Total rip offs

How do you know a property manager/owner/landlord is dishonest? How about when they take your deposit money to fix things that they had been aware were problems for two years prior? How about they take your deposit money for carpet cleaning when it was just professionally cleaned? How about they take your deposit money for taking out trash, when they refused to provide regular trash service for months prior? The trash problem was so bad I paid $225.00 to have someone take it - I should have just left it all there for them. Just like I shouldn't have paid the last month's rent, I was only there for 11 days and they wouldn't have been able to do much about it.
