Many customers expressed significant dissatisfaction with the customer service, describing it as poor, unhelpful, and difficult to reach, often leading to endless email exchanges and automatic responses that did not resolve their issues. People frequently encountered problems with account access, including being locked out due to suspicious activity or unstated reasons, and found recovery methods to be non-user-friendly and ineffective, resulting in loss of access to important emails and documents. Reviewers also criticized the inflexibility of plans and the constant upselling for subscriptions, which they found intrusive and frustrating. However, some customers also noted a positive experience with the platform, praising its clean and minimal interface, smooth operation, and intuitive design. A few other people also felt that customer support was responsive and helpful, especially for those with paid subscriptions, and appreciated the ease of setting up family accounts and custom domains.

For some reason I can’t receive or send emails to my new employer. I’ve tried multiple times to contact support. They just send you a ticket number and say they’ll get back to you but don’t.
So I tried hard to fix the problem myself but hit dead ends because you need Protons admin to change settings.
Basically if you run into trouble you’re on your own, there is no customer support.
I’ve consequently cancelled my mail plus subscription. It’s a shame because I do like the platform.

Don't believe all this stuff about being based in Switzerland lessens the chance of you being taken advantage of. I am a senior but apparently I subscribed to Mail Plus ($59.88 CAD) something I would never do when my pension don't even pay the rent. Another word of advice don't put documents on these websites just because they offer you space. You wouldn't give your documents to a stranger on the street so why would you do it on one of these sites.

I requested an export of all of my…

I requested an export of all of my information from Yahoo Mail to Proton. Proton used their easy switch export tool to do this. About half of the info made it over. The contact names were there, but barely any emails were, not one of my family members as well. The help was horrible. There was no chat and no phone assistance. After some time, I received multiple bot emails from "Monika" of a repetitive nature, even when I reworded my question, hoping she would understand what I was asking. I would receive the same response that didn't apply at all. Google would help at times, but its website is nothing but a headache. While this was going on, I noticed my plan had changed. I purchased their 3.99/month ProtonMail Plus plan at 47.88. At this point, it showed I was switched to their monthly plan at 4.99 a month. I never requested a change. I never received an email. I was okay with this as long as they would give me a refund. That didn't happen. Meanwhile, I continued to solve multiple issues on my own over 5 days. Something popped up called Duo, no pricetag next to it, but advising to try this for my problem. Ok, I'll try this, but I'm highly doubtful. It didn't help. The 4th or 5th day, my plan had been switched to Proton Duo at 19.99. Once again, I never authorized a change, never received an email confirmation. I informed them of this. Monika had zero compassion, only saying they will take it out of the 47.88 I paid and will continue to do so. No options for me. I transferred everything back to Yahoo myself. On Saturday, May 2, I requested that my account be closed and a full refund. The only response was that we need your credit card so we can take more money out of the money so we have a payment option to upgrade your account. I found a page after much digging where you are supposedly able to cancel an account, but there's no cancel option on that page. I only have an overly detailed list of their extremely expensive plans. This has caused me so much unnecessary stress and frustration.

5/4/26: Dear Proton,
I'm always amazed and wonder how people like you and Trump can sit and feel okay with your lies. Are you delusional? Everything you said was a lie. You never sent an email telling me I authorized a change in plans. Because you know I didn't! With the first change you made, had I switched from the yearly plan to the monthly plan why didn't you give me a refund? Why were you holding my money hostage if I had the right to pay monthly and leave? If you were an honest company, you would know that monthly subscribers who paid $44.87 and our company switched them to the monthly plan at 4.99 deserves an immediate refund and sincere apology. This isn't rocket science. I never authorized to upgrade to duo either. You scammed me. I was never informed until I asked your so-called real person, Monika, who is so robotic and must wear an AI costume at her desk. I bet she aced your training class on the importance of lack of compassion and the company is always right. It sure seems like she's been trained that way demonstrated by her mind boggling lack of understanding of my questions and concerns, lack of compassion and lack of taking action regarding this final request. Your company is full of jerks. Your reviews say it all. I've read all of them from every reliable source. Your company is corrupt and a scam. You are predators. Why can't you address what I ask for? I put it out straight to you guys. I took care of making sure everything was deleted or transferred by myself elsewhere. Nothing is on there. You're holding me hostage, will not cancel my account, and take accountability for how you handled this situation. I want my money back. $44.87. I should be asking for so much more for the week of hell you put me through.

5/4 1343: Monika blames me for making the changes. How dare this idiot put the blame on me! I am beyond cautious with my money and never click on things that sound fishy. That's why my credit score is 880. She refused, once again, to refund my money. I hope thousands and thousands do their homework and read these reviews before hastily signing up for this criminal site. They've already been reported to the FTC. I hope they are shaken and taken down for all of the harm they inflict on customers.
5/5: Thank God, now I am dealing with David. He kindly sent an email stating he will fully refund me for my account. Ok. We'll see.
5/7: After multiple requests for a confirmation of refund, I emailed David and told him he was stringing me along a bit too long and avoiding my questions. He responded, he refunded our CC, and it should take 5-10 days. No confirmation of this has been given. I'll let it slide....for now. But watch out, David.

One of the best Cyber Security services on the market

So, having moved over to the Proton family of products, I am impressed. Started off with the free offering, but quickly moved over to an Ultimate subscription.
Based on my opinions opinion of cyber security tools I have used as a professional in 30+ years, this is the most complete set of security solutions I have ever used. And thus fully recommend to any user or organisation who is concerned about Cyber Security Exposure.

I use the tool cross platform between an iPhone 16, MacBook Air and a Desktop iOS platform, and found the family of products from Proton Mail, Calendar, VPN, Authenticator etc to be very easy to use with a low learning curve, and in my case I am now fully migrating over to the Proton Platforms to support my business and personal activities.

On the basis of the above, and other positive feedback, I am at a loss to understand why there are unusually soo ‘many’ negative reviews, and in some cases do question the credibility of the comments.

Hi Chris. Thanks for sharing your feedback. Free Proton accounts may be deleted after 12 months of inactivity under our inactive account policy, and reminder emails are sent before this happens. This is based on account inactivity, not email content. Proton cannot read your emails because they are protected with end-to-end encryption. Thanks for your feedback. If you try to register for a third-party service like Twitch right after creating a free Proton account, it can trigger a temporary restriction designed to prevent abusive registrations. Adding and verifying a recovery method usually resolves this, and instructions are also sent in the automated email. Upgrading to a paid plan also removes this limitation. If you still have trouble, please contact us at https://proton.me/support/contact.

Switched to Proton Mail recently because I was getting tired of all the targeted ads on my old email provider. The interface is super clean and minimal, which I love. Knowing everything is end-to-end encrypted gives me a lot of peace of mind. It just works smoothly, and I haven't looked back since.

Absolute and total ignorance dealing…

Absolute and total ignorance dealing with these imbeciles for my mother. I got her one of their free encrypted email address years ago to keep her social security and other personal business private. I should have taken the hint back when I emailed them about how to block unwanted emails and they acted like I was speaking a foreign language (technically I am I suppose since the communication is no doubt with a stupid overseas call center).

She tried Lumo AI and decided she didn't care for it, tried to delete her data/conversations, and they ended up deleting her entire proton acount.
It says "Account scheduled for deletion, please contact customer service". So she did, and they answered two days later and have asked her for everything but a vial of blood and a first born child to get it back. They answer once per day, and have kept her going for almost a week with the stupidest questions ever, some very personal, like banking information.

There is literaly no reason for this. It was a mistake - mainly on their part for their products being unnecesarily complicated. My mother has her name and password, plus the code they gave her initially in case she got locked out. That should be enough.
The "we're sorry but please be patient" schtick has run its course.

The fact that they have a 2 star rating and still try to reply to every unsatisfied customer with the same bulls##t excuses for their poor customer service speaks volumes. We will both use another product regardless of whether they fix the issue or not.

I was happy for the first two years, until out of the blue people stated they could no longer email me. Only to find out, they decided to start charging for any normal amount of space & yes I do mean normal. So I pay an extremely high-price one a year, and i figured other things like their VPN or any other feature they offer would come with the $70 i pay, being that they claim to be about safety & care about their clients safety but no, nothing comes with it. Just storage i don't even need at a ridiculous price! Also if you forget your password, you lose everything! ** update, my plan covers storage for $69 dollars?? Which i never paid before & unless something else can or will be added to that price, I have to decide. Im a victim of DV but also cannot afford to pay for email**

Hi, thanks for sharing your feedback.

Free accounts have limited storage, and if the mailbox becomes full, new emails can’t be received until space is cleared or the plan is upgraded.

Paid plans include different features depending on the subscription, while bundles like Proton Unlimited include services such as VPN, Drive, Pass, and more. You can always cancel your subscription by logging in to your account at https://account.proton.me/ → "Settings" → "All settings" → "Subscription" → "Cancel subscription". Cotnact us at https://proton.me/support/contact if you need help.

Regarding passwords, because Proton uses end-to-end encryption, only you can decrypt your data. This means that if your password and recovery methods are lost, Proton cannot restore access to encrypted content. We strongly recommend setting up recovery options to avoid this situation.

Misleading advertising.

Checked their pricing page and clicked on Drive to see how much space they provide on free accounts. It clearly says 5 GB. After I created the account, I checked in Drive and saw that they only provide 2 GB.

If there's anything I hate, it's misleading advertising. What else are you not being truthful about? Now, I don't trust you. I have the screenshot, so even if they change it, I still have proof.

Was excited because you're in Europe. What a shame, even more so because the negative reviews outweigh the positive. That's a strong sign!

Files deleted.

I thought this was good ... I was terribly wrong.

Their customer support is the absolute worst. I bought an extra user, did not work as intended. THen I asked for a refund and now they've been putting me on tasks for 2 weeks and no refund. It's unbeliveable stupid.

Also they market their high tier subscriptions as you get Proton VPN, but you don't. You can download the free version, just as everyone else. Fake marketing.

Disappointing Refund Experience – 30‑Day Policy Not Honored

I signed up for Proton Mail with the understanding that they offer a 30‑day money‑back guarantee. I requested a refund within that 30‑day period, clearly meeting the stated requirement.
Despite this, my refund was denied, with no satisfactory explanation that justified why the guarantee was not honored. This was extremely frustrating, especially for a service that positions itself as transparent and user‑focused.
While the product itself may offer strong privacy features, the customer support and billing experience do not match that image. A refund policy should be respected exactly as written — otherwise it feels misleading.
I would advise potential customers to be very cautious and not rely on the 30‑day refund promise when making a purchase decision.

Could access my account which i have for 10 years due to a new cellphone and use 2fa to login. With the new cellphone i couldn't link the codegenerator to my account again.

I start mailing them and as far as i could i answered securityquestions. Than it was quiet for a week, no response at all and i contacted them on twitter and they let me know that if i sentreaction back to them before i got an answer i could expect delay. (Now u see how subtle dominant they are).

An new guy contacted me and asked other securityquestions which i answered again and now they say: sorry but we can't give u access! So for me it's clear, never again with this Swiss company. Punishing people for faults they can't do anythong about it!!!!!

Proton's dark patterns when cancelling a subscription

Up until 2 weeks ago, I ran an MSP/consultancy. I used Proton for Business with the Mail Professional subscription. It worked pretty well (although it lacked a lot of features). But recently I had to close down due to health issues and therefore had to cancel my subscription. I couldn't, because I had an "unpaid" invoice issued the very same day. I couldn't cancel it or remove my payment because the invoice wasn't paid, and just now today, I checked my bank only to find a 36.96 € charge. That is a dark behavioral pattern. From a company obsessed with privacy and freedom. I won't ever recommend Proton to anyone needing something for their business for (hopefully) obvious reasons. I would never EVER relay something like that on to a client.

Ex gmail user

After being a gmail user since beta (I had over 75,000 emails on gmail) Proton mail was a breath of fresh air. The transition was seamless - they provide an option to automatically transfer all your emails from other providers, it took less than half an hour to transfer roughly 20 years of gmail to Protonmail.

I can't recommend this service highly enough. I use their paid 'all in one' package which also provides calendar, VPN, and an encrypted online drive. 500GB is nothing to sneeze at. Well worth every penny.
