Beware, horrible customer service.

I have a band, and we just recorded a new album. I set up a Proton Mail account just to use for the distribution company. Before giving this new email address to the distribution company, I checked to make sure that I could log into the email account. Everything seemed fine, so I gave this email address when I paid a year up front to the distribution company. As I stated, I made sure the email address worked because that is the one thing you cannot change with the distribution company. I uploaded the new album to the distribution company and was informed by them that I needed to validate my email address and that they sent the validation information to this Proton Mail address. Lo and behold, I was unable to log into the Proton email that I logged into just the day before. I contacted Proton customer service and explained the situation. Since then, I've been in a back-and-forth battle with their customer service and still am unable to log in. It's been three weeks; our new album is still not released. This should have been an easy fix, but instead, they want me to jump through a bunch of hoops, which doesn't work anyway. Terrible customer service. They take days to even get back to you, and then they don't answer any of your questions or help you log in. Now, I have to cancel our account with the distribution company and set up a new account and pay another year in advance for the new account. I always try to help out smaller companies, but this time, it was an obvious mistake. I should have just set up a new Google email address, and none of this would have happened. Do not use Proton for anything important! The only thing that I am grateful for is that I haven't paid them any money yet. Nothing I hate worse than to pay for incompetence, and their customer service is one of the most incompetent I have ever dealt with, and that's saying a lot.

Unacceptably poor customer support

I submitted a query about opening my account and after 36 hours am still waiting for a response. This is not acceptable.

Proton: Ticket no. 5035111

Update: Now 48 hours without a response. It appears that Proton Mail prefer to attend to their Trustpilot reviews than to their customers' queries. Avoid this company.

Second update: Finally, after 55 hours, Proton Mail responded (satisfactorily) to my query and I have upgraded my rating to two stars.

Unsecure proton mail, beware...

I chose to setup a free account with Proton mail a while ago, as I wanted to keep an alternative to Gmail. Proton mail likes to impress, talks the talk about all of its market leadership on privacy.
Privacy is big at Proton mail. Privacy is important at Proton mail. Yet only a couple of weeks ago, I found an *email* in my proton inbox Missing? Somebody had simply got in and deleted it!
This was private to me, a sort of note to self. I had enough storage and was nowhere near the limits of how many emails I can send etc. "My" email had a link I kept to a YouTube vid.....why would anyone have a Neeeeeed to hack into my account and delete this? It was no one's business but mine... .
Someone wanted to prevent me accessing my own email. I had to reset this 1 up, and send the same email again, to other providers such as mail.com, outlook etc with that 'link'.... Anything digital and online is hackable (isn't that right meta WhatsApp!)
Thanks Proton. Proton mail, your not as professional as you make out to be.

I signed up about a year ago, with regrets

I signed up about a year ago because I needed a service that blocked spam and fluff mail from a football pool provider. For year 1 it was well. Stopped using after the football season ended.
Now, I receive TWO attempted charges on my business card (rideshare) for a heavily inflated amount from 2025.
The fact that a user cannot leave via the app is ponderous.
I have reached out to the developers and said "hey, the price jump for something I use only for a few months..." an increase just isn't worth it.
I do not remember my log-on credentials but left a username, address, last 4 digits of card etc. Tonight I have submitted my second ticket and simply wish to part on good terms. It's impossible, and support does not reply at all (at least the first 24 hours). Oh and I was attempted to be charged BEFORE year two was to start - now TWICE!! I just want OUT!

Does what it is suppose to

Overall Proton Mail delivers what I expect for an e-mail service.

- Can I view e-mails? Yes
- Can I send e-mails? Yes
- Can I organise e-mails? Yes
- Do Proton Mail have a native Desktop client? Yes
- Does support react to my tickets and questions? Yes

Is Proton Mail perfect? No.
- Proton Mail automatically downgraded my account and cleared all my client settings when I missed a payment. This was super annoying as the last time it happened it had nothing to do with me. Yet Proton disabled my accounts premium features, my addresses and cleared my settings.

Proton should give a grace period for payment related issues of 30 days, as it is a serious thing that they IMMEDIATELY disabled much of my account and all my paid features, for an error I had no control over.

- Proton sends notifications when my membership is renewed, they for example write 'we have charged you X EUR' but if payment fails they AFTERWARDS write 'Payment failed' in a separate notification, which makes no sense to me. As what they say boils down to 'you're subscription is renewed, but payment failed.' And this is confusing.

Besides the above "complaints" I have not experienced anything negative to comment on after a bit over a year of use. And in the world we live in today, I think it is important to have an e-mail provider that is not only secure but also actively privacy focused.

Best regards

PROTONMAIL HAS ISSUES

PROTONMAIL HAS ISSUES. it was nice I was all happy to find out about an easy and free website that gives a free email, cool right? BUT about 5 days ago it just said "Account scheduled for deletion, if you did not request it, please contact customer service" WTF?!?!?!?!? I NEVER REQUESTED THIS AND I KNOW WITH 100% OF MY HEART AND SOUL THAT NOBODY CAME IN TO HACK MY ACCOUNT BUT THE THING IS IS THAT MY ACCOUNT HAS REALLY IMPORTANT STUFF ON IT THAT IF I LOSE THIS EMAIL I LOSE IT ALL. So naturally I go to support, i tell them about this issue and I've given them more than 5 tickets to help me and A LIL OVER 10 BUSINESS DAYS HAS GONE BY AND STILL NOTHING. I'VE GOTTEN 3 RESPONSES 2 OF THEM WERE COPY PASTE AND THE OTHER ONE WAS JUST TALKING ABOUT LUMO. I WANT MY ACCOUNT AND ANSWERS IMMEDIATELY.

I don't know why Proton gets such bad reviews.

Their support is top notch, all but the VPN is GREAT! Mail, drive, and the calendar are 10 Stars!

The VPN is very "SLOW" on a 500mb bandwidth! Loading up any links takes 1-2min to load. Turn VPN off and all my bandwidth is back!

But for ALL the other apps is Great.
Their support is top notch in my case anyway!

I'd give them 10 stars!! Not 5!

From Privacy Pioneer to Just Another Subscription Service

I’ve been a Proton customer since 2022, and in the beginning I was a huge fan. They felt genuinely different from every other tech company. Privacy came first, they valued loyal customers, and it felt like they were building something for the long term rather than chasing short-term profits.

Unfortunately, that no longer seems to be the case.

Like so many other subscription services, Proton now appears to focus on attracting new customers with heavily discounted introductory offers, only to charge existing customers almost double when it comes time to renew. It’s disappointing because loyalty seems to count for very little.

When I raised my concerns with customer support, I was met with generic, robotic responses that simply pointed to the terms and conditions rather than making any effort to help. The experience felt impersonal and left me feeling like just another account number.

Proton still makes excellent products, and I still believe in their mission. But the way they now treat long-term customers feels no different from the big tech companies they once stood apart from. I genuinely hoped they would be different.

I tried to send a email to proton support and I got invalid recipient! It had the correct support proton email in the send to area. Problem #1. My emails are unreadable the message when I open it only letters and numbers. I tried to download the suite and I couldn’t because I forgot my apple password. I never got a box to confirm or ok this subscription. I would never paid $191 dollars but I did not get a box to confirm. Refund my money and fix my email and then I’m done with proton. I won’t use the suite

Good service. Good UI, it sends emails and also receives them.

My only criticism is the somewhat aggressive marketing, false claims, and constantly putting services you aren't interested in in front of you.

Proton Mail is a good email service for everyday use. The interface is simple, registration is clear, and everything feels more private than with many regular mail services. I like that the free version is enough for basic email needs, especially if you just need a reliable mailbox for personal use.

Everything is quite easy to understand in Proton Mail, even if you are using it for the first time. I also like that you can choose the design color, because it makes the interface feel more comfortable and a bit more personal. For me, Proton Mail is a solid option if you want a simple and more secure email service.

Waste of time

1. First of all it's expensive.
2. There is a nag pop-up screen with thier plans everytime I go in settings. Why? I already have a plan..
3. I can easily create an extra email alias (from the included 15 in my plan) but good luck in deleting one.
4. No refund for me they said.
5. Plenty of times, I am not recieving some automated emails - those with login codes from other services - such as bitwarden for example.
I still have one year of premium but I will migrate in a few days, that's how tired I am of their "fancy" service.
I even used them for my bussiness, always a pro costumer. Not anymore.

Goodbye Proton. You will not be missed.

A disappointing product.

I really want to rate Proton higher but I simply can't. I've been a free user for many years, but with big tech's move to Ai scraping of personal data, I'm moving off Meta, Google, Microsoft etc. So I bought a paid plan for Proton for better privacy.

Email is pretty solid, but everything else feels like it's in beta; Drive is buggy and I'm consistently left with corrupted, unopenable files - I can't trust it to be my cloud backup, which kinda defeats the purpose. Moreover, the 15gb of combined storage across all apps on a paid plan is measly, I get 30 gb for free with Mega. The document editing apps are absolutely terrible - unusable - too many bugs to even begin listing.

Proton Meet only syncs one of your email/calendar accounts, so if you're hosting your business and personal emails with Proton you can only choose one to sync with the meet app. But that's a moot point because the meet app is buggy as well; wouldn't connect audio with Bluetooth and without headphones connected the loudspeaker was at minimal and unusable volume - I had to switch back to zoom.

Proton, instead of trying to release half a dozen beta apps, try and perfect one or two first. Or make your beta apps completely free, so your subscribers aren't paying to test your products for you.

Worst of all, the customer service is poor. One takes the time to report a bug, explaining in simple, comprehensive steps what happened. Only to receive the predictable response: we couldn't recreate the issue, can you explain the exact steps that you made? Like, I literally just did that!

Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Proton as a serious solution, they are using the philosophy of "build the plane while flying", and the result is risk to stored data and constantly frustrated clients. The ratings in trustpilot tells the accurate story.

Trying things out

I've had a free account for a while just to try things out and I decided to get email plus and connect a custom domain that seems to work now after some DNS trial and error towards WIX.

If all goes well after my one month test is over I might get a full year for my company email as it's about half the price Google Workspace would be. I don't need a lot of the features the competitors might offer, just the ability to email with a custom domain.

Poor support experience after paying for Proton Duo

I paid for Proton Duo, which is a lot of money for me, and I originally liked the platform, especially the privacy focus and clean design. However, my experience became very frustrating when I tried to forward or export a full conversation and found that the platform does not properly support this in the way I needed.

I contacted support, but the process was not helpful for me. I also requested a refund after limited usage, but the refund was refused and I was repeatedly asked for more proof. This took too much time and became overwhelming.

I have since cancelled my renewal and moved my account back to the free plan. I may close or stop using the platform fully. Proton has good features, but the customer support experience, refund handling, and limitation with forwarding/exporting full conversations were disappointing, especially after paying for Proton Duo.
I hope Proton improves full conversation export/forwarding options and makes refund/support communication clearer and easier for customers.
