On April 13th,2025, Optimum Van lines hired a subcontractor to move my family from Virginia to Texas. The contract I had with them was not similar to the one the subcontractor made me sign after they had my stuff in a warehouse. The movers that were hired were drunk, they damaged our items (3 bed frames, a shelf went missing, and my BowFlex M9 MaxTrainer). They left the house a mess, when they literally just dumped stuff off shelves. It took days to clean up after they left our house. They also brought trucks that were larger than what was agreed upon (I agreed to 2500 sq ft and they showed up with either 2700 or 2750 sq ft trucks), and did not tell me until after they had taken half of my stuff to an offsite facility and the rest was left on my front lawn. They then charged me an extra $5000 for these trucks (due to their larger size). After this, we were explicit when we told them what items should be packed first. The items that were supposed to be moved (a stand up freezer, crib, furniture) never made it on to the truck. They charged us another chunk of money to get a few more items on the truck (I believe $2500). Initially, we were told that our stuff would make it to Texas in 3 days, then it went to 5 business days, and finally, we received our stuff 13 days after we left Virginia. There was no communication about our items. We were often charged service/finance charges when using a credit card; and often asked to pay in cash. Every contract was different, but we had to sign them in order to get our items moved and we had to sign a different contract to receive our items. When it was documented (by the different company moving our stuff into our new place in Texas) that three bed frames were broken and that the BowFlex was not functioning, we were offered less than $90 to replace these items. It literally was one of the worst experiences in my life. My husband and I felt so hollow after seeing the movers destroy my life, home, and property.

We would like to clarify a few details regarding your move from Virginia to Texas. The initial inventory you provided to us listed 8 items (83 pieces). However, three days prior to your scheduled move, you provided an updated inventory that included 47 items (382 pieces). This significant increase in volume required additional truck space and an extra crew at the last minute—during one of the busiest times of the year. The additional truck size and crew were necessary to accommodate the new inventory and ensure your move could still be completed on schedule.
Your move covered over 1,000 miles, and long-distance deliveries typically take 10–14 business days. Your delivery was completed within this standard time frame.
At no point were any of our movers under the influence of alcohol or behaving inappropriately. Our team takes such allegations very seriously and maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy for unprofessional conduct.
We have maintained consistent communication with you throughout the process, assisting with updates, claims with the motor carrier, and follow-ups. We also contacted BowFlex directly to help determine a repair or replacement cost for your equipment; unfortunately, that product is no longer covered under their service program.
We understand that damages occurred, and we sincerely regret any inconvenience this caused. We have made multiple attempts to reach you to discuss a refund and other possible resolutions, and we remain fully committed to finding a fair and satisfactory outcome.

They Made It Right

Moving is always a taxing process, both on you and your wallet. When the carrier that Optimum contracted treated me poorly, Optimum refunded my deposit for the move, even though they were not at fault for issues I was experiencing. Not only that, but the manner in which they presented the resolution was timely, fair, and kind.

Optimum Van Lines truly delivered on their promise of a hassle-free move. From the initial consultation to delivery day, everything was handled with professionalism. They provided a detailed breakdown of costs upfront, so there were no surprises. The movers treated my belongings with great care, especially my antique furniture, which arrived in perfect condition. I felt completely at ease throughout the process.

Don’t do it. If it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

This company’s broker model means that they can make you lots of promises and blame the third party movers they contract with when things go wrong down the line. My sales rep gave me his direct line, took down a detailed estimate, showed me the lack of federal agency complaints, and assured me the estimate would be accurate. Not only did I not know when the movers would actually show up more than two days before they did, but they added elevator fees and other charges that I had spoke in detail to the sales representative about. I never heard from the sales rep again. They reported an incorrect deposit to one of the moving companies and didn’t bother to correct it, so if I hadn’t kept documents and done my diligence I would have been charged hundreds of dollars extra. The customer service person I spoke to just told me they wouldn’t make a profit if they correctly reported my deposit. Overall this operation read like a scam. They contract out to moving companies with terrible reviews who treat your belongings like crap. And everything is carefully structured so they can avoid liability and accountability for the bad work they do. Please avoid it.

On the day of your move, the only additional charges applied were for packing materials. Since your items had been in storage for months, many boxes were open, bins had no lids, and clothing along with other loose items required repacking to ensure they could be transported safely. This is standard practice across the moving industry and helps protect your belongings in transit.

You mentioned in your review that “the broker model means you won’t have a set schedule until 48 hours prior.” In reality, this is how scheduling works for nearly all interstate moving companies. During peak season, exact dates and times can shift due to factors outside anyone’s control (such as delays, traffic, or mechanical issues). This is not unique to our company, and we always work to provide as much notice and accuracy as possible.

Regarding the elevator fee, that charge is a legitimate line item in the carrier’s tariff. However, in your case, the driver went ahead and refunded you for it. Additionally, over 60% of your deposit was returned, with the remainder going directly to the motor carrier to help offset your packing charges.

It’s important to note that you were not “extorted” out of money—this was simply the cost of additional services required to complete your move safely. Words like “scam” or “sham” don’t reflect the reality of your move or the industry standards we operate under.

Finally, for perspective, your two moves were completed at highly competitive rates: $1,225 from Tampa, FL to Washington, DC, and under $1,700 from Indiana to Washington, DC. Those rates are very difficult to find in today’s market.

We also reached out to you directly to discuss your concerns and explore ways to improve your experience, but you declined. While we respect your position, we stand by the fairness of how your move was handled and the value provided.
