Being a client of this bank feels like buying trafficked goods in the black market. One would expect that, since they sell their poor services at a ridiculous price, the customer service would be of excellence, BUT ALSO NO!
A company that allows itself to provide their customer with such poor interactions should simply close doors forever. Not this one, though. This one charges their clients for their incompetence and inability when it comes to provide efficiency and transparency. Furthermore, given their lack of attention to detail (and clients' satisfaction), and lack of competence in general, when they are faced with a client that requests to be assisted in English, they speak louder Portuguese. After realizing that "Slower Portuguese" does not count as English, they bluntly hang up the calls - probably a reflection of their own incapability to deal with a wide range of customers, or simply a reflection of how much they do (not) care about their clients' needs.
The worst bank in history
Do not even bother with this sorry excuse of a bank. Since I opened an account with them I have been dealing with countless headaches. Their customer service is absolutely horrible and their employees are clueless and incapable of even doing the most basic things like opening a bank account or making deposits etc... I just can’t wait to get rid of this account. What a nightmare. I cannot say anything positive about it at all and don’t understand how they manage to operate to this day.
