About Sub Zero Technology Ltd

Written by the company

During a cold and wet scramble along the Lake Districts Helvellyn mountain in 1967, Derek Laxton hit upon inspiration for a technical range of thermal underwear.

With a trained mechanical engineer background and a lust to run his own company, in 1969 Sub Zero Technology was created. From their original Leicester Textile Mill, the Sub Zero Factor 1 range of thermal base layers was born to worldwide acclaim.

In the five decades since, Sub Zero have expanded their range to include heavy weight thermal mid layers through to insulating down jackets. Never a company to stand still, Sub Zero have adopted new manufacturing processes, such as seamless knitting technology and body mapping, to produce garments that are at the pinnacle of performance.

Sub Zero today is still family owned, with the third generation of Laxtons running the company. The factory and offices now reside in rural Leicestershire, with the workforce coming from the local communities. Sub Zeros work ethos is still true today as it was form its interception - to design and manufacture technical outdoor clothing using the finest technical textiles for the words most extreme conditions.

Many years of performance

I've ordered direct from SZ several times and called them on the phone for product information. They have always been reliable, polite and their own range of products have lasted me many years of outdoors and sporting use. Highly recommended.

Satisfied customer

I bought two lemon short sleeved base layer t shirts from Sub zero in about 1982. They were worn annually by myself and running partner over many years in the Karrimor Mountain Marathon. They never let me down in rain, snow or shine always warm wet or dry, quick drying. They always came up clean after washing without any odour remaining. I told many people of their superb properties and found no need to replace them. I also thought that after so many years they surely were not still made.
Well I was wrong.
Whilst camping with my 7 year old grand daughter recently my wife suggested that she might like to wear one of the shirts at night. Well that was it, for two days it hardly came off.
I finally looked up Sub Zero on the internet and was very pleased to see they continue to make an almost identical shirt.
I immediately ordered one. Two sizes bigger than the original, it fitted just as well!! My only disappointment is that I could not replace my day-glo yellow, which has now found a new home.

Hello Pete. The Factor 1 we produce today is almost identical to the ones we manufactured 40 years ago. The yarn is exactly the same (100% Polyamide) as we have yet to find anything that improves on it. We have however had to change the machine the fabric is knitted on so the rib construction is slightly different. The fluorescent yellow was a great colour but not economical to produce. In the end we still sell around 95% of our products in black. We have introduced a new baselayer called Factor 1 Plus, This is made form the same yarn as the Factor 1 but knitted on a semi-seamless machine. It is slightly warmer as there is a bit more yarn in its construction but as we dye the garments post production (rather than during the fabric stage with the Factor 1) we can manufacture smaller colour runs. We do have some fluorescent long sleeve tops in stock this new range.

Have used subzero gear for about 14 years approximately. I purchased my first Top from Kent canoe superstore, Have still got it and still use it .There is not a lot of firms that sell equipment that last like that. I Have been out kayaking in snow ,rain ,winds, There clothing kept me nice and warm.
Thanks SubZero

Hello John. We hear that a lot from our customers which is great, but it isn't necessary great for sales if your product is lasting for 15+ years. It's a good thing people gain weight and fancy a different colour is all i can say.

solved our problem !

needed a sink plug of some sort for our new ensuite sinks, which strangely do not have any at all ? ( some sort of designer statement ) Subzero had just the thing to fit the "flat" opening. very fast delivery, spot on !

Hello Barry. We had exactly the same problem with our new sinks at home. We used these until we worked out how to get a plug installed that didn't need a chain (as there was no attachment point). In the end we got some integrated push up ones that were part of the waste system from screwfix.

A quality product at a sensible price.

I bought stainless steel thermal mugs which are far superior to the cheap plastic mugs available elsewhere. They are fully sealed so there is no danger of spilling liquid when carrying them. The order came within the delivery time stated and the goods were well packed. No problems

Simply the best thernals you can buy

I am a newcomer to Sub Zero thermals after wearing other famous brands for the past twenty years whilst on the hills. A good friend of mine introduced me to Sub Zero last winter and they are by far the best thermals I have ever worn.

Speedy delivery and brilliant value

We recently purchased a Little Life Back Carrier from Sub Zero.

The item was £30 less than the nearest competitor on price and £40 to £50 cheaper than the rrp representing great value.

The item was dispatched and delivered very quickly and was well packaged.

Would definitely recommend!

The best thermal long johns I've ever owned

My previous pair of factor 1 long johns from subzero lasted ten years. In the time in between I've tried other brands. I've come back to subzero because they are the best wearing I've ever owned. More than that, they don't pick up smells when on long wet hikes like other leggings do. I can't recommend these highly enough.

Furthermore, the delivery service was great. I got my two new pairs within 5 business days to USA, and just in time for my autumn trip to Canada with subzero conditions... Perfect!

One note though, my order confirmation didn't make it past my spam filter - so look out for it!

Hello Mark

We are aware of the issue some people have with the order confirmation. Usually it is down to over eager viral software. Our background software that runs the site is currently being upgraded so it should eliminate this problem.

Good service, pioneering hot-weather wear

I live in Florida, so have little need for cool weather clothing and essentially no need to deal with cool wet weather. In recent years, fabrics somewhat like Sub-Zero's Cool T and All Active have gone mass-market, but Sub-Zero still seems more comfortable and better made. I've also become a bit of a fan of clothing made in high-wage countries. My latest order included a lightweight smock, made in EU, which turns out to be excellent for cool, showery days at the beach. It's a vastly more sophisticated counterpart to a simple made-in-US Katin nylon snap-closed jacket.

Sub-Zero's service has been quick and reliable.

Great products at great prices.

Really pleased with the 2 orders I have placed in the last month. Both were delivered within a couple of days. I am impressed with the quality of their own products and with the value for money they represent compared with similar products from more well known competitors.
