subscription system

The idea is great, teachers are good, but the implementation has way too many flaws. The worst part is the subscription system - they charged me twice instead of once, then cancelled my subscription. Because of this I had to waste time on support chat, re-plan all my lessons, and on top of that I paid my bank's currency conversion fees for both transactions (one correct, one erroneous). When they refunded the wrong charge, I got hit again with a conversion fee from USD back to my currency. So I lost money twice on bank fees alone - all because of their bug. Losing time, money and mental energy over something so basic is unacceptable.

I'm not a fan of the subscription…

I'm not a fan of the subscription system. Not just on this platform but in general. I prefer to buy my lessons a few at a time once I know my work schedule. If you are like me, then avoid the subscription feature. Otherwise, Preply has been a huge help so far. The customer service was very helpful also

The platform blocks students from leaving negative reviews

I started with a tutor who disappeared with no explanation after a lesson (we had four booked and had completed two). As far as I was concerned the lessons were going great and I purchased a book at her suggestion. After lesson 2 she disappeared and I wasn't able to contact her on the app.

The first issue was that there was no accountability or explanation, even after I purchased a book and paid in advance for lessons. The second, more disturbing issue is that the platform wouldn't allow me to leave a review for the tutor - they obviously knew the review would not be positive and they said that since the tutor stopped the lessons I was no longer able to leave a review.

So for anyone searching for a tutor on Preply, please be aware that the reviews you see are biased as the platform only allows positive reviews and blocks students from leaving negative reviews.

Supportive and helpful
