Greenwashing at its most cynical
Texfelt's website claims it's recycled products are all eco this and chemical free that. This is not my experience. The recycled plastic underlay I got from them stank, made my eyes run, and made me feel ill. So much for 'zero VOCs' and the like. It was the opinion of numerous industry experts who I had visit that the underlay was made from recycled plastics that had previously been used to contain toxic chemicals and that these were now leaching into my home making me ill. I contacted Texfelt but they didn't want to know. I ended up having both the underlay and the carpet it was stuck to ripped out, and was £700 the poorer for it. I subsequently repurchased exactly the same carpet but used 100% wool from the carpet supplier as underlay, rather than Texfelt's recycled plastic stuff, and have had no problems at all.
In May 2023 The Guardian ran an article "Recycled plastic can be more toxic and is no fix for pollution, Greenpeace warns". It's worth a read. The key paragraph: "Recycled plastics, the report says, often contain higher levels of chemicals such as toxic flame retardants, benzene and other carcinogens, environmental pollutants including brominated and chlorinated dioxins, and numerous endocrine disruptors that can cause changes to the body’s natural hormone levels.".
That was my experience. Avoid.
