Tricky taking phone to phone payments

I was so impressed by the easy set up and even did a test to make sure it all worked. Then I tried it for my first 3 customers and it didn't work. I was trying to take payment via my Square phone app from their Google Wallet/Apple Pay. We didn't know if there was a weak signal or we didn't have our phones in the right position. Finally, on my 3rd customer, after a few minutes of moving the phones to different positions and almost giving up, we heard the 'ding' of the transaction being processed but then I was asked for a PIN, something that hadn't happened when I tested it. I was not aware I needed a PIN. Was it because the amount was too high at $240? Or because I didn't have a paid account? I'm still trying to figure it out but may have to abandon the whole thing :(
UPDATE: Thanks Square for your reply. I understand now it was their PIN that needed to be entered, not mine. I have been looking for a picture to illustrate phone positions when paying from a mobile wallet to my Square app as I understand they need to put their phone to the back up my Android phone in the centre but what position should their phone be in? Because we tried every option but didn't work. I will keep trying but so embarrassing when it doesn't work. I will experimant at home first.

We’re really sorry to hear your first live transactions didn’t go as smoothly as your test. That’s understandably frustrating, especially after taking the time to make sure everything was set up correctly.

A few things may help clarify what happened. When accepting contactless payments through Apple Pay or Google Wallet using Tap to Pay on your phone, customers may be prompted to enter a PIN depending on their card issuer, the transaction amount, or security settings on their device. This isn’t related to having a paid account, and it doesn’t mean something was set up incorrectly. In many cases, higher transaction amounts (like $240) can trigger additional verification.

As for positioning, the customer’s phone should be held close to the top/back of your device for a few seconds until you hear the confirmation sound. Weak signal shouldn’t affect contactless payments, since they use NFC rather than Wi-Fi between devices, but stable internet is still required to complete the transaction.

Square for accepting payments

Square for accepting payments using my iPhone is ideal. No need to charge a separate piece of hardware.
Clients can use their phone to pay securely as well. Or use a physical credit card.
