Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Considering 155 reviews, most reviewers were unhappy with their experience overall. Many people found the advertised low rates deceptive, as they were often compelled to purchase expensive, mandatory insurance and toll passes, leading to significantly higher final costs. Customers frequently encountered unhelpful virtual staff, rude employees, and long wait times, contributing to a frustrating service experience. The locations were often misleadingly advertised as airport-based but were offsite, requiring unreliable shuttles and causing inconvenience, especially late at night. Reviewers also reported difficulties with payment, including large deposits held for extended periods and unexpected charges appearing on credit cards weeks after the rental. Many were forced to pay for the company's insurance because their own standard insurance cards or credit card coverage were deemed insufficient or not accepted. Additionally, some people received vehicles in poor condition or experienced breakdowns, leaving them stranded.

Accusing me of being a thief and charging my credit card with absolutely no communication an additional 170 euros for a GPS.
This, despite me sharing copies of text messages between me and the local rental office of the navigation and CarPlay issues I was having during the rental. Other secondary items include th car having over 50,000 km’s, no spare tire, multiple exterior body issues including a 6”-7” dent.

Careful with your deposit

Careful when renting from here. I have been waiting for months for them to return my deposit. I've been calling and emailing 2-3x a month with them regarding my deposit return and it just keeps pushing to the next person. No one knows anything. It is a SCAM and they are THIEVES. Still waiting for the response.

Beware of hidden fees and tricky insurance rules!

NextCar advertises very low daily rates (like $20/day), but the actual price can be much higher due to extra charges and insurance restrictions.

I prepaid $50 for my reservation. When my flight was delayed and I arrived just over an hour late, they demanded another $50 to reinstate my booking and forced me to buy their insurance for $50/day.

They claim to accept third-party insurance, but only from a very short and expensive list. Popular and affordable online insurances are not accepted—this is hidden in their fine print. So in reality, you’re forced to buy their overpriced insurance.

My “$20/day” rental suddenly became $120/day ($20 rental + $50 required insurance + $50 reinstatement). Of course, I refused to rent at that price.

Because I declined these surprise charges and canceled, they kept my $50 prepayment—company policy is to keep your money if you refuse their conditions.

Other rental companies are more transparent and flexible. Here, you risk losing your money if you don’t agree to all the extra fees.

Bottom line:
NextCar’s low prices are just bait. Read all the terms carefully, or you’ll end up overpaying. I do not recommend this company.

Terrible experience

Terrible experience. Their driving license reader cannot read international driving license, and the employees are simply incompetent to read the details on it. I rented just a few weeks before, in the same location with sixt and Alamo without issues. I ended up with my rental being refused despite it was fully payed I was refused the refund. The bigger problem is that it was rented via economybookings.com and they also refuse to refund me because NextCar reported the booking as if I didnt show up. Watch out for these SCAMMERS! Most 5 stars reviews are paid fake reviews.

Over 2 hrs to rent my car which I already paid for through Expedia.... Needed a declaration page from my insurance company for proof of insurance. I was not told in advance about this. Several other customers were also not notified so we were all on or phones with insurance companies to find what the reqired..... I have never been asked for this before in all the years I have rented cars. Proof of insurance was not enough. The lady, she said her name was (Stephanie), who helped me was just plain not a good representative for your company. The person waiting in line next to me said she flipped me off when I turned to make a call to the insurance company. SO CLASSY!!! Since we had waited so long for the rental, we (the other customers, all of us not happy with the situation, all agreed we would have cancelled if we could have got a refund....) had formed a bond and that's why I was told what had happened. Everyone was afraid to complain before we got their car because of the potential retaliation of what they could do after renting the vehicle. But we all agreed we would never do business here again..... Houston Texas.... After reading reviews i am concerned i wont see my deposit back.....

I'm giving them one star because the website demands it. They don't deserve anything. After many years, we returned to Puerto Rico to visit family and found an excellent price for a car rental, but it was worthless. This company is a bunch of thieves. They stole $307.06 from us. They steal from their customers. We rented with them over four months ago, and they have never returned the money. Even after several calls and complaints, we have never received a response from them. From the beginning, they demonstrated the worst customer service since we arrived at the rental office. The employees' attitude and ineptitude were bad, their manner of responding to customers was poor, and they were disorganized. THEY ARE THIEVES.

Beware!!!!!!

Beware!!!!!!! NEVER rent from this company. You are taking safety risks!!!!!! NextCar is the worst of the worst. they are located far away from the airport unlike the website that states they are in the terminal. and the ride is scary as it is dark and isolated especially if you are not from Morocco. The guy who came to pick us at the terminal was wearing sweats, flip flops and a hoody, think of the safety concerns that went through our minds!!!! Their staff is untrained and barely speaks any other lamguage. Their manager Belyaich is uneducated, unprofessionsl, rude, and disrespectful. Their representation on the net is untruthful and blatantly wrong to induce customers into error. They canceled our reservation unilaterally after we arrived to their office and we had to go look for another rental car after midnight. This is not a reflection on Morocco but this lousy disastrous company.
Hoping that they will go bankrupt soon and rid the world of travelers of their scams and extremely poor service! YOU have been warned please stay away!!

TERRIBLE RENTAL CHOICES

First time flying to PR, and had booked a rental, at a discounted rate as was stated online, only to find out the prices don't match anywhere the price stated in NEXTCAR Rental facility in Carolina, PR location. The price went from $290+ initially quoted online, to a whopping $730+ inside the NEXTCAR facility, so you can imagine the confusion and frustration, where the price hike even came from. I had a more than decent discussion with the lady rep, but of course, she stated "this is the price, and it is firm, no changes are to be made". Upon receiving the first rental minivan "Kia Carnaval", the representative assured us the car was cleaned in and out, through and through, where it only took me few miles down the road to see where all the roaches were hiding in plain sight all over the car. The live roaches were under the seats, in the center compartment, on the dash, and pretty much everywhere in the car, in every nook and cranny. I was extremely furios and disgusted, as I recall precisely asking if the car was clean inside, no stains or pests, and the representative verbally stated "yes, the car is clean clean". The cars all had scratches, dents, scuffs, dings, window chips, steering bent with the wheel all cocked to one side, and so much more, I can barely list, as the condition that some cars were in, was really bad. It seemed like they do not get serviced much. I had called NEXTCAR to swap us into another car that same night, and we were made aware they would accomodate us, which they did to some extent, where we eventually had to swap cars at least 3 times during the stay in PR, given we had more than a group of 6 people traveling. After our trip elapsed, and had to fly back home, I was informed that the refund due would be sent back to me somewhere around the 5-14 business days. I wait, wait and do some more waiting, and at this point more than a few months have passed since the rental car was returned, and I have NOT RECEIVED ANY REFUND as stated "REFUND DUE" on my NEXTCAR RENTAL agreement. I have e-mailed the customer care team and was forwarded to a Call Center Team Leader, where it seems I only have been given false hope and some runaround. It has been almost 3 months, since the rental was returned, and MY REFUND is still not in my bank account. I am not going to give up, and be persistent until the refund is due. This is beyond bad practices on this Rental Car Company's behalf, as my first time in PR, definitely WILL NEVER EVER RENT A CAR from any NEXTCAR RENTAL. The lack of care, utter disrespect for someones time, money proves to show what this rental company is about. Save yourself all the unnecessary stress, time and braincells, and utilize another car rental company, as it would sure suit all of us better.

Avoid using this business

Avoid using this business. There are so many better options elsewhere that won't wrack your brain or ruin your trip.

There's a reason why they had to change business names so many times, and it's because they try to avoid all the shame and reputation of being such a garbage company. They're also known as NextCar, AMPM Car Rentals, Priceless, and some scratched out logo I can't recognize in their office.

The staff was incredibly rude and sexist. The agent told me, "I didn't add your wife as a driver because women don't usually drive. It's hard here in LA." Are you kidding me?

The whole process is entirely a joke, riddled with hidden fees everywhere. Like they actually charge you for every mile over 10/day. FOR REAL?

Actually getting the car is a whole hassle and process in and of itself. You need to bring or print your insurance, and then the agent literally just takes snapshots of it and your ID with their personal phones. Good luck keeping privacy... who knows what the hell they're doing with this personal information.

This is a terrible company, and they don't deserve your business. Avoid. And if you *did* use them, make sure to freeze your credit. Don't trust these people at all.

Read This BEFORE Making a Reservation

My favorite thing about them is their pushy sales tactics. No wait, it’s their bad customer service. Oh, no, wait… it was when they gave my reservation away and I was stuck at the airport trying to figure out how to transport 24 students to their school sponsored event. I would give them negative stats if I could.

Horrible deceitful place

Horrible deceitful place! We booked on Priceline, paid in full for both the rental AND the MX car insurance. They weren’t there when we arrived at the airport then when finally arriving they tried telling me they need a $600 deposit on my credit card and I am Required to buy more insurance from them for an additional $606 in order to get the car! They claimed they don’t get any of the money for the rental through Priceline and it’s the law in Mexico that I purchase their insurance. Do not give them your credit card!! The place they brought us to from the airport was a tiny room on the backside of a building with no signs or anything, very shady. We left and got an uber, will never ever do service with them!!

This company is incredibly deceptive and a bunch of scammers. I prepaid for a car for a week and due to an unforseen emergency I was unable to pick the car up during the time I originally scheduled. This company not only didn't give me my money back but they refused to allow me to rent a different car for the week I had already scheduled. When I called customer service, all they told me was, "Sorry but that's our policy." Do not do business with this company because they will take your money and not try to work with you at all if something goes awry in the reservation process. Absolutely the worst company I have ever worked with.

Pathetic

Rented from NextCar in Puerto Rico for a week. Returned the car without issue, but it took over 4 months and endless effort to get my deposit back. I emailed 20+ people, made hundreds of calls, and spoke to 30+ reps, most of whom were either useless or didn’t even bother to answer. I was ignored, hung up on, and completely dismissed. Customer service is non-existent.

The car itself? Disgusting. The smell was so bad it lingered for days, even after airing it out and using a bomb. It was like they cleaned it with a moldy mop.

To top it off, the owner replies to every bad review with the same fake, copy-pasted message:
“Thank you for sharing your feedback... please contact Customer Care…”
— As if anyone picks up! Stop pasting robotic replies and start answering your phones.

With 2 stars after over 2,100 reviews, it’s clear this isn’t an “uncommon instance.” I would’ve happily paid $15 more for a decent company. This place is a complete joke. Avoid NextCar at all costs.

Totally ripped off by Nextcar

Totally ripped off by Nextcar - do NOT use this company. They did not have my rental as reserved/paid for when I arrived at the airport. They said I could wait 4 hrs and MAYBE they'd have a car. Or, they said I could cancel and "request" a refund. When I said to cancel and give me a refund, they cancelled and said to ask Expedia for the refund. Expedia could not get in touch with Nextcar for quite some time and then said the Nextcar manager would not approve the refund. They kept my money, did not provide a rental, and then refused to give a refund. Also, it felt like a real scam when they said "do you want us to cancel and request a refund" only to cancel and then send me on a wild goose chase for the refund they didn't intend to grant.
