I was referred by someone . I usually use Hotwire or Expedia. I rented a car online for Italy. When I got there, the rental car company that was used via car carigami - rentalcars.com, said I need an international drivers licence. Which is fine if carigami advised me at the time if booking, so I could book elsewhere that doesn't require it . Nope, they only provided me terms and conditions in French and expected me to read the fine print. Based on me providing information that I am from outside EU, providing the terms in English and to highlight the need for a international driver's licence would have been expected. All I asked was to refund the cancelation and was denied. In any case, I went to the next rental car beside rentalcars.com and rented a car with my north American license for cheaper. I am reposting this March 21, 2022 post as my original post was removed for some reason.
Update - it should have been made clear that an International Driver's Licence was required clearly not in fine print. The other major rental car operators use north American drivers licence. To not refund my money when I didn't rent a car or one wouldn't be rented to me is just stealing my money. Thanks for a a horrible experience.
