phpList feels incredibly outdated. The interface looks like a relic from the late 1990s that’s been awkwardly forced into the modern web. It’s visually unappealing, cluttered, and lacks any meaningful design polish.
On top of that, customization options are extremely limited, making it frustrating to work with if you want anything beyond the most basic setup.
Frankly, unless you have very specific needs and a high tolerance for ugly, legacy software, it’s not worth the time or effort. You’d be better off building your own solution or choosing a more modern alternative.

Update 3-13-26: I was hoping to post an improved review unfortunately this will not be the case. After working with Mariana to change the IP address and get PhPList emails accepted by Gmail, Hotmail and a few others again, I upgraded my account with the intent of rebuilding the relationship. The email from Mariana on March 7, 2026 left things on a positive note. That is until I tried sending a planned campaign. Even though I paid for an upgrade, the system did not update and it won't let me send out.
It is now March 13, 2026, and I have yet to hear from anyone about fixing this. I have sent several emails trying to get a response. STILL NOTHING TO DATE.
I am not a fan of posting reviews but the last time I got a response after none for months was after I posted my original email on Feb. 1. I am hoping for someone from PhPlist reads this and responds right away. It's too bad this is not positive but I have not other choice. I'm trying to be nice and and understanding but I just want the service I paid for send out an important campaign after months of dealing with problems.
Posted 2/1/26:Customer for 2 years. Suddenly quality of service greatly diminished no change after upgrade. No response from customer support. No response addressing issue since Nov 2025. Direct email delivery failures. Increase bounces due to low reputation. Gmail no longer accepting any emails from IP number "due to the very low reputation of the sending IP" . Caution taking subscription.

Account suspended for 3th time due to DNS issues which aren't there. 14-day's no response from support. We pay a lot of money for no service.
This is not a professional approach !!

They send out fraudulent mails intented to mimic real entities like you energy provider with the sole purpose of stealing you money.

These people hold illegally procured email databases for spammers.

SCAMMM COMPANY.
Emails do not deliver. Gmail is blocked. They take advance payments and do not refund.

Total SCAM!!

They will let you send for 3-4 days then block sending and will not refund your Quarterly advance payments.

This company is a complete SCAM. They take advance quarterly payments and then don't refund when you stop service.
Stay away from them.

150USD I have paid, but I do not recall to have clicked that. When asking about it, I get a dummy reply.

Scam: nearly all their emails are blocked. They take your money and then blame you for not having "quality" campaigns. Yahoo, Microsoft all block EVERY IP Phplist has.

Furthermore, their CEO is complicit in this fraud as he refuses to provide refunds.

We find phpList the best Open Source alternative to MailChimp. For first time users it takes a bit to get used to UI but with some practice it will be quite easy to start sending your newsletters while using a vast amount of features.

Best email marketing campaign software if you have a large subscriber database. It is for the more technical savvy user, but with unlimited customization options. Excellent support, as well as third party plugins to extend functionality.

Works very well as an open-source and self hosted alternative to MailChimp and other Newsletter platforms.

Using PHPLIST for more than 10 years now... It is our "best friend" when it comes to mass emailing. KEEP IT UP GUYS!!

Getting bulk email where it needs to go is a priority for every business. phpList has been our faithfull silent partner in achieving this for many years. Long may it continue.

Easy to use, self hosted batch email program. I use it for newsletters. I use my webshop subscribe/unsubscribe system, and export/import the data everytime. (It is confusing if I use 2 systems simultaneously)
Works as a breeze. Whenever I run into difficulty, the online community is always quick to respond and helpfull. Defenitely worth the 5 stars, keep up the good work!

Email service provider is normal delivery provider but the service of customer support is not quite appreciable as they are very slow and don't understand the situations.
