A Costly Lesson – Don’t Make the Same Mistake I Did

Absolutely appalling experience. I would never recommend this company to anyone.

I rented a storage unit for around three weeks after being offered what sounded like a straightforward deal over the phone. The representative told me it would cost £1 for the first month, followed by £60 thereafter. Since I only needed the unit for around three weeks, I specifically explained my situation before agreeing. At no point during that conversation was I told that I would have to give 15 days’ notice before moving my belongings out.

After I emptied the unit, I was then told I owed an additional £80 because I hadn’t given the required notice. This came as a complete shock. Their response was simply that it was “in the terms and conditions.” That’s not good enough.

If you’re explaining the agreement over the phone and asking customers to commit based on what you’ve told them, then you have a responsibility to mention important conditions like a mandatory 15-day notice period. This isn’t some insignificant clause hidden away in the small print—it’s something that directly affects how much customers end up paying. The representative was happy to explain the promotional price but somehow failed to mention the one condition that would leave me with an unexpected bill.

As a university student living on a very tight budget, an unexpected £80 charge is a huge amount of money. I chose this storage company because I believed I was getting a simple, affordable option while I was between accommodations. Instead, I’ve been left feeling misled and out of pocket over something I was never verbally informed about. Had I been told about the notice requirement, I would have given notice immediately or chosen another company altogether.

The customer service afterwards was just as disappointing. Rather than acknowledging that their representative had failed to explain a key condition of the agreement, they simply hid behind the terms and conditions. That’s not transparency, and it’s certainly not good customer service.

I honestly feel like this system is designed to catch customers out. If a condition can result in an £80 charge, it should be clearly explained during the phone call—not quietly left for customers to discover after the fact.

Be extremely careful if you choose this company. Don’t rely solely on what you’re told over the phone because it appears you may not be given all the information you need to make an informed decision. Read every single line of the terms and conditions, because you could easily find yourself facing unexpected charges just like I did.

This has been one of the most frustrating customer experiences I’ve ever had. I feel completely misled, and I will never use Shurgard again. There are plenty of storage companies that are honest and transparent with their customers—I strongly recommend looking elsewhere.

Edward was incredibly helpful for everything I needed. I had not been in my storage unit for over 6 years and had no idea what to do but he made everything clear and simple for me and was able to assist with all my questions.

Fabulous customer service

Fabulous customer service. We have never used a self storage before. Edward was great! He spent time running through how things worked and showed us entry and exit procedures etc. Great storage facility, lots of room for delivery Lorry’s and vans. Can’t recommend enough!

I have a unit in Reading.

I have a unit in Reading.
I called Shurgard because I couldn't open the shutter to my unit.
After speaking to him on the phone about the problem, Chris from the nearest manned office was along within minutes and managed to get the door open and discover the problem. He said he would speak to the maintenance team and get them to contact me to come and fix it. I am still waiting for that.
Chris was friendly, professional and very helpful.

Excellent service

I have been a customer with Shurgard for 15 months and have spoken to all customer service agents within the store, who are helpful, patient, informative, professional and genuinely try to give you the best price. Explain all dets inc insurance and other factors you need to know with regards storage.
However, I'd like to give a review on Karen who is absolutely brilliant.
She has helped with discounts and finding new units if needed due to the fact this is my daughter's unit who has moved abroad. Karen has made it easy with adding security questions to the account so I can access as not always easy when my daughter is away.
However, I needed to gain access to the unit in December and couldn't find the lock number or key. This was stressful as near to Christmas and I was travelling the following day.
Karen saved me hours of thinking I needed a locksmith or trying to locate spare keys and simply made arrangements. I was with her and she used the stores equipment and although extremely busy, put aside time, imme8with me attended the unit and within a few minutes I was in the unit!!
Provided me with a new lock and I took what was needed and on my way home. Thank you Karen, you saved me so much time and stress. Excellent service and I will remain with this company. 👍

First time using a storage locker …

I have started using storage in the Reading A33 branch. Online set up was so easy. I packed my boxes into the car and went straight over to their Reception. The 3 people in the office were so welcoming and made sure I was all set up and answered any questions I had.
I took them up on the offer to show me where my storage locker was and made sure I could enter and lock up.
Couldn’t have been easier and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful!
