The Running One Stop Shop

The One Stop Shop consisted of two parts; the critical speed test and a physio session. The test was probably more geared toward elite runners. I was unable to complete it, despite having a reasonable level of fitness. However, it was still good to give it a go and Gavin provided feedback even though I had incomplete results. He also offered to do a repeat test another day that suited. The physio session, on the other hand, would be useful if not essential for all runners, to identify any potential issues with your musculoskeletal system. Follow up exercises were provided the following week tailored for any weaknesses found.

Fab coach

I’ve been coached by Gavin for a year now. I started following him on Instagram, attended many of his excellent webinars, and soon realised that he had so much running specific knowledge that I needed to help me improve as a runner. I was a runner that barely did speed work and wasn’t running as much I as really wanted to.
With Gavin’s programming, I managed to gradually increase the amount I was running, overcoming previous niggles I’d had, and as the year has gone on I’ve set PB’s in a range of distances.
Gavin sets a variety of speed workouts which really test me mentally as well as physically! But the biggest thing I’ve worked on is really slowing down the easy runs and running to HR, which I had never previously done. I definitely would have kept injuring myself had I not slowed down!
The app and program Gavin uses is great as everything syncs to my watch and I don't really have to think much! It also allows me to move sessions around which is useful when I have lots of work on or I need to be a parent first and foremost!
I can highly recommend Gavin at Running Smarter 😊

Brilliant, practical webinar

Great webinar and they send the notes afterwards so you can just focus on paying attention while you are there. I got a lot of really great ideas on how to improve my running and also why it will improve my running. Love the sample plans and videos of the exercises too. Really great!

Absolutely Fantastic Running Coach! :D

I've never had a running coach before, nor have I ever run a marathon, so when Gavin messaged me on IG about wanting to work with me for the St. Jude's Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Full Marathon, I was intrigued.

From the first video consultation, I knew that this was a guy who knew what he was talking about. As a nurse, I love evidence-based research and practice. During his presentation, he presented concepts that I've never heard of before, but absolutely made sense, such as the ALL OUT test and running based on heart rate zones. Backing it up with the science and the evidence sealed the deal for me.

I was on a 16 week training schedule, starting in February, and I was appreciative of the set-up: 3 easy runs and one hard session each week. He pushed me past my comfort zone, but it has made me such a strong runner.

What was super nice, not only physically, but also mentally, were the recovery weeks. They were a great break to let my body recover before going into the next training block.

He also provided me with a variety of workouts to supplement my running and to help me get over my injuries that seemed like Whack-a-Mole: once one injury goes away, another one comes up.

The bi-weekly video consultations were great for touching base about where I was at physically and emotionally. He was also easy to contact even with the time difference (I live in Seattle, so I'm 8 hours behind him).

Ultimately, my goal was to run my marathon in under 4 hours. Due to everything going on, my race was postponed and I decided to run my own virtual marathon on June 7th. I didn't just meet my goal; I smashed it, running a 3:48 marathon!!!

If you're looking for a running coach who uses science to help you succeed, look no further than Gavin. He'll help you become stronger and faster by...running smarter ;)

I joined the how to run more…in hot weather webinar

I joined the how to run more efficiently in the heat webinar because I live in Texas. And I found the webinar to be a great resource of information and tips and it definitely gave pointers that will translate to what I do here. I even had a couple of questions after the webinar and he quickly got back to me and was so helpful and nice and I will be back to watch on other topics as well. I highly recommend this!

Helpful information. Don't miss out.

The information provided was interesting and informative. Definitely would want more people (runners) to have this knowledge about the effects of the food you eat, when you eat and the different ways you could consume it, which can really help them up their game.

Very useful webinars on running and nutrition

During the past few weeks I participated in Dr. Gavin McClean's series of live webinars presented with nutritionist Faisal Alshawa. The topics have been very relevant to running and other fitness activities and included Learn how to maximise your training with the right fuel, How To Do Intervals Like A Pro, Nutrition for running and Eat to perform. I thank you both for sharing this useful information and recommend your webinars to anyone you may be interested.
