A PhD is not good enough

I applied to be a sociology tutor. I pivoted from three Cs in Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and did a foundation degree in humanities, eventually scoring an average of 75 in my undergraduate sociology degree.

Since, I have gained a masters and then doctoral degree. A PhD that was funded by the ESRC, and supervised by one of the greatest scholars in the last five decades. The peak achievement of the English education system - the end goal of all tutoring, and dream of many tutee.

I was rejected automatically from this platform from not achieving a B or higher at A-Level. Which is a level 3 qualification. But I hold a level 8 qualification, and am certified to write the textbooks for a sociology class.

The support staff reaction when I pointed out the absurdity was to just quote "you did not meet our criteria", over and over. And I got a copy/paste response from the 'senior support staff'.

Robots most likely?

I changed my grades from medicore to exceptional. This makes me an idea tutor. My rejection here makes me question the integrity of this site and the people that it is recruiting.

Edit: I registered to teach undergraduate and post graduate. So the comment below makes no sense.

Hi Adam,

Thank you for taking the time to leave your review.

We appreciate that not meeting the criteria for the next stage of the tutor application process isn’t ideal, however, our policy requires that all tutors on the platform need to have achieved at least a B grade at A-level in the subjects they’d like to tutor. This is regardless of any higher qualifications such as undergraduate, master's, or doctoral degrees.

This policy is based on the platform's "near-peer" tutoring model, which prioritizes tutors who have recently and successfully completed the same qualifications as the students they will be supporting. The requirement applies even if you have advanced degrees or significant teaching experience, as the majority of the customer base seeks help specifically with GCSE and A-level subjects.

We understand your disappointment but want to reassure you that this is not a reflection on your higher academic achievements. The policy in regards to A-levels is applied consistently to all applicants to maintain the platform's model and customer expectations.

If you’d like to discuss anything further, please feel free to contact us via live chat or email us at support@mytutor.co.uk

Thank you again for providing us with your feedback.

Engaging and supportive tutor pays off

Our daughter has found real benefit to a carefully selected and matched tutor who has motivated and inspired her knowledge of biology. There is no reluctance to have the extra lessons and actually looks forward to them. Her school teacher has noticed the improvement and passed comment. Very pleased.

Very good tutoring

Both tutors (English and Chemistry) are very good. At the end of each lesson, my daughter has always learned or understood better something. Marey (English) sends a very detailed report after each lesson which is very much appreciated.

Excellent tutor

Excellent tutor, at an affordable price, who has given my daughter a massive amount of confidence in Maths. I believe that the quality of the tutor will make the difference next summer in her passing rather than failing her Maths GCSE

An excellent choice for my son who has…

An excellent choice for my son who has pushed himself to take A-level Maths - he’s found the Tutor invaluable and everything is explained and gone through at a pace he can follow and understand. The tutor is careful to make sure the student is comfortable with a chosen topic before moving onto the next phase. I love the communication and how easy it is to set up the lessons and the fact that you get feedback after each session. Overall a great experience to date.
