I’ve gone from having never driven a car to passing my test first time. Les is an amazing instructor who is patient, always helping you improve and also a lovely guy. I would absolutely recommend RoadSmart to anybody wanting to learn to drive.

can’t recommend Les highly enough. As a naturally anxious driver who had a very negative experience with previous lessons, I was extremely nervous about getting back behind the wheel. From the very beginning, Les put me completely at ease. He is patient, kind, and genuinely cares about you as a person not just as a learner driver.
His knowledge is exceptional, and his calm, supportive teaching style, along with the practical techniques he shares, have made a huge difference to my confidence and ability. I would wholeheartedly recommend Les to anyone, especially those who feel anxious about driving. Thank you so much Les!

Before I ever started driving I was completely terrified and felt as though learning to drive would be a bore. As soon as I had my first lesson with Les I was put completely to ease and I realised that this would actually be so enjoyable. Not only is Les incredibly experienced and knowledgeable but he is also thoughtful, and would always thoroughly explain any questions I had about driving. He is also extremely calm and patient - he never once became angry or frustrated with me if I made a mistake, so I always felt completely safe during my lessons.
Lessons are very individualised, where he would always ask at the beginning what I wanted to focus on in each lesson whilst ensuring we were still covering everything I needed to pass my test. I ended up passing with 0 minors, but more importantly I feel as though Les taught me how to be a good and safe driver beyond the driving test. I truthfully cannot recommend Les enough he is a completely perfect driving instructor !! :) I am honestly sad I don’t need lessons anymore lol

When I started learning with Les I had next to no knowledge of driving and I was systematically and thoughtfully taught how to drive. I was given lessons on country roads, city centre driving and even night-time driving, during this training I became capable and confident in my ability to handle any situation on the road. I was able to pass my physical driving test first-time due to this training.

Just passed my test FIRST TIME, after being taught exclusively by Les. From the first time ever operating a car to passing my test, it has been a fun and positive experience due to Les' kind and calm persona. His teaching style has been flexible to suit my driving style and his incredible knowledge of all things on the road and safety has reinforced my understanding at every point along the way.

I now have faith in my ability to drive well and safely and going into my test I was filled to the brim with confidence, all thanks to Les, not an ounce of self doubt was present on the day.

All your driving lessons are tracked on an app, so you can keep track of your lessons and the progress you’ve made and the routes you’ve driven. The whole experience, from your time in the car, using the app and getting reminder notifications, is a really well designed service that Les offers.

When I first started lessons, I had severe driving anxiety and was afraid of making mistakes. Les was incredibly patient and used a variety of teaching strategies to help me build confidence and develop key skills like awareness and anticipation.

He structures lessons using a clear syllabus through the MyDriveTime app, which helped me stay focused and track my progress. We set achievable goals for each lesson, and gradually worked through everything from dual carriageways to country roads. He also introduced me to techniques like commentary driving, which helped me handle hazards safely and independently.

Thanks to Les, I now feel confident tackling complex situations like multilane roundabouts and driving in unfamiliar areas. I truly feel like I’ve learned how to drive and not just how to pass the test.

Les is an incredible instructor, who puts so much effort and care into every lesson. Focusing on safety and planning ahead, he is able to push you to develop your skills without going too far out of your comfort zone. Reflections after each lesson allowed me to learn from my mistakes, while also acknowledging the positives from each drive, even when I thought I would never be able to drive independently. He has taken me from an anxious learner to a safe, confident driver, which allowed me to pass my test first time with 1 minor!

I recently passed my test with Les first time. Driving was something I’ve always wanted to do and kept putting off over the years and never stuck to my lessons with any other instructor. Les’ lessons were engaging and helped me stay focused to finally persevering and passing my test.

The best instructor I’ve ever had; Les is extremely knowledgeable, supportive and calm and has gotten me from struggling with basically every aspect of driving to being able to say I’m a confident driver, having passed my test first time with only 1 minor.

I started out with major driving anxiety, fear of the roads and thinking I would never be able to pass but Les has been so supportive in the way he teaches and helping me understand what I need to do to be a better driver for myself and others on the road. I’ve got a positive outlook on driving now, and I really feel it’s down to the time Les puts into developing core skills like judgment, planning and awareness in the car. I would also like to mention how patient Les is! I really really struggled in the beginning but Les tailored lessons so I could push myself to try new skills or keep practicing ones that he knew I’d get the hang of, which helped massively with my confidence levels and getting to grips with everything on the road.

Very enjoyable lessons and I would recommend to anybody looking to find an instructor in Newcastle!

I started my lessons with Les after losing my confidence in driving and having failed a test a couple of years prior with another instructor. Before I started with Les I didn’t have any faith in my ability to drive, I didn’t enjoy driving, and I was even questioning whether or not my brain was even equipped for it!

From the first moment I sat in the car, Les had complete faith in my mind and my ability to drive, his focus on the mental aspects of driving and his understanding of the anxieties and stress that come with learning to drive put me at ease and made me start to gain confidence again. Every time I made a mistake or was unsure of something he was determined to get to the root of the issue and understand how I was thinking and how we could adapt the lessons in a way that worked specifically for me and benefitted me the most. This made every lesson feel unique and personalised to me and helped me progress faster than I ever thought I could.
His main focus of ensuring that you drive safely rather than “perfectly” also put me more at ease in my driving, he created an atmosphere in the lessons that was very calm and friendly - as long as my driving was safe, then there was no such thing as a mistake, and having him take away that pressure that you might feel to learn to drive faultlessly, actually made my driving feel effortless and free, because I know that as long as what I’m doing is safe then there are no mistakes.

When it came to mock tests and coming up to my actual test I suffered from very bad test anxiety, which affected my driving ability quite substantially. Les talked me through my thoughts and my thinking patterns and we worked together to rewire my brain to be positive and to be calm in such situations, he sent me multiple different resources that I could use in my spare time to help me work and improve on my anxiety, which helped massively. Every lesson you could tell how genuinely he cared and how important the development of, not just your driving, but yourself as a person was to him. It gave me the confidence to push through the difficult moments in lessons and I passed my test first time with Les with only 2 minors!

Les was always calm and patient throughout my entire time with him. His philosophy of developing the safe and smart driving mindset as opposed to just “teaching you how to drive” was so important and a key turning point in my driving ability having had previous instructors who trained the “right way to drive”.

I started with no confidence, anxiety, pessimism towards my own abilities, and doubting my own brain. Six months later and I am now a fully fletched legal driver, and I love driving, it feels like second nature now.

I can’t thank Les enough for how much he has done for me and my driving. He has helped both me and my girlfriend pass our tests at the first time of asking with him and I don’t have enough words (even after this long review) to express how much I recommend Les to anyone and everyone. Every lesson was a delight and choosing Les to coach me through my driving was the best decision I’ve ever made.

Les is a fantastic instructor I couldn’t imagine learning from a better guy. He always gives you time to learn new things and never puts you under any pressure or stress. I would thoroughly recommend Les to anyone that is wanting to learn to drive.

Les is such a calm and laid back driving instructor but he also makes sure you’re doing the right thing and always helps you correct faults. He makes it so easy to learn as you always feel relaxed while at the wheel and you pick things up very easy by the way he teaches.

Les is a amazing driving instructor from the start he helped me to become a much safer driver, he is really patient and let's you learn at your own pace rather than rushing you. By the time I was put in for my test I felt I could confidently drive safely on any road. Massive thank you.

Les was an amazing instructor who helped me work through all of my anxiety surrounding driving. From the beginning, Les was calm and informative and adapted to my style of learning. He boosted my confidence and always worked with me to reflect on any mistakes and helped me realise on my own what I needed to change. Les created fun yet educational lessons, and I always looked forward to my lessons each week. I enjoyed the reflective aspect of the lessons, writing notes about what I enjoyed, what I struggled with, and what I would like to work on moving forward. I found that Les made learning to drive enjoyable and never pushed me to do anything he didn't believe I was capable of. Without Les' belief and confidence in me, I would still feel unconfident and anxious on the roads. After 8 months of hard work with Les and his guidance, I was able to pass first time with only 2 minors!

I couldn’t be more satisfied with my experience learning to drive with Les! Thanks to Les, I have become a safe, competent and confident driver. His style of teaching, combined with the regular opportunities for reflection, makes learning both easy and enjoyable. I highly recommend Les to anyone looking for an excellent instructor!

From beginning to end Les helped me improve my confidence and ability when driving and i’m so grateful for the help on both my theory and test passing both first time.
