Perfect place for a family get together

Thank you! We had a couple of nights at Brookside with the whole family. From the minute we arrived it just felt like home. The log burner was wonderful, the games room great fun and the massive table meant we could all sit together. A rare find somewhere big enough for our extended family to meet up. We’ll definitely be back… next time when it’s warm enough to get in the pool.

A great experience with BHHL…

It’s not easy planning a weekend away for 40+ people and the BHHL team made it feel so simple. It felt like they were there to answer any questions around the clock with super quick responses and very helpful information about the process and property. Our stay went so smoothly and was thoroughly enjoyed by all. I would definitely book through them again - thank you!

A great stay at Pencraig

A great stay at Pencraig, for a family get together, from ages 3-78. The house was wonderful and the company efficient to deal with.

We stayed at Brookside to take a break from city and enjoy the beautiful countryside in Ross-on-Wye. The house is wonderfully equipped and suitable for large families. From the extremely comfortable beds to the entertaining games room, this house has it all and lacked nothing. Overall, we had an amazing time at Brookside and definitely recommend it to anyone looking to escape the city and relax.

The perfect venue for gatherings

Holly tree house is the perfect venue for big gatherings. I hosted 20 family members and had the best time. The house is situated right in the valley, seconds away from the river and countless other walking options. There is a canoeing rental place literally a stones throw away. The house itself is set out beautifully with plenty of open communal spaces but also a range of quieter nooks and chill out rooms. The kitchen is very well appointed with everything you need for mass catering and all newly refurbed. The highlight for us was the dual dining area where an indoor room with two huge dining tables opens out to a patio area with another table that easily seats 15, allowing us to mill between the two (perfect for English weather!!).
The bedrooms - LOADS. most are doubles and kings but there are also rooms with single beds for children etc. not all rooms are en suite but those that aren’t have bathrooms next door.
Our host Oli was amazing. I was warmly greeted on arrival with all the info for a happy stay and whenever we had questions during our stay he was quick to help out. We wanted for nothing.

Only one thing to be aware of before you book is that there isn’t a dedicated garden space with grass, only the patio areas. That said, you are surrounded by a plethora of walking and exploring options so you won’t miss out on the natural beauty of the area. Just don’t plan on having a grass space for ball games or whatever.

Highly recommend HTH and would very happily book again. A huge thank you to Oli

Forest House

The first thing to strike you is what a beautiful big old house. The next thing you notice is that it is spotlessly clean. All my guests told me that the rooms were great and the beds big and comfy. All with en suites, perfect. The garden is lovely though close to the main road so there is traffic noise, but it was not off putting as we were a large group ourselves. Add in a hot tub (at no extra charge) and what's not to love. We were celebrating my 70th birthday and I could not have asked for a better venue. Loved the lampshades BTW

Birthday Getaway!

We have just returned from the most wonderful family getaway at this beautiful house. With plenty of space for everyone to spread out and relax, it felt like our own retreat. The break out areas were perfect for gathering in the evenings, the kitchen was fully equipped for big family meals, and the outdoor space sociable from morning coffees to evening chats.

The dining area was huge, spacious and comfortable for us all to sit around!

Everything was spotlessly clean and beautifully maintained, with thoughtful touches of cupcakes for the birthday lady.

The kids had a blast, with some great hiding spots!

perfect base for family get away! Thank you!

Wonderful family stay at Forest House

Forest house was great for our family party of 22 celebrating a 70th Birthday with age range from 2 - 70. Garden, BBQ and hot tub a big hit with all. Having all bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms was a huge bonus. Kitchen is large and very well stocked with utencils. The entire house was spotlessly clean throughout. The pool table and range of games an added bonus. Lots of space to spread out and the dining room is great for eating together comfortably and playing games. All in all a wonderful weekend had by all in a lovely part of the country , highly recommend it for a group stay . Thank you Forest House for being part of our memories and for the delicious welcome cup cakes. I hope we get to come back

What an amazing house!

What an amazing house!! It helped make our family holiday a very special one. The hot tub was broken but after speaking with Ali the owner, he kindly organised another one to be delivered to the property and wow did the children love every minute in it! The house was clean and has so many different living areas so all ages of the family were happy 😃
The surrounding area is just beautiful and we would love to return again.
Thank you for helping make my 40th celebration with my family a lovely experience.

Stayed here for a long weekend with my family

Stayed here for a long weekend with my family. We had the best time! Mike the manager was a wonderful host, very friendly, informative, knowledgable of the area, and knew the house inside out. He gave us a full tour so we knew what’s what when we arrived. The house itself was very impressive, very grand with large rooms and open spaces.

The bedrooms were all good sizes and a couple allowed for families with young children to all stay in. The kitchen was a good size and there was plenty of space to dine both inside and out.

The added facilities of a games room, hot tub and river swimming were great perks as was the huge grounds with plenty of room for kids to run around and play games.

I would highly recommend this house - perfect for a large group.

1 Star – A Very Poorly Maintained Property and Unacceptable Standards of Cleanliness

We stayed at Forest House, Coleford, with a large group and were deeply disappointed by the poor condition of the property and the lack of basic hygiene and upkeep. Given the premium pricing and promising description, the reality fell far short of expectations.

• Cleanliness was appalling. Cobwebs were in every room, remote controls were covered in thick, sticky dust, and the skirting boards were tacky to the touch. The vacuum cleaner gave off a foul smell when used—completely unsuitable for a rental property.

• The kettle was caked with limescale, up to 1cm thick in places. We had to buy descaler and clean it multiple times just to make it safe for preparing baby formula for the three infants in our group.

• The BBQ was unusable—completely rusted and mouldy inside. It was clear it hadn’t been cleaned or maintained from the previous year and had simply been left outside. We ended up buying a new BBQ ourselves, which we left at the property, but BHHL (the managing company) refused to acknowledge the issue.

• Water pressure was non-existent if more than two people tried to shower at the same time. For a former hotel that now accommodates large groups, this is completely unacceptable.

• Kitchenware was in poor condition. Although there were many pots and pans, most needed to be cleaned before use, and several were rusted and unusable.

• Bedding was not clean, and in one bed we even found dead insects inside the sheets. Completely unacceptable.

• When we asked BHHL if they had carried out any inspection before our arrival, it became clear that they hadn’t. Instead, they rely on guests to flag issues, meaning each new group walks into whatever condition the last one left behind.

Overall, Forest House is not being run to a standard that reflects what is promised or paid for. If you’re considering booking this property for a group stay, I’d strongly recommend looking elsewhere until serious improvements are made.

Dirty house- unacceptable experience

The house was dirty, there were bugs on the bed, cobwebs everywhere, the water pressure was an issue- the people staying on the top floor didn’t get any water and when they did it blew hot and cold and a child ended up being scolded on his back. The bbq was as mouldy and we had to buy a brand new one which has now been left at the property. The downstairs bedrooms were cold and we couldn’t heat them up, we had a small baby staying there.

The towels were dirty, the vacuum cleaner was giving off a stench.

When we raised these issues the owner simply said the place was immaculate and he would not be willing to provide any form of compensation for the fact none of us could enjoy our stay.

If you value your health above money avoid!

I had a really disappointing stay at this lodge. The place was unhygienic and dirty throughout, which made the entire experience uncomfortable. Several people in our group actually fell ill afterward, which is completely unacceptable. The vacuum cleaner smelled terrible and seemed like it hadn’t been cleaned in ages. On top of that, the BBQ they provided was horrible/dirty and unusable, so we had to buy our own just to cook properly. Definitely not what I expected, and I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone looking for a clean and safe stay.

Stayed at Monnow Valley Studios with a large group, it was a celebration and we needed somewhere spacious to return after venturing out in the local area.

The house itself was incredible, still one of the nicest I've stayed at for a group of that size, which resulted in us wanting to spend more time there than out and about!

BHHL were easy to book through, responded quickly to any queries and made giving info super simple.

Amazing place

Forest house was the perfect venue for our family weekend celebration for my husband's 60th. 23 of us had a wonderful time, aged 5-80 years. The house is beautiful and spacious with a great pool table and hot tub with loads of places to sit and chill and a well equipped kitchen. The large dining room is great and lovely to all be able to eat all together and play games. All rooms having ensuites is such a bonus and everything immaculate and clean. Thank you so much! Would love to come again as a great area to explore.
