Purchased a car from Walters in…

Purchased a car from Walters in September, they carried out the preparation works and minor repairs as agreed and I am very happy with the car. The warranty for a year was a little expensive to include the cover for the roof, but now have peace of mind for 12 months, so no complaints.
The slight negatives were the preparation time, of some 3 weeks from deposit to collection, and the delay in Walters registering the car, took 3 weeks to receive the V5.
Apparently Walters register the cars in batches, around 2 weeks following collection, not a major issue just prevents private number plates being assigned and fitted.

I recently purchased 24/9/24 a Mini Cooper SD from Walters Motor Group, and the entire experience was fantastic! Debbie, in particular, was incredibly friendly, helpful, and never pushy, which made the whole process stress-free. She kept me updated at every stage, ensuring I knew exactly when the car would be ready to drive away. The team’s professionalism and genuine care really stood out. I highly recommend Walters Motor Group for their excellent service!

Outstanding customer service

Recently purchased a replacement car from Walters Motor group, have to say the service I received from Jay the sales guy from start to finishing was excellent, firstly I liked the idea of having to make appointment to view the car it’s was ready for me to view when I arrived in a dry garaged area so easy to inspect the car regardless of how the weather was ,able to take for decent test drive, then being able to sit down in a comfortable environment to make a deal, took the opportunity to take the 3 year warranty and Diamond Bright treatment, when it’s was time to collect the car it’s spotlessly clean inside & out really pleased with my purchase a big thank you to Jay and all his colleagues at Walters motors group.

FANTASTIC Customer Service

Damon has been my main point of contact when purchasing my vehicle at Walters Motor Group. From the outset, he was very clear and knowledgeable in matters of car financing. After re-assuring me about the whole process, I am pleased to have purchased by vehicle, which has just been delivered today. A great deal was agreed, which included a 3 year warranty deal and Diamond Brite Coating which was applied by Walters Motor Group to the vehicle. The vehicle was delivered to me some 3 hours away, and I was kept fully updated all the way. The online e-sign paperwork was made very easy and Damon kept me regularly updated throughout. I am so impressed that I plan to buy all future vehicles from Walters Motor Group. Thank you again for such an amazing experience!

Looking for a good Discovery 4

Looking for a good Discovery 4, I did the usual searches on the internet for offers within 75 miles. Found a number, each had a few random photos and a brief description. Found WMC, very impressed with their web site, and the overall perception of the company. I was very impressed with the trouble taken to give a quality set of photo of the vehicle, followed by an impressive video, complete with running commentary on the points to note, even the odd blemish. This was followed by a 360 degree internal photo. I contacted Andy, and within a couple of days I was at WMC to view and test drive the vehicle. Andy had all the documents for the vehicle, searches done etc. So, quite happily the deal was done and I had a nice Discovery 4 to drive home in. A small problem occurred, but was fixed. Very happy with the reception and whole experience of buying the vehicle. I would definitely endorse WMC as being a company worth considering when looking for your next purchase.

Never Again

Where do i start ?
I purchased a Ford Focus in August 2023. I was asked if would like to purchase the extended warranty and I am really glad that I did. I have certainly got value for money from it.
In September on the hottest day of the year (32 degrees) the air con packed up. I rang and was told they would take care of it but I would have to wait 6 weeks which on reflection is a long time to wait for a air con recharge. On the arranged date I went to drive the car to them and discovered that the clutch pedal was pressed into the floor and refused to move meaning I couldn't drive the car. On ringing aftersales I was told that they would look at it but not until January 2024 (several months later). Was I expected to walk everywhere or get taxis. After voicing my displeasure with their lack of aftercare I was told that I could contact the warranty company and arrange to have the car towed to another garage or wait months for Walter Cars to deal with it and even then I would have to arrange the recovery truck myself. If you have such a long waiting time for repairs possibly taking on more staff would alleviate the issues rather than keeping your staffing costs down and providing poor customer service. Happy customers are returning customers.
Whilst I was talking to the warranty company Walter Cars tried to ring me and then sent me a text message saying that they suddenly could look at it that day. At this stage they had lost my trust and I did not want to communicate with them. I took my car to a local garage who could not have been more helpful.
Moving on 2 weeks later the car wouldn't start and I had to ask a neighbour for a lift to a local garage where I had to purchase a new battery ( again thankfully covered by the warranty)
Today 3/2/24 I was at my local supermarket and when I went to start the car it was completely dead. Once again I had to contact the warranty company and arrange to have it towed away.
The car seems to spend more time on the back of a tow truck than it does on the road.
I fully appreciate that when you buy an older car ( 2017 plate with 74,000 miles on the clock) you can have issues but this particular car has been a total nightmare and has caused me stress and inconvenience having to rely on others for lifts etc.
I have never experienced a car dealer who does not provide efficient aftercare and expects their customers to deal with everything themselves. The make, model and mileage or value of the car of does not matter, what matters is good customer care and ensuring that the customer is happy and enjoying their experience.
On reflection I wish I had never purchased this car and if I had been made fully aware of the warranty process and the lengthy wait time for repairs I would have gone to another dealer.
If you do decide to purchase a car from here please discuss the aftercare waiting times and definitely take out the extended warranty but be prepared to deal with everything yourself.

UDATE TO REPSONSE FROM WALTER AUTO GROUP

Its now Wednesday 14/2 and I have not received the call from you on Monday 5/2 as stated in your response.
Obviously at this stage I do not want to communicate with you any further and would like you to respect my decision. I am totally frustrated with the situation and now have a car sitting on my driveway which will not start and I am relying on other people to give me lifts to work etc. This has caused me stress and I now have to start looking for a replacement car as I cannot rely on this one and even when it does get repaired I will always be waiting for the next breakdown to happen which I have to spend time arranging to be resolved. I could have brought a car privately and would appreciate that if something went wrong I was responsible, rather I went to a dealer with a workshop where I would have assumed any necessary repairs would be carried out in a timely manner. I understand that every industry sector struggles to find staff but that is not something i need to know about and would not expect it to effect me as a customer of yours. You may be waiting months to get your car repaired but you are fortunate in that you can access other vehicles and therefore not have your daily routines affected, this is not so in my case.
I should not have to threaten to put a poor review on line but obviously as you contacted me shortly after my 'rant' it touched a nerve with yourselves. As a customer I do not need to hear justification's to my review and again please do not contact me as I have no desire to hear from you.

Reply from Walters Motor Group

Morning Adrian, I'm sorry to read your review, but I will thank you for at least being constructive in your criticism rather than ranting. I will be more than happy to call you to discuss your comments but in the meantime I will try and explain events from our side to give you a bit of perspective.

Firstly the 4-6 week wait. When a customer raises an issue with us, we have to look at the nature of the issue and then work out where we can fit it into our workshop. Serious issues that affect the usability of the vehicle such as engine and gearbox issues are prioritised as urgent and we will fast track these ASAP, less severe issues such as air con or other auxilliary issues that don't directly affect the cars running are booked in according to current workshop availability at the next available date. Like most successful garages we are booked up many weeks in advance with both outside work and our own work and it has to be carefully managed to try and keep everyone on board and happy. Its not an ideal situation, nor is it one we want and we have been and still are seeking additional technicians to join our team, but there is a big shortage of technicans in the labour market and this has been the case for over 2 years now. Believe me though we have been trying super hard to expand our workforce to deal with the problem but it's not as simple as it may seem to an outsider. Just employ some more people you say, if only it were that easy, id be delighted to.

So, as for your case you called mid September to have your air con looked at and the earliest availability we had for a non urgent issue was October 30th. I would point out that you also had the opportunity to use a garage of your own choice at any time as your warranty is valid at any VAT registered garage, however if you want to use us which you are welcome to do, we have to treat you as we would treat anyone else. Everyone else has waited patiently so I dont think its unreasonable for you to do the same. I appreciate its frustrating, but for perspective, I currently have my own Land Rover booked in at Inchcape Norwich for a non-urgent issue and im in a 3 month queue, finally going in later this month after reporting it in November. This is a main dealer, with vast amounts of money and man power and we are still booking in half the time they are. My point is, its not just us, everyone is struggling with the situation and as much as we want an instant fix, there just isnt one when the man power isnt available.

So on the day of your booking you contacted us to say your clutch had gone to the floor and you couldn't now get in. Now I wasnt directly involved at this point but I understand from the notes on our system that Debbie said if you can get the car to us we will try and fit it in between appointments as next availability is 4-6 weeks again. Now I agree at this point this shouldn't have been her response and she should have identified this as an ugent issue that needed immediate attention, however your version of "voicing your displeasure" was in fact a verbal rant, and threats of leaving an expletive review online of us. I dont think thats particulary kind or the way to go about getting help however Debbie did ask management if we can help and this is where I became involved, and I asked her to call you back, and let you know we will come out and collect the car, get it in that day and use your air con slot to look at your clutch issue instead and deal with the aircon at the end. However, as you rightly point out in your review, you ignored our return calls and text message where we were trying to assist you. I appreciate you were probably frustrated, however we were trying to rectify the situation, you just never gave us the courtesy of that opportunity. I'm sorry that you have had another battery issue and I would offer my assistance now to help you again regardless of the past and will call you personally Monday to discuss. Regards Adam Walters

Wanted to buy car Ford focus

Wanted to buy car Ford focus. Rung up and was told car was out on loan so I waited two weeks. They finally get car back. But then say if I want car I have to give them five hundred pound which I said no. They then ring me back all nice and say it’s ok we see you Saturday. Then to day ring me tell me cars been sold. No nice people at all ifs that’s our they look after there customers. As reply to your reply. I did other. To pay 99 pound but you said that only hold it for 24 hours. If wast interest in this car I wouldn’t off wait two weeks. And after waiting two weeks you couldn’t give me a day. But now after reading some other reviews I am glad I am not a customer off yours. To other customers if you see a nice car on there web. See if you get it else where before buying from these

Dear Martin, with respect, you were sent a detailed sales video of the vehicle and informed that there were a number of people interested in the car, we were totally transparent with you. We gave you the opportunity to purchase the vehicle as soon as it arrived back on site with us and before anyone else as promised and you refused saying you were not interested in buying a car like that which we of course respect, remote buying is not for everyone.

However, we are a business, and if someone else says they want it after you have turned down that opportunity, then the car remains available to the first person who makes a financial commitment to buy it, we can't control this. It does not make us "not nice people" if someone else choses to buy a car after you chose not to. Its obviously disappointing when you miss out on a car you want, however tarnishing a companies image because you were not prepared to commit and someone else was is your own choice and you cannot hold a business accountable for your own aprehension and your decison not to buy. Having agreed a future appointment is not the same as reserving a car, the car was on sale to all, and this is why we rang you out of courtesy to inform you the car was no longer available.

The number of people who say they are coming in and never do makes keeping cars off sale on hope value unviable, hence why we make it clear to everyone that without a financial commitment, vehicles must remain on sale to be fair to everybody. We will always inform you as we did today if a car is reserved in the meantime.

It is correct that a £99 reservation would hold the vehicle for 24 hours but this wouldn't have worked for you as you couldn't get in until the weekend, we cannot control if or when other customers may choose to reserve online or not. All of our cars are on sale online and can be reserved at any time 24 hours a day, this is the modern world of online selling. This is unfortunately the risk you take by being non-committal and unfortunately for you on this occasion it did not work out for you. There's nothing malicious here, and we are sorry you feel the way you do, but you have to look at it from our side as well.

I do sympathise with the situation and its never nice, but you do have to appreciate what we can and can't control, we do not know when someone will buy a car online and take it out of the marketplace for others. We still wish you luck in your search for a new car, but on this occasion it won't be with us.

Kind regards, Walters Motor Group

Fantastic customer service

I brought a Mini Cooper S a couple of months ago now and have received very good customer service from Walters Motor Group. There have been a couple of issues with the car but on both occasions Walters have contacted me immediately and gone out of their way to resolve the problems. Adam was incredibly helpful with sorting out an issue with the brakes and took time to explain and help fix the problem. Would recommend and thank you for your transparent and helpful service.

Professional and transparent

Quality cars at fair prices - hard to find anywhere else. Really impressed with the process and professionalism - even sent a video pointing out every little scratch. We had a minor concern about squeaky suspensions on our test drive but were reassured that this will be checked. Now just a short wait whilst the car is MOT'd and serviced. I will be updating my review as it goes. Looking forward to it!

UPDATE 24/07/23: picked up the car and no problems on a 200mi journey home. Ran smoothly. Interior looked as if it were brand new.

UPDATE 05/09/23: took the car on holiday and still using for daily commute. Running perfectly.

UPDATE 23/07/25: mechanic recently found that rear crash beam was bent and car was repaired except for this part, no reports of a crash before and haven't been in one so likely a parking accident from previous owner. Very hard to spot but should have been!

Bought a van from them back in…

Bought a van from them back in December, apparently their so called master technician done every job that needed doing . It came with a new mot ? Had nothing but things not work properly. One being could never get the washers to work . Finely get a mechanic to look
Behind all the panels in the inner wing & there is not even a washer in place . So unless I have had someone take my van to pieces and put back together again there never was one there . So how did it pass a MOT . Don’t buy from them without getting a full inspection buy a independent mechanic first . I have reported the mot situation to the relivent authorities

Hi Danny, you never once contacted us to discuss this and inform us of any issues on your van, and posted this 7 months after purchase. I find it very hard to believe what you have written, partly because I actually drove that van myself for a month or so and never experienced any issue at all with the washers. Furthermore, not that you would have known, but we fitted a brand new clutch and flywheel in your van prior to purchase, and at great expense, because we weren't happy with it. So why would we spend nearly £800 doing that and not ensure your washers worked (which did or it wouldn't have passed its MOT).

Finally, when we called you on a number of occasions to discuss your review and lack of contact you just refused to answer and ignored our calls. Theres very little we can do to help if we are unaware and you refuse to engage with us.

Kind regards WMG.

Purchased a golf gti from these guys. It’s definitely going down on my great decisions list.
Couldn’t be happier from the first phone call to the last email.
Even though I purchased on internet and never met any of these people. I never felt out of touch with them.
And even though the sale is done and I’m extremely happy with my car. I still feel as though, if I called with anything. They would still be as enthusiastic to help now, just as much as they were from the first phone call.
I have to say thank you to Jay first. Very professional and obviously an asset to Walters motor group.

Got a lovely Honda Civic from them. Good communications and a smooth purchase. I had to wait a few days to get the car, but I was not in a hurry. The wait was stated to have been for quality checks and valeting, I didn't see any reason why this was not the case. I don't know if that is the norm for them. Not pushy on upselling.

WMG Sell Dangerous Cars

Poor vehicle knowledge, insufficient checks, and hidden admin fees. This place (knowingly or negligently) sells dangerous vehicles.

I enquired regarding a BMW 520d (LL12 JVF) that this dealership were selling, and discussed the vehicle over the phone with Ross. Disappointingly he was very vague with detail when asked very simple and direct questions (i.e. "please talk me through the vehicle's service history"). He advised me it was 'good' (despite being advertised as 'excellent') and only divulged more detail when pressed. The history was certainly not 'excellent', with some gaps and a large amount of work not having been undertaken by a main dealer.

This particular model of BMW benefits from the iDrive system, which dictates service schedules and provides countdowns for when certain parts (fluids, brake pads/discs, etc.,) will require changing. There is NO fixed service schedule. When I asked Ross to check the system for me he advised me that this particular model doesn't have such levels of detail. It does. I'll be charitable and accept that he might not have sufficient knowledge of the vehicle to interrogate the system properly, but others may think that he was trying to pull a fast one.

Having arranged to view and test drive the vehicle (trying to get Ross to agree that I'd be allowed to test drive the vehicle before we discussed the financial side of things was an ordeal in itself) I carried out some further research into the vehicle. This was when I discovered that the vehicle has at least one (the government website doesn't disclose specifics) safety recall outstanding.

Now WMG make a big deal of the fact that all of their vehicles are checked and approved. Indeed, this forms part of their justification for adding on a £99 'arrangement fee' on purchases. (N.B. this was NOT disclosed in their advertisement for the vehicle on motors.co.uk) This tells me either that they are not as thorough in their checks as they claim to be, or that they were aware of the recall but decided not to do anything about it, and not to bring it to the attention of prospective purchasers.

The 'arrangement fee' is another thing entirely. I do not expect to be told that a product is available at a certain price, and then have the price increased when I come to pay for it. I note that the proprietor has defended the charge in another review but, frankly, none of these are things for which I should expect to pay a dealer. Dealership prices are already inflated compared to private sales, as they take into account checks, servicing, warranties etc., I have my own breakdown cover, I am perfectly capable of purchasing my own fuel, I have no need for finance and, frankly, if a vehicle had not been recently serviced or MOT-ed, then I would not be considering it as a purchase in the first place. Similarly, it is a basic expectation that a car is clean when it is being sold; I do not expect to have to pay for the privilege of purchasing a non-dirty car.

No doubt WMG will already have reflected the cost to them of selling the vehicle when they purchased it, either at auction or as a part-exchange. This is just shameless profiteering by double-charging for things that should be included and/or carried out as a matter of course.

Thankfully some other poor soul placed a deposit on the vehicle online before I came to inspect it (what kind of fool orders a vehicle from sharks like this without so much as a physical inspection?), so at least Ross was spared the ignominy of being challenged face-to-face regarding these matters.

Finally, to pre-empt the sadly-predictable response that I'm likely to get from the proprietor, this isn't a case of sour grapes whatsoever. I had done my due diligence on the vehicle and was prepared to negotiate upon price in order to reflect these glaring inadequacies in the vehicle. Everything has its price (even a broken and dangerous vehicle), but I would have been more than willing to walk away.

I only hope that the new purchaser has done their due diligence, as it seems WMG certainly haven't.

Reply from Walters Motor Group

James, may I take the opportunity to defend our good name against your allegations. Firstly, to those reading, we have never sold you a vehicle, nor have you ever stepped foot in our premises, seen any of our vehicles or met any of us in person. You merely enquired on one of our cars that subsequently sold while you were considering it. When we rang you to personally discuss this review you have left us, and allay any concerns you may have with our company, you kindly put the phone down on us. I think that anyone reading this will start to get the gist of where we are going here...

So I will reply directly to you on here instead. I find the allegations you make to be extremely serious, and as owner of the business I take them very personally, as do my team here at WMG so its only right I take the time to reassure the viewing public. Firstly we do not sell "dangerous vehicles", this is a complete lie, and quite frankly just slanderous. The car you initially enquired about had a BMW recall in place for an exhaust gas recirculation motor modification. We spoke to BMW as part of our checks whilst preparing the car for the person who has actually bought it, who have confirmed the car is perfectly safe to drive and the recall can be carried out at any time, and to book it in at our or the new owners convenience. Your allegations are entirely false and defamatory and without any substance whatsoever. Had you taken as much time and diligence to ring BMW as you have compiling your review, you would have found this.

Secondly, we have vast knowledge of the motor industry, our sales team take great efforts to answer any enquiries in detail, and I've actually taken the time to read and listen to your conversations with Ross where its abundantly clear he was looking into the exact service history as per your request until somebody bought the car from under you one evening via our online purchasing portal. Ross notified you of this immediately the next morning so you were kept fully aware that the car was no longer available.

Yes we have a £99 arrangement fee on all of our retail sales vehicles, this is very clearly displayed on our website, and on many of the 3rd party companies we use to advertise on, such as Autotrader, and our website (and Autotrader) gives you very clear information as to what benefits you get for this fee. There is nothing hidden whatsoever, its all very transparent. If you had any concerns about this, our sales team would have gladly talked you through it to reassure you of what it means and the level of preparation this allows us to provide our wonderful customers.

Which takes us nicely onto your final point, the checks and level of preparation we do. When a car sells, this is the time that the pre handover checks are carried out. This includes servicing, MOT, final
paperwork checks, recall checks, a full pre-delivery inspection, vehicle detailing and fuelling the vehicle, so come handover, our customers have a "freshly" prepared vehicle, not one that's now out of date. There is no point in doing checks such as manufacturer recalls (which are free to rectify anyway by the manufacturer) weeks or months earlier as things can change in the period between the cars arrival and its eventual sale, new recalls could be issued by a manufacturer for example, we would much rather do them all in one go, and with up to 150 vehicles in stock at any one time, it makes it much easier to manage for us as well. So please rest assured, our cars are thoroughly examined, thoroughly checked, and extremely well prepared, and yes the new owner will be delighted with his new car.

As for your review, I don't think there's much else I need to say, I think anyone reading this will make their own judgement of our company, by reading the hundreds of glowing reviews which our fantastic customers who actually purchased a car, and have experience of what they are talking about, have written.

Kind regards

All of us at WMG
