We were sold a one gallon fish tank for…

We were sold a one gallon fish tank for our 8 year old. Our fish died after a few days. We have since purchased numerous fish for the tank and all have died. We went to another pet store who advised that our little tank is too small to sustain fish life. If we had known this we most certainly would have purchased a larger tank. When I called the store I was told there was nothing they could do and would not provide a full credit towards a larger tank. They said they would speak to manager though and call me back. They never called me back. I called today again and they said there is nothing they can do. I asked why they did not mention the fact that our tank is not suitable for fish particularly for beginners. The lady said they are trained to sell all fish tank sizes. Seriously shady to sell us a tank with 3 fish when you know that the fish won't survive. I guess you are counting on us to return every couple of weeks to buy more fish. The manager at Port Coquitlam office calls me and says Petland corporate will not allow full credit on tank and offered me $5 off next tank. No thanks. I will be buying a new tank from another pet store.

Extremely disappointed!

We are extremely disappointed with our recent experience at the Kamloops Petland Notre store.

We purchased two large bags of cat food and one of the bags (unopened) expired 12 days after our purchase. We were not informed of the imminent expiration, and it appears this bag was sold at full price (less the anniversary discount which was on all products/foods) despite being nearly expired.
Furthermore, when my cat experienced persistent vomiting after consuming this food, today, we attempted to exchange it. However, we were denied an exchange due to a strict return policy. We are 10 days past that timeline, despite the food potentially causing my cat's health issues.

This experience has severely damaged our trust in this store. We have been loyal customers for over 20 years, but this unacceptable service has lost our business.

The replacement fish I bought from the competition is fantastic

I bought a fish from the limited supply on hand at Petland. I thought that it might perk up a bit once it was in my tank. It does the next day.
I've kept, bred and sold hundreds of fish since I was in elementary school in the 1960's. I sold some feeder goldfish to Petland and two other pet stores in Grande Prairie. I'm no novice. My catfish lay eggs a number of times a year.
I froze the body and returned to the store with the dead fish and my receipt. It was only then that I was told that I would provide a water sample. This is news to me,, there is no expressed procedure for returning dead product. Reddit was more forthcoming than the companies website and the staff that I spoke to.
It's a forty minute trip into the city, both to buy the sick fish and then to return the dead fish. I've spent more on gas than I did on the fish.
The replacement that I bought is vigorous and looks like life is good.

One would hope we can trust a pet…

One would hope we can trust a pet store? Does deceitful marketing violate our trust? I started taking advantage of Seniors Day, last Thursday of every month, in Sept. The promotion - 20% off "regular priced items", but must be 60 and a Clubpet member, which means give a phone number to the cashier. I thought all along that the "regular" price was the "clubpet" price, the prominent one on the shelf pricing - big, bold, and black! BUT, I am advised, the price, in small type, in the top left corner of the shelf price is actually the regular price, or sometimes known by staff as the "original price". I ask when was it the original, and am told by staff "don't know". So, if you're like me and finally try to reconcile your register receipt after forgetting for 2 months, and you can't, it's because the 20% is discounted from the wee, little "regular" price in the top left corner. Not the regular one you usually pay - the CLUBPET price. Discounting their "regular" price may save you a few cents, depending on product, compared to the competition where I often shop.
If the 20% discount came off the CLUBPET price it would make my trip to Petland worthwhile. Since it does not, and now that I know how they are manipulating prices, I won't be taking note of Seniors Day. Probably not going there at all because their prices are on the high side. I started shopping on this Seniors Day because prices have increased significantly over the past 2 years at pet stores. My complaint calls to Calgary head office and to the Canadian HO in Winnipeg went unanswered. Note that the staff do not appear to support this unethical practice, which has gone on for apparently years, even since first established. They get away with this because the almost inconspicuous price in the top left corner is their "regular" price. So when you see a sale price tag any day on the shelf, the discount is applied to their "regular" price, not "your" regular price. Got it?

Above and beyond for a bird!

I just finished leaving a bad review for one company, now I figured I'd leave a well-deserved good one for another to balance out the old karma. A couple of weeks ago, one of our budgies fell ill, and my poor daughter was devastated. We went into our local Surrey Petland and asked for advice. Taylor, the lady in charge of small animals, told us to get the little bird to a vet ASAP, gave us a list of local vets who dealt with birds, and lent us a small cage for transport. Turns out, the poor thing was dead when we got home (the bird, not Taylor), but we were left very impressed with this employee's compassion and customer care. Thanks to her, we're now doing all our pet shopping at Petland. Look at what one employee who cares can do for a company!
