THE TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE OUT WEIGHS THE FREE BANKING STAY AWAY!

Stay away! I’ve banked with Tangerine for years. It used to be ING DIRECT. When it switched to Tangerine my debit card always seemed to have issues and stop working. I’ve had to order multiple cards because of this. And they make you wait for it to come regular snail mail … meanwhile no access to money. Even though I’ve been a client for many years I’ve never been able to get more than $250 overdraft. Customer service is horrible. Three days ago I noticed a transaction in my account for an online purchase that I did not make. They advertise 24 hour customer service. After 1.5 hours on hold (9:00pm to 10:30pm) to get a representative I hung up … Next night I called again, waited 1 hour 20 minutes , hung up waiting. Today I noticed I have no access to my account. Called on my lunch break at work. Was told they froze my account, didn’t seem to care about unauthorized transactions… transferred me to their security dept. I was told my account frozen because a $56 deposit was being made to my account by the CRA but not in my name. I explained my spouse has it setup that way … he’s done this for YEARS. Then I was told we need a joint account. I told him Tangerine refused to add him because they didn’t accept his ID. Rep hung up on me. I called back, got transferred to the security dept again. Was told they won’t look into the unauthorized transactions on my account until I get a joint account. I told them to keep the $56 from the CRA just give me access to my account. Then I was told because Tangerine screwed up and gave access to the CRA to do previous deposits they would have to hold ALL of those deposits and my crappy $250 overdraft doesn’t cover that. So now I’m shopping around for a new bank so I can setup all my pre authorized payments somewhere else before they go NSF because my account is frozen … and who know if I’ll ever get my $ back unless I can afford a lawyer to sue them.

Totally subpar bank

Totally subpar bank. I tried their ETFs for 2 years, terrible results. Their website doesn't work alot. I only keep a Tangerine account and credit card so I can use that credit card online rather than my usual one with a higher limit.
They send a lot of spammy emails offering great deals in big print, but read the fine print. The "deals " suck.

Criminal Incompetence

You can have thousands in your account, yet live in constant fear of losing access to your account. With Tangerine this can happen any time, and happens regularly. Today, I'm locked out of my account, because their stupid security code they send me on my phone DOESN'T MATCH!!!! Password entered correctly, but the pin they sent me by phone is incorrect as it is given.
Luckily I had a phone app and logged in. Another system change - today they made me select/choose a new password instead of a PIN, which was in use up to today. OK, a sign of relief. I went to their website and while entering a special character in this password I accidentally closed my window, I pressed a function key instead Shift I think. I went back, entered it correctly, and got 'account locked due to too many incorrect attempts'. Now I'm locked out for real. Btw, there were ZERO incorrect attempts with a password, just one closed page with the password partially entered, and a page closed (without a 'wrong password' message). And earlier, a correctly entered password and a wrong Numeric Code, typed exactly as they gave me over the phone. Can somebody PLEASE investigate this bank, they need supervision for all the errors they are introducing daily!!! This is criminal incompetence.

If I could give them zero stars

If I could give them zero stars, I would they are the worst bank to deal with. I’ve had multiple issues from being scammed and not being able to get my money back to using my bank card at a store, It’s saying declined but money still comes out of my account. They do not care about their customers.

Good experiences with Tangerine in Madeira

We had also booked a rental car for a vacation in Madeira through lastminute.com. Since the lastminute.com hotline is very poor, I contacted Tangerine in Funchal, Madeira, by email before the trip. I received a reply on the same day.
After arriving, we took a shuttle bus (a fairly modern and clean electric van) to Tangerine, which is about 5 minutes away.
The handover went smoothly, and the staff were friendly and helpful.
As we did not trust the insurance cover provided by lastminute.com (unfortunately, we only found out about the poor lastminute hotline afterwards), we asked for and received comprehensive insurance cover from Tangerine.
The vehicle was a Seat Arona, which cheerfully took us up and down the mountains in Madeira.
Returning the car was also hassle-free, and the shuttle bus arrived after 10 minutes. In the meantime, our rental car was already being cleaned for the next customer in Tangerine's own car wash.
Overall, we were pleasantly surprised. Until now, we had always gone with our gut feeling and used well-known rental companies or booked through the ADAC.
Next time, however, I would book the rental car directly with Tangerine rather than through a third-party booking portal. Well, you have to learn the hard way the first time...

Disgusting phone experience

Disgusting phone experience. I spent ages on hold only to speak to someone who couldn't help me because of their 'wired' policies. It feels like they try to create obstacles instead of solutions. This is the worst banking experience I have ever had.

I'm often unable to access my account…

I'm often unable to access my account because I don't receive a two-factor authentication code. This is a glaring issue for any bank, let alone one that's based solely online. If you value accessing your money, choose another bank.

Worst bank by far

Worst bank by far. All agents are overseas. Scotia has the worst payment system ever. 8 day holds on paycheques. The blanket holds are insane. They remove the money from thr business account on the 3rd or 4th day then hold the money for another 4 with weekends almost taking 12 to 14 days. Simplii clearance cheques in 4 days no questions asked. Tangerine and scotia will never see my business again. Do NOT bank here. What a joke

Honestly this horrible bank for their customer service. their policy is most wired and their people are most unrealistic.
If you call them for problem they create more problem for you instead of helping. Most disgusting phone experience with them.

Service reps don't know what they're doing

I've been trying to update my legal name attached to my account and have had to go back and forth repeatedly. No one knows what they're doing or talking about. I get told to do one thing, which ends up being wrong, so I call back to see what I have to do only to be told I had to do something completely different in a rude and condescending way. It's been a massive headache.

Good bank, if you don't ever need assistance

If you never have to resolve an issue with Tangerine, their on line banking works fine. But, if an issue arises, be prepared for a lot of "no" and no resolution to your problem. They become highly bureaucratic, and no common sense or reasonableness is applied. Super frustrating to deal with, and lots of time wasted

I cannot emphasize enough how far away…

I cannot emphasize enough how far away people need to stay away from this bank especially when it comes to mortgages. DO NOT HAVE A MORTGAGE THROUGH TANGERINE.
When it came time to renewing and transferring our mortgage they were dragging their heels and by the way this is still not resolved WEEKS LATER.
This was supposed to happen on October 27 and our new lender sent the request for the payout statement on October 17.
They keep saying they "sent the fax" however my new lender has said they haven't received one single fax. I also asked Tangerine if they could fax this statement to my lawyer which they also said no.
So they 1. won't send the payout statement any way other than fax 2. they won't fax it even to your lawyer 3. they won't provide proper fax confirmations
DO NOT HAVE MORTGAGE WITH TANGERINE THEY WILL DO EVERYTHING THEY CAN TO PREVENT A TRANSFER

You couldn't find a worse place to put…

You couldn't find a worse place to put your money if you tried. The other negative reviews say it all. The google reviews,, ya obviously the same thing.

They just don't work and there are security concerns I keep reading about now with people missing money from transactions. For me my, cards have been locked out since I opened the account basically lol.. . What a service . Can't even use it. My thought is that it's a thieves bank because it's online and more easy to game the system as it were. Tangerine clearly gives not a single Eff so we as customers should peace out and never go back. I wont even bank with Scotia after this nonsense. I'd NEVER EVER consider it after all this crap.

Lies and cheats

I had set up automatic payments to my credit margin. Some change in the system disconnected the automated payment, so I missed 4 minimum payments in a row by a few days, because I was confused about what was happening as I thought my automatic payment would still go through after I tried adding more funds to the source account to fix the issue. Long story short, my margin was frozen, confused, I reached out to the abysmal disrespectful and rude customer support. They told me I had to reimburse the full margin before it could be used again. I did! Then they told me I had to wait 6 months before it would unfreeze. Frustrating, why didn't they say that to start with? I waited. Now they tell me I can never use that margin again, the block is irreversible. Liars and crooks, plain and simple.

Save yourself the headache and don’t…

Save yourself the headache and don’t open an account with this company. For starters, they make up random release dates for deposited employment cheques. Some holds are 3 days, some 5/6 and others over 10 days… for a CANADIAN cheque. You cannot be financially stable and bank with Tangerine, with them making their own rules daily, you never know when you can rely on your money being released. Changes with the damn wind. They also have some weirdness going on on the backend, they like to decline your visa debit card at random so you have to call in and confirm you’re trying to make a purchase. It’s the modern day, we know when accounts have been accessed due to 2 factor authentication, but they act like it’s the Stone Age and every purchase is a threat of some kind. I’ve been with them 2 years and I can’t do it for another month even. Once my funds clear I’m closing all tangerine accounts and moving to another bank… not Scotia that’s for sure.

They hold your money hostage and don’t care about people

Their hold policy is absolutely disgusting!!
I deposited a check 2 days ago. This is a deposit that is normally done by direct deposit but, due to a processing error, it had to be a physical check this time.
That said, I called in to ask them if they could release the hold early because it’s all the money that I have and need to feed my family and get to a job interview. I was told that “Due the state of the account” they could not release the hold early. When I asked what they meant by the state of my account, the CSR denied saying that.
I asked to speak to a supervisor, again reiterating how important it was to get this hold released. I was told to just go and borrow money from friends. Seriously???? I literally have money that you are holding hostage, I will miss a very important job interview and can’t feed my family because you are holding my money until October 29 and your answer is “Just borrow money from friends”
How about you release my money so I can feed my family?
It’s definitely not worth their “no fee” banking if this is how they treat people trying to survive. It’s absolutely disgusting that a bank can treat people this way. There is absolutely ZERO compassion from them. I am literally sick to my stomach over this. The fact that they are ok with families not having food and people missing an important job interview is the most disturbing of it all.

Declining service

Service or any transaction is screechingly SLOW. EMT takes almost an hour; credit payment takes almost a week. Had one incident where the atm machine withdrew my cash before I was able to grab it and it took over 2 months to retrieve the fund. I used to love Tangerine but over the last year its drastically declined . Seems to be moving the opposite direction of moving ahead with productivity and efficiency
