Absolutely appalling experience – avoid at all costs.

My experience with Shurgard Northampton has been nothing short of disgraceful. I discovered a German cockroach infestation in my storage unit, which left me seriously concerned about the condition and safety of my belongings. The last thing anyone expects when paying for storage is to worry about pests damaging their possessions.

When I emptied the items I was prepared to remove and closed the unit down, I left behind the belongings that had been affected by the German cockroach infestation. Instead of dealing with the situation fairly, Shurgard placed their own lock on the unit, preventing me from accessing it to deal with the remaining items. Despite locking me out of the unit, they continued charging me as though I still had full use of it. Being denied access while still being billed is completely unacceptable and left me feeling ignored and taken advantage of.

Customer service was disappointing, with little interest shown in resolving my concerns or taking responsibility for what I experienced. Instead of receiving help, I was left frustrated, out of pocket, and feeling like my complaints simply didn't matter.

I trusted Shurgard to provide secure, clean storage and fair treatment as a customer. Instead, I experienced what I consider to be poor hygiene standards, unacceptable customer service, and ongoing charges despite being unable to access my unit after it was locked by the company.

Based on my experience, I would not recommend Shurgard Northampton to anyone. There are plenty of other storage companies that deserve your business far more than this one

Awful company! They changed the site I was storing at to a remote site, so instead of easy access I was told I had to go to another site much further away to pay my bill. Then when I finally accessed my unit I found items had been stolen since they had cut my lock and forced entry because I was late paying. When I complained they told me to call the police WFT!? It was only their staff that had gone into my unit, but they didn't seem to care!!!

I think it’s important to point out that this Northampton town centre location is now unmanned, although staff from the Riverside branch manage it and visit daily.
As a facility It could do with better lighting inside and new trolleys. Shurgard removed several lamps from the corridors which has left it a bit gloomy in the units so I take my own light. The roller shutter has also been deactivated but this shouldn’t be a problem unless you have an item too wide to fit through the door.
You use an app to open the gate and the door to the facility, which is simple most of the time. I have had a few problems with access which would have been easy to fix while it was manned, but have now all been sorted by the excellent Riverside manager and her team.

All in all it is a good facility with a few letdowns, these are all from company decisions (and clearly cost-cutting) and do need a little investment to sort.
These are largely compensated for by a really great team at Riverside who will do everything they can to help.

Communication from the team was clear and made the first day very easy.
Follow up call was appreciated and couple of queries were answered straight away in a friendly polite manner.

My initial impressions of Shurgard were rather negative as I had booked and paid for a 180 sq ft storage unit to ensure it fit furniture for a 3 bed house. Having arrived at the site with a full van and two removal men, I was taken to a unit 65 sq ft in size. I queried this and Lesley, who was taking me round, checked for another 180 sq ft unit and again, when we arrived, it was only 65 sq ft. Luckily, he found one on the ground floor that was the right size (although still only 170 sq ft when I am paying for 180) and he and his colleague, Flo, were excellent at sorting this swap with their manager, especially when I was originally advised I would need to pay more if I was swapping to a ground floor unit. Shurgard need to sort their systems out so this doesn't happen to other people but I am very grateful Lesley and Flo were there to help out and make sure my experience improved.

Friendly staff, very helpful, and i feel at ease knowing my property is safe.
