Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Evaluating 697 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many people were dissatisfied with the customer service, finding it unhelpful, difficult to reach a live representative, and often receiving incorrect information. Customers frequently encountered issues with payments, including late fees despite timely payments, problems with automatic payments, and difficulties with processing transactions. They also reported unexpected account closures, credit limit reductions without clear reasons, and high interest rates that made balances difficult to manage. Reviewers also expressed frustration with the staff, describing them as rude, unhelpful, and unable to resolve basic requests. Additionally, some customers were unhappy with unexpected charges, such as fees for paper statements and retroactive interest charges, which led to inflated balances. The payment process itself was often problematic, with difficulties in setting up payments, limited payment options, and issues with transfers.

Site payment problems

Autopayment failed after set up and was consistently a problem every month which increased frustration. Late fees issued then due to failed autopayment on Synchrony's site. Experienced good customer service and closed the account after four months of failed autopayments.

INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO RECEIVE…

INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT TO RECEIVE PAYMENT(S) as a beneficiary of multiple ira / cd accounts! My father passed away in August of ‘25 and my 2 siblings and I repeatedly filled out multiple forms that were REPEATEDLY REJECTED! -even with going through line by line WITH their bankers on multiple calls! No checks, only rejection letters to receive in snail mail! They told us we could transfer funds from bank to bank, then told us it couldn’t be done. One of the worst experiences I’ve ever gone through with 6 figures for each of us at stake! I will never do business with Synchrony! If they have your money, good luck getting it back! I promise you, it will take months and months you rarely get the same person twice when calling! I honestly & whole heartedly believe that their processes and paperwork are purposely designed to make it as difficult as possible to receive funds that belong to you. Our entire experience was ABSOLUTELY ABSURD!

Synchrony bank has taken over the Lowes…

Synchrony bank has taken over the Lowes pro accounts. All good but sent the card to the wrong address. I called, had them send a new card, received new card, went online and set up new card account and autopay. New card does not work still. Called customer service again, they said the card I have does not exist, and I do not have the card they sent... technician on the phone was not helpful or polite, said "I will send another card but It will not help so good luck." So thanks for nothing Synchrony bank, I will be paying off the card and going else where for my commercial account. I have had this card for numerous years with no issue prior to Synchrony Bank assuming.

This is the worst bank with the most…

This is the worst bank with the most stupid people working there. They handle Amazon and decided not to credit payments that I've made. It cleared my bank and still days later not credited. The excuse was my payment was too large. Who new minimum due of 30.00 is too much. Amazon needs a new bank.

I've been a sams club credit card…

I've been a sams club credit card holder for many years paying in total balnce every month. They ruin my ccredit because I missed a payment because they either didn't send a statement or it was lost in the mail. I called and they waived the late fee because I've never even been late. But ruined my credit even though I paid the entire amount. Plus I was declined when I went to get gas again Sam's I will now close the account permanently.

DO NOT BANK WITH SYNCRONY!!!

I completely wish I could press zero star! This bank is robbing my money & my life! I have been thru a nightmare the last 8 months. My account was hacked with Amazon. And all was sent to me and all was returned. Long story! But this bank has such poor drained customer service. They keep adding charges on over & over and only taken half back off. At one point after contacting BBB the bank straightened out everything and had a zero balance. I hadn’t used the card since it was hacked. I closed the card to discover Syncrony can do whatever they want to the card. It’s closed to anyone but them. This should be against the law. In the end they say I owe 1000.00 and it will accure fees and interest til the day I die! This is so unfair! I kept my bill paid up for my charges. Amazon doesn’t care about their customers. They just say dispute it. I have a phone recording from Syncrony admitting she sees the over charges and I should be entitled a refund if they agree with her. Apparently they didn’t agree with her. They have no idea what they’re doing! I need a lawyer! I can’t take it no more! It’s already been 8 months of nerve cracking killing me Bad customer service. Even their statements are wrong! Also I closed the card and was told the bank can continue to add on anything they want to add on. This should be against the law. The card is closed to everyone is the way it should be

Synchrony Bank is one of the worst ones…

Synchrony Bank is one of the worst ones I have ever had to deal with. If you make your payments on time and you pay your card off they just literally cancel your card and then you have to reopen or you make a large payment and they put the payment on hold so you have no available credit. If you can avoid synchrony Bank do it, they're the worst

Used to be great

Used to be great. I dunno what happened but I’ve never had a problem with them before they acquired PayPal. They have no option to look at that credit card and the agents don’t seem to understand words or reading comprehension anymore.

Only give them $ you never want to get back

Worst Bank! If you ever want to get your funds back, do not give them to Synchrony Bank!!!!! We are fighting and fighting with them just to close our CDs and move the funds to another bank. They are denying us at every turn, creating more and more hoops to jump through, delaying another 7-10 days here, another hoop, mail a letter, have something notarized. It goes on and on!!!

Payment processing time too slow

Available credit was applied instantly after purchase, but payment process was way slower than any other banks that caused interest charges on late payment. Customer service was not easy to reach out and not helpful at all. I believe this is the worst credit card company in US.

deceptive practices

my available credit was lowered from $7000 to $300 after having my Lowe's card for 20 years. As long as I was using it to make large purchases it was fine but I have only used it for small purchases in the last year. When I called regarding the decrease, the account manager said basically we did a review and lowered it. After 20 years I asked? Yes that is how it works, she said. When I told her I would be closing my accounts, she asked if there was anything else she could do for me. What a joke! Worst customer service ever!!!

Account closed for no reason

They can close your account for no reason, and refuse to help you when you call them. Your cashback rewards are good as gone. Basically, expect pain and frustration.

Bank should be shut down. Weird responses from an otherwise unresponsive bank.

I had never imagined I should have seen reviews for a financial institution, no less a bank! My husband and I both opened JC Penny Cards during Christmas. Made payments immediately on both. Didn't know until the autopay set-up that these were with Synchrony. All seemed fine. didn't care.
On a separate note, due to recent travels with Virgin Atlantic and an offer for 60,000 welcome points, opened an account for myself in September 2025. All seemed fine, until a payment to LA County did not go thru for property taxes! CSR insisted, and Security Dept confirmed (after 12 weeks) that they believed the vendor to be a fraudulent vendor. The idiocy was appalling, because LA County California collects nearly $3 BILLION in taxes on credit cards!

I call after 2 months to check on what happened to the enquiry about the vendor; because I wrote letters to both, Synchrony and LA County FTB regarding the matter. LA County, a govt authority has the courtesy to respond by email in 3 days. Guess how long Synchrony's response takes? a whopping 2 calls, and 3 months later! Standard response: "We regret charge didnt go through. But we are firm on our stand. Due to security concerns... etc etc". When called, the CSR showed no signs of a declined charge 2 months ago.

I finish my 4k spend for the 60k points bonus and decide to take a break from their idiocy. But by then, my husband's card had started wracking charges for the 60k points. We had finished a 3k spend off the 4k requirement in 3 months, when abruptly, ALL 4 cards are closed. NO NOTIFICATION, NO PRIOR WARNING. I come to know that card was closed only when one of my autopays for a storage space kicks back! So I call them again. And like robots, the only answers from any and all CSRs is 'your card was closed' we dont know why'.

I leave a detailed message, twice, for a Gaurav K, Senior Security Specialist, number given on their letter, asking what was going on. NO CALL BACK!

So, Synchrony abruptly closes 4 cards under weird explanations! This, for customers with
- credit scores of very good-excellent from 790-807
- a family income of $300k+
- probably not more than 5 missed payments in 25 years of credit history; not a single payment missed in 7+ years
- has paid every month's payment on time and in full
- has spent 3k on a card where a 4k spend would give 60k points on VA. bank has not courtesy to respond with how they plan to make up for this lost bonus.
- has the capacity to wrack up nearly 30k in a year (a business Synchrony seems insistent on losing! What morons do they employ?)
- the courtesy to call the bank and speak to them multiple times, only to explain that there is something wrong with their credit and security system.

Wrote a detailed 2 page letter to CEO Brian Doubles and CCO Max Adler mid-April. 10 days later, no phone call from the CEO's office... just 2 letters again, stating

'... account was closed due to activity demonstrated on one or more accounts... and not due to your payment history...'.

What activity caused this? No one knows, no information! The most baffling response from a very unresponsive bank!

I'd not care, not bother wasting my time further.

Difficulty re-acquiring my CD cash from Synchrony

About 3 years ago I placed $10k in a 19 month CD at Synchrony bank. I chose that term because I needed that $10k in 19 months. After 19 months and I hadn't received my money back, I was shocked to find that Synchrony had rolled the CD over into a new CD rather than return the money to me. When I discovered this fact and discussed it with Synchrony, they informed me that I was outside of the time window where I could retrieve my money. So, I adjusted my finances and found the $10k elsewhere while the intended $10k sat at Synchrony for an additional 19 months (at a lower rate). Well, that second CD is due to mature in early June. I called and informed the representative (whose accent seemed to indicate that he was in southeast Asia) that I wanted my money returned to me as a paper check. No problem, I was told, "everything should be fine". But this individual was unable to provide me with any type of electronic verification that they had received my instructions. "You'll get an email when the CD matures" I was told. But, I don't trust them, so I wrote to customer service and received a message back today full of PR pablum...."if you have additional questions please feel free to contact us..." yada, yada, yada. Stay away from Synchrony Bank!

Fraudulent and deceptive practices

Fraudulent and deceptive practices. I signed up for their CreditCare care to pay for my dogs emergency surgery and was told if I pay the minimum payment every month, it will pay off before the interest kicks in. So I threw the card in a drawer, set up an auto pay and left it alone. Flash to years later and I was wondering why the payments were still going through, found that a 'card insurance' that I never signed up for was added to my account which is, I suspect, why I didn't have it paid off in time and caused the balance to grow ending up at a higher amount than the surgery was to begin with.
I tried to dispute the insurance service and they promised to send an letter proving I added it, but it will take 5 to 7 days. While waiting, I closed the account and paid off the entire insane amount just to stop the bleeding. The supervisor I spoke to who closed my account didn't mention any additional charges or anything else.
Well the letter came in and their 'proof' was just a few lines saying 'Our research indicates you purchased Payment Security on 06/11/2024 via an online enrollment'... that is not proof, I don't think I even logged into my account at all that year. Add to that I logged into the account to have it in front of me when I called them back and found a new 76$ interest charge.... how is there interest on a 0$ balance, according to the rep its because they charge interest in arrears, but then why didn't a supervisor closing my account, knowing I was trying to get to a 0 balance, bother to mention this to me on his recorded line? Had I not gotten this letter prompting me to login, I likely would have missed the brand new questionable charge and been back in their pocket with recurring late fees.
Consumer be warned, do NOT use this company unless you absolutely have to, and even then, watch over your account like a hawk, and do not trust anything they tell you.
