Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me a dozen or more times....
This poor rating is NOT because of how customers of Russia based Kaspersky woke up one morning to find a new program installed without their knowledge or permission. This poor review is based upon how Ultra Antivirus responded to my request for support.
Like many others, I was forced to "upgrade" to Windows 11. (Oh how I wish I just migrated to Linux. Sigh.) By the beginning of December, my computer was shutting down unexpectedly - like as I was working.
After an embarrassing amount "troubleshooting", I took off my stupid hat and clicked on "Scan History" in Ultra AV. Nothing. Nada. Not a single successful scan.
So then I head to the Event Viewer. There it is. The answer I was looking for:
Faulting application name: UltraSvc.exe, version: 2.12.1.1437, time stamp: 0xbd48e254
Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 10.0.26100.7462, time stamp: 0xe9f9d656
Exception code: 0xe0434352
Fault offset: 0x00000000000c782a
Faulting process id: 0x3050
Faulting application start time: 0x1DC7F29C44DC875
Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\UltraVPN\2.12.1\UltraSvc.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\System32\KERNELBASE.dll
Report Id: 63de1325-b31b-49a8-812b-324d290e25a8
There are dozens of these reports generated after each and every scan I've tried to run.
So, I open a support ticket. I tell them that I haven't had a single successful scan since installing it on my computer. I also included the Windows Event Viewer logs.
Their response:
"I understand your concern about the system shutting down after every scan, and I'm here to assist you.
UltraAV on your device has an optional feature that allows your computer to automatically shut down after a scan is completed. This only occurs if the 'Shutdown PC after scan' option is enabled."
I should have run screaming like my hair was on fire when I woke up and found this bugger installed on my PC. I didn't have any problems running this on Windows 10. However, Windows 11 has been another story.
I am migrating to a new antivirus solution. We'll see then what evils Ultra AV allowed through.
Save yourself time, money and heart ache. Avoid this software.
