£1700 deposit paid and no work carried out, deposit refund agreed at the start of December but still not returned and were now being ignored.

We paid £1700 in cash on 19th August 2025 to Neil Pearson as a deposit for a porch renovation, with the work agreed in writing to be completed in September or October.

After the agreed timeframe passed and I had heard nothing, I began chasing the company. I spoke to a representative on 24th October and was told to call back on 27th October, which I did. I was then informed by Richard Pearson that a surveyor would be arranged.

When I still received no further updates, I called again on 5th November and was given the same explanation. On 6th November I received a voicemail, and on 7th November I was told that a surveyor would call that day. A call was made to a landline without an answerphone, so no contact was established and no appointment was arranged.

At this point, the agreed timeframe had already passed and no meaningful progress had been made despite several attempts. I therefore cancelled the contract in writing on 8th November due to the failure to carry out the service within a reasonable timeframe.

The company initially stated that a refund was not possible due to being outside the 14 day cooling off period. However, my case was based on the fact that the service had not been carried out within a reasonable timeframe.

On 4th December after multiple emails, Richard Pearson agreed to issue a full refund and his secretary requested my bank details. I was relieved and thought that would be the end of it.

Despite this agreement, and multiple follow-up emails and phone calls since then, with repeated assurances that the refund would be processed, no payment has been received as of 25th March.

We are now having to pursue a recovery of the £1700 through the small claims court process which was recommended by citizens advice; and this is stressful and time consuming.

I would still prefer to resolve this matter directly and receive the agreed refund but Richard Pearson will not respond to my emails.

disgusted

Not impressed , turned out to be a huge mistake hiring them , supposed to put a new roof on my workshop. first rain there was more water inside the workshop than outside, I cancelled the payment straight away as advised, I reported this to them, they turned up with a caulking gun and a couple of tiny tins of paint to repair a brand new roof , REPAIR A BRAND NEW ROOF??? what on earth were they thinking?? new roof does not require repairing! This turned out to be a huge waste of time with MORE damage to my property, at present I have four buckets inside and they cannot cope!, I have left emails asking them to come and collect their roof but so far Joe Doran has told me they will not remove the roof however it will remain the property of Britannia home improvements .I would not recommend them to anyone

Britannia Home Improvements (EY) Ltd

First contact was from Neil Pearson (owner Richard Pearson's uncle I think) and his previous sales colleague give you the sell that they employ all their workers directly and don't contract out the work. They want a hefty deposit at point of agreeing any contract. Paid directly into the owner's personal account. They say the work is guaranteed, even if the company hits hard times and dissolves.
BUT they DO contract out their windows, doors, GRP and conservatory work - the workforce arrived all wearing Norton Windows logo on their shirts. Now the GRP work has failed within 4 years of being done, the contractor tried to tell me there was nothing wrong with the roof and, having eventually realised he couldn't get away with that line as I'd been able to see and feel it myself, he said I needed to call him in a month to get a date for him to return but warned me "I don't HAVE to come back you know". The guys are mostly from the North East, not East Yorkshire, and don't want to come back to put jobs right. When they do, they rush to get away again. Doesn't instil any confidence in the quality of their work.
Meanwhile there is also an issue with the conservatory which he refuses to acknowledge so I'm getting evidence to try to get that put right. It's a battle every step of the way, they no doubt hope you'll give up. The DON'T get it right first time and after that it's stress and persistence to get some sort of remedial work. Excuses all the way.
Before I discovered the roof fails, I arranged for Britannia to do some landscaping work. It was meant to be done before the end of 2022 but finally got underway in April 2023 after I notified the owner, Richard Pearson, that I wanted to cancel. Which he wouldn't agree to. There was no pre-planning visit from the landscapers, they didn't even arrive on the day they were meant to, the paving was poorly and unevenly laid, the guys were roaming all over the paving in their rush to get finished and leave so there were over 20 loose slabs and no drainage contingency. Water encroaching on the damp proof course. A team finally came back but I still have some uneven slabs and standing water so the work isn't going to stand the test of time. Disappointed but it took 6 months to get them back - Richard Pearson was too busy taking more money off people and spending it on personal holidays to want to send a team back to make bad work acceptable. I'm not happy with the work now but it's better than it was. The best I can say.
So, to sum up, don't pay a deposit up front, don't be bullied into paying the balance on the completion day (make sure you're happy with the work, inspect it and let it settle in). Don't believe everything you're told, look at Companies House information on them and their contractors, including reading the accounts they've submitted (Britannia haven't submitted any since 2021). Personally I would never use a limited company again, I would not pay a deposit and, after disappointment in both roofing and groundworks, I wouldn't use Britannia Home Improvements again, I don't trust them to do a good job, I wish I'd NEVER met any of them, they resist coming back and I DON'T recommend them. I got caught in their web and now have the aggravation. I urge others to learn from my poor experience and stay well away.
