Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 43 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Consumers frequently complained about poor customer support, mentioning unhelpful representatives, long wait times, and persistent difficulties resolving basic account issues. Many individuals also experienced frustrating payment problems, unexpected account closures, and complicated loan processes that completely lacked proper communication and transparency from the financial institution. The minority of people were satisfied with the professional loan officers and helpful support staff assisting them through the home buying process. Some reviewers also noted competitive interest rates on certificates of deposit and appreciated having access to specific banking accounts without dealing with excessive monthly fees.

Bad experience with their loan…

Bad experience with their loan officers. The few times I have called to try to work things out I get talked down to and told multiple different things depending on who I speak with. Really tired of hoping I'd get someone to truly help me and tell me all rather than call several times to get a full picture or all the options that available to me. Not very friendly or helpful and they give serious attitude, get a different job bud if you're tired of dealing with people on the phone.

Alliant oks fraudulent charge though they have $0 fraud liability guarantee!!

Alliant reported an unauthorized fraudulent transaction on my visa credit card. They sent me a new card, but never credited the fraudulent charge back to my account. Even after calling them 5 times they just obfuscated the situation. BTW they have a "$0 fraud liability guarantee" with Visa. Seven months later this same phony company got hold of my new credit card. This time Alliant let it go through. I caught it, now they are hassling me about this charge. This is when I found out they never credited the previous fraudulent charge.

Mismanagement & Mishandling of Consumer Funds

I opened this savings account as a condition to a loan I received. I kept the account open after the loan was paid just to have an extra savings spot. I attempted to transfer to my external account on Monday and was prevented due to a limit that was now placed on my account that it never had before.
I was given the run around and lied to numerous times about withdrawing my money from branches until I just decided to just close the account.
I requested that a cashiers check be sent to me overnight via FedEx. Today is Thursday and I still don’t have my funds. Upon calling for a status update I was just told that they made “Another Mistake” by sending my cashiers check via regular mail with no way to track it because they don’t get receipt's from the postal service, and let me clarify that we’re talking about over $10K which would normally require some sort of mail insurance, yet they charged me $22 TWICE for the FedEx service on Monday and the only solution given is to prolong the situation further by stop payments, form request, and reassurance of the checks. How does that benefit me or make me feel better when my bills are due?
I’d run far away from this institution because I couldn’t even find them on the NCUA research site yet they claim they are governed by the entity!! I believe this is a scam.

Several administrative issues

Several administrative issues. It took over a year to correct their error in not submitting funds into a CD account as requested. I made several phone calls and finally talked to a supervisor and stated I needed to file a complaint with the state. The second issue was that I always get a quarterly paper statement and all of a sudden I didn’t get one. I asked to get one (I do pay for this service). Then, the next quarter, I didn’t get one again. They stated that I asked for e-statements only. I’ve been banking with them for several years and that is not the case —I did not request e-statements. The third issue is I never received my paper tax form from them as is legally required. I called twice and I still didn’t get it. I’m sorry I put some money in a CD again; I will be closing my accounts there once my terms are up.

Miserable mortgage experience

Getting my mortgage transferred to Alliant has been a miserable experience. I was not provided with a member number to log in, and they are unwilling to provide one. Attempting to call in results in 45 minutes of transfers between completely untrained phone staff and zero resolutions. If anything goes wrong with my regular payments, or I need to change payment information or just obtain basic loan information, I am completely unable to do so and unable to fix the problem. Avoid this company at all costs if you are fortunate enough to be able to do so.

Giving up opening a trust account

I am a current member but after four attempts to also open a Trust Account, I am giving up and will be closing all my accounts at Alliant. I came for the excellent rates and due to Suze Orman's recommendation. I had put about $40K in a savings account plus a couple of CDs.

But I redid my trust and realized I should have opened the account in the name of the trust. Unlike many mainstream banks and financial services companies they refuse to rename an account, so I decided to open a trust account and just move the money into it as the CDs came due. I now have sent the application and all the documents multiple times, and every time I get nonsensical emails saying they could not process the application for different reasons like "the trust's date of birth does not match the date on the documents" (the trust has a creation date, I have a date of birth and both are correct and clearly shown in the documents I sent) and then "you must send trust-related documents with a "wet" signature, signed by hand with a pen. You may digitally attach that to this message." OK, how do I digitally send "wet" sig?

I have sent notarized documents every time, and I just got a note back saying next time I need to send notarized documents.

I have tried calling; they say they will call me back and don't. I have tried their chat line. The chat person repeats what is in the email and then tells me Alliant immediately deletes any and all documents sent if they can't process the application, so you can't talk to anyone who is looking at what you sent. So you have to start all over again, fill out a new application--anything unclear they send an email saying it can't be processed and delete everything,

It's not that I don't appreciate the need to be careful with trusts, etc, but what is odd to me is that institutions often make it challenging to WITHDRAW funds; I made clear I want to keep what I have there and add more funds to a trust account.

I sent one application with all paper documents and a cover note that said: Please, before you say you can't process this and throw all this away, call me and so I we can discuss exactly what I need to do because the emails have been very confusing. They ignored that.

They obviously don't want my money, so I guess I better just surrender.

Shady company that messes with your credit score and wastes time

I applied for a personal loan through Upstart, who I guess uses Alliant Credit Union for the funding. After taking all these steps to verify myself they ended up denying me saying I had too many open accounts with a balance/they could not verify my information..... WELL WHY DO DID YOU OFFER ME THE LOAN TO CONSOLIDATE THEM then??????? WHY select me and send ME the prequalification letter???? Their rejection letter was hard to understand and all they could say was to reapply in 30 days.... absolutely no thank you. I will go to a reputable bank after this experience. NOW they have my personal information from the application process which sucks. Ill be waiting for more scams from them, and now feel like I need to change my bank login info because for some reason they made me log into my account before approving me. HUGE RED FLAG!

Great rates, but...

I follow Suze Orman’s podcast and decided to open an Alliant Credit Union account based on her heavy promotion of the products. However, I did wait on doing so for the current promotion because of the negative customer service reviews I’d read. I bit the bullet and started the process December 22, 2023.

The first CD ‘application’ went off without a hitch; money transferred in from an external instantly. When I tried to open a second CD account and fund savings, the system told me I had to conduct an external account verification – even though they had already transferred in from the very same account minutes before without such ‘verification’. Okay, I get it. There was time in the ‘1-2 business day’ time frame for all to take place.

Well, now we’re getting into the holiday weekend so nothing is going to happen until Tuesday, December 26, 2023. Still good. HOWEVER, come December 26th my money is on a “General Hold” even though Alliant has marked the money “received” and my external account has been debited! It is now January 2, 2024 and my money is still on ‘hold’, even though it obviously cleared on 12/28/2023 according to my Alliant account details. I messaged about this contradiction but have not received a satisfactory response. This has been the gist of many of the reviews I’ve read – that Alliant holds members’ money for inordinate periods of time. I have yet to get a straight answer to my inquiry.

My money was finally made ‘available’ on January 3, 2024 so I could open a second certificate and schedule funding of a savings account because I want the ROI. When these instruments mature, I do not intend to stay with Alliant.

Conclusion: In an article published on July 12, 2023 by bankrate.com, Alliant is the 7th largest credit union in the US based on 800K members and assets of $19B. Alliant gets high ratings by institutions for their products and rates/dividends, however customers tell a different story according to a number of review websites. As of right now I am inclined to agree with reviews – great rates, poor customer service. Ultimately, it’s how people are treated that creates loyalty to any institution. High rates do not last; relationships do. Recommended if all one wants is high return. If one is looking for service or a warm fuzzy feeling, not recommended.

Name change experience

If you need to change your legal name, don’t. They make the process so difficult and with so much bureaucracy you will wonder if you’re really dealing with a financial institution or technically inept business. First you can’t change your name yourself, standard. It’s not apparent how to change your name and when you call you get some snotty likely underpaid CSR who directs you to complete a docusign form and attach your legal documentation, again standard. Where Alliant fails is apparently they cannot enlarge the document or actually click into the attachment. And they then proceed to email you a lot saying your docs are too small and to keep resubmitting. Get your $&@* together with your technology, you’re not even a big financial powerhouse. Sincerely someone who is very irritated and frustrated with your garbage customer service, I shouldn’t have to complete a docusign multiple times nor submit my drivers license and marriage license multiple times. NO OTHER FINANCIAL INSTITUTION has been this difficult.

Find a different Financial Institution!

Find a different Financial Institution!

I would not recommend doing any banking with Alliant. Just getting a Debit card took 3 times to get a debit card for my Savings account sent to my house. It took 28 days which is normally a 4 day process. They have no walk in centers. Everything is done via app or debit card.

One day someone else’s paycheck was deposited in my account!

The list is long on what they have messed up in.

Total scam, No go

Log in process was terrible, customer support was very slow and annoying. I transferred 25 and it only shows 10 with caption saying balance is 15. Total scam.

I singed up simply because of bonus on swagbucks, but if you are not here for that, DO NOT sign up.

video recording of yourself.
Holding your ID close to your face and state your full name, your date of birth, and tell them why i
you're tataking out a loan, and that you understand that you're responsible for paying it back in full. Ensure that the sound and lighting are appropriate. I think this is so ridiculous. Well I took my business to another institution and I'm all set.

Terrible mortgage lender/servicer!

Terrible mortgage lender/servicer! They have made countless errors (mis-applying escrow funds, forgetting to apply an extra principal payment) and it is impossible to get any help via customer service. Many emails - many phone calls, and I STILL am unable to speak to a person who understands the situation and will work with me to fix it. They keep ping-ponging me to different people. Additionally I have had two people be blatantly rude ("You just don't understand! I do this every day. etc.) when I am trying to get them to acknowledge and fix an error. AVOID AVOID AVOID. If you have any problems, they will not work with you to get them fixed.

Beware of this bank!

This is one of the worst credit unions ever! Transfers to and from an external bank takes almost a week! After that, there's a so-called "general hold" before your funds are available. To make things worse, there are all types of fees involved. Also, I never signed up for a Savings account but yet this bank opened a Savings account on my behalf without my consent! Then they charged all kinds of fees for an account that I never opened! Will not recommend such a credit union for banking purposes!

Savings and CD.

Tried to open up a savings account and CD. . Twice try to transfer money into the account and it kept kicking it out saying no account found. So there was never any money put into it. I called a couple of times was not happy with the customer service . So I called to close the account completely and a girl who sounded like she was half asleep told me I haven’t had it open for 90 days and I would be charged a $10 fee to close it. So I told her I’ll call back in 90 days.. wanted to tell her she could go back to sleep now.
