The Arduino Pro Mini was selected for my well pump controller because of the minimum power requirements since the controller is always powered using a small solar panel and a lithium battery. I used a Sparkfun FTDI Basic (3.3V) to program the Arduino Pro Mini.
Bought a cheap no-name Arduino Pro Mini board first: couldn't program it using FTDI cable (had to program using AVR-ISP MkII programmer instead), sleep current was still 28 uA even with all optimizations and removing unnecessary components. Ordered this SparkFun Arduino Pro Mini instead: it programs using FTDI cable with no issues, operates down at sub-1-uA current in sleep mode (0.2-uA with all optimizations and disconnecting voltage reg). I suspect the cheap no-name board has a counterfeit Atmel IC. The SparkFun board appears to have a genuine Atmel IC.
