McCarthy's-your go-to removals company!

Our experience with the lads working for McCarthy's has been nothing short of superb. All of them were pleasant, helpful, reassuring and supportive. They understood our stresses and concerns and their ready humour was a great help. Their work-rate was simply staggering! We couldn't believe what we were seeing, and nothing was too much trouble for them. We know it's their job but they performed it with diligence and uncomplaining dedication. The McCarthy's crew made our lives and our move so much more pleasant and manageable. We would heartily recommend them without reservation to others. Our thanks to: Charlton, Ben, Michael, Josh, Dan, Richard and two lovely heroes from Bridlington whose names we missed, but one was Richard's son!

The support offered by Tony, from our very first interaction with McCarthy's, has been exemplary - friendly, understanding, robust, practical and adaptable - nothing phased him! When we were feeling completely overwhelmed, Tony calmed us down and made things feel possible. He more than honoured every pledge and undertaking, and in many ways he "went the extra mile" on our behalf. His good humour and patience in the face of our nervous pestering was admirable. We were so impressed by his preparation and research.

We also feel grateful to Wayne for his "wizardry" in sorting out almost impossible schedules, and Tamara for her friendly support during numerous panic-stricken phone calls.

Thank you so much for your incredibly kind and thoughtful review. We’re absolutely delighted to hear how positive your experience was with McCarthys.

Charlton, Ben, Michael, Josh, Dan, Richard (and Richard’s son!), along with the rest of the crew, will be so pleased to know their hard work, humour, and dedication made such a difference during your move. We’ll also be sure to pass on your lovely words to Tony, Wayne, and Tamara—they’ll really appreciate the recognition.

It means a great deal to us that you felt supported every step of the way. Thank you again for your recommendation and for trusting McCarthy’s with your move—we wish you all the very best in your new home!

Prompt response & Professional team!

Had the need for a short notice quicker than expected domestic house removal.
So given only a weeks lead time office manager Tamara brought a fast proposal, and put forward a deal in rapid time. Easy self build quote and price agreed
Team on the day Mike and Dan….very prompt, courteous and professional. We’re here to take the stress away was the opening line. All removals/transfer done fast and efficient
Top team all round Thank you!

DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!!!!They didn't engage properly with my requirements, never came to do an assessment of the move from my flat then without noticed cancelled my move with less than 7 days notice... at first they said for one reason then changed that to something else. A cancellation that could of cost me thousands if it had caused delays or the sale falling through.

Thank you for your feedback. As a business we take all complaints very seriously and address accordingly.
Unfortunately due to high demand we cannot always get out to view in person every single property who wish to move, so we have a procedure in place to determine what needs to be physically viewed, what can be done on video survey, or what can be done on a detailed - which is what you provided and what we quoted on.
And just to clarify, we only provided you with a quotation, subject to you providing us more information about parking, and if we could have lift access to your apartment located on the 8th floor. To book your removal you have to pay and return your signed contracts. This never happened so you were never booked in, and we were still waiting on the information requested from you to confirm if the quote would be valid - so to say we "cancelled" your move is completely inaccurate. When you finally did get back to us with the information, you informed us that we were not allowed to use the lift, meaning all of your furniture effects would have to be carried down the stairs from the 8th floor, which meant the original quote we provided you (with lift access) was null and void. We did provide a new quote but at the time of this quote the dates you were wanting to move on had now become fully booked. We are sorry that we could not accommodate your move, but to say we cancelled your move when you never booked our services is incorrect.

Adam and Josh from McCarthy Removals…

Adam and Josh from McCarthy Removals Leeds were excellent when delivering items that had been in store. They were efficient, handling the items with great care. I have no hesitation in recommending McCarthy’s team

If I would give McCarthys a minus stars I would

If I would give minus stars I would. Please do not use this company. We had the most stressful move with the most unprofessional company I have ever come across. We used McCarthys years ago when Roy still headed up the company so felt we were in good trusted hands. How wrong we were, since the company buy out the company has gone down hill. The staff were rude, aggressive, little care for our things, used our bathrooms without consent ( as in the shower!) no organisation, no direction, no accountability. We paid for packing and it was all such chaos I ended up having to do lots of packing. Their response was well that was your choice, it wasn’t I just knew we weren’t going to get out in time. They left things behind and broke so much. Honestly if you are considering this company get another quote from elsewhere and don’t. Save yourself stress, anguish, feeling scared by aggressive behaviour and breakages.

Adam and his team were excellent

Adam and his team were excellent, we paid for the kitchen full packing service on top of whole house collection, storage then later (eight weeks) delivery to new home. We didn’t need access to the storage unit, but were told we could if necessary. Paperwork showed what the team had packed in which storage container. The team dismantled and reassembled furniture without issue. All in all very professional and they knew how to pack things safely and securely, we had zero breakages or damage to old and new home. Highly recommended. Thanks Adam and all involved including office staff.

Wouldn't recommend or use again

Wouldn't recommend or use again. Direct Debit was taken any day between 4 dates, I missed a payment purely down to an oversight and was nailed with a £40 penalty instantly. Complained about a damaged light sensor in February 2021 as you had to walk in complete darkness to the other side of the building to activate the other working sensor every time the timer expired (5 mins) nobody seemed to care and other occupants had the same complaint, it was finally fixed in September 2021. Not enough trolleys so you're out of luck on busy days. Overall happy to take your money but aren't too fussed over anything else. Building has leaks during heavy rain so slippy on a night if the light is out! Shocking considering the price!!

Amazing building and people - 6 stars if I could!

Brilliant service from everyone can't praise them highly enough. Was in a proper difficult situation and they were professional, efficient and interested in me as an individual, not just another customer. Made the move so much easier, sorted all the boxes and stuff and even recommended a really sound bloke for removals so that was another job sorted. Units are clean and secure, the whole building is proper nice, so much nicer then all the other places I looked. Would definitely recommend them to anyone and would definitely use again if I ever need storage again.

A poor experience from beginning to…

A poor experience from beginning to end. We stored my son's belongings with McCarthy Storage when he moved from Leeds to London.

When we first booked the unit we arrived to find it occupied and had to put all our stuff upstairs in a different building that did not have a liift. As I am disabled this was not the best start. Then, while he was in London, a lady called Karen phoned him saying he had to pay an outstanding balance of £60, despite the fact that he had paid every invoice sent. She could not explain how he owed the money and later phoned him back to say it was her mistake and he didn't owe it.

He thought that was the end of it, but McCarthy's had one more surprise in store. When we drove from Cheshire to Leeds on Sun 15/08/21 to collect his stuff we found our access suspended and we were unable to get his property. This was despite his account being paid until the end of the month and the correct notice given.

There is no way of contacting anyone out of hours so we had no alternative but to return home. When we made the 150 mile round trip again this morning the lady in the office was apologetic at first but when I raised the point that we had made the trip twice and should now be on our way to London, rather than having to drive back to Leeds, her attitude changed, claiming that although she couldn't explain why my son's PIN had been suspended, our access was only office hours and there was nothing she could do.

Be very careful if you use this company for storage, especially if you think you have 24/7 access. It could turn out to be an expensive lesson, as it was for us.

Emily&Dan 5* - the manager less than 1*!

Firstly I want to give HUGE praise to Emily & Dan at the Harrogate office. These guys will go above and beyond to help you. my 1* review doesn’t reflect on them at all.

I can’t say the same for the service we received from the stores manager. We were led down the garden path from day one, not given correct information and all she wanted was our money, claimed to not remember our conversations, and claims to have attempted to call me back but never did. Was very quick to slate her staff to me and put the blame on Emily, which is incredibly unprofessional. Deal with your mistakes like a grownup and sort it out. Tried to charge me £300 for a month when they had only invoiced £112 - claim to have invoiced more but couldn’t provide me with the invoice???? Just a random number but no physical proof.
Wouldn’t give me my deposit back when asked weeks ago, tried to take £25 admin fee for a bounced DD - when of course it’s going to bounce when you try charge me more than what you have invoiced! Which I rang and went into branch to inform them off, Emily was most understanding as was Collette at the time but clearly can’t remember what she said or the notes that were put on the system.
Could be here all day if I put everything that went terribly wrong but I think I’ve said enough!

Eventually got my money back, but would not recommend McCarthy’s at all! Blaming staff members and calling your customers liars is not the way to go!

Also when stated I was complaining I got told “as long as this is the end of it”
Please don’t try bribe me by agreeing to give me MY money back in return for me not putting in a complaint. Shocking, really really shocking!

Poor standard of service

Acting on advice from friends, my wife and I selected McCarthey's to do our home move, because they were BAR (British Association of Removals) registered, and as such, maintained certain standards. They certainly did, however the level of those standards was poor.

Their office staff were helpful, courtious, and accommodating. However, as the certainty of our completion date became unclear as we got closer to the date, it became apparent that we would be forced to pay a "postponement/cancellation waiver" fee of £220+VAT or lose 75% of our moving costs.

On moving day, delayed completion meant that the moving crew went home at 4:30pm before we received the keys to our new property. This meant our first night was spent without ANY of our belongings. It also meant we had to pay again for a redelivery (at Mccarthy's convenience). To be fair, the redelivery was at a significant reduction, but i feel that being a professional company, they should be aware of the potential for this situation and advise accordingly.

Post move, we discovered numerous breakages and scrapes to furniture. Our observations were that the crews (with one exception) were a bit careless in the handling of our property. Plants were stacked on top of other plants causing broken branches etc. Dents in coffee table, a scratch on the bed frame, and a wrecked shelf on MDF bookcase were a few of the other damages. None of these were worth claiming on, but the fact that they were never mentioned to us by the moving crew is inexcusable. Hence this review.

Zero contact post move either to check if we were happy with the move, or gather feedback.

I would not use this outfit again. Not ever.

McCarthys damaged my furniture and their insurance isn’t covering my loss

I cannot put into words how upset and devastated I am at this storage company. I paid about £3000 to store a whole room of very expensive furniture in two containers to keep it damage free whist I had an extension in my home.
When the furniture was delivered back to me my glass and chrome dining table was so badly scratched that it is ruined.
Having paid for insurance I contacted McCarthys and they sent me the relevant claim forms.
The insurance company asked how much the table was purchased for so I diligently contacted the store from where it was purchased and got them to dig out my account and email me the original receipt. The table cost me over £1800 but the rest of the matching pieces cost another £7000 including matching chairs.
Last week the insurance company offered me £350 as compensation for damages.
This was due to their policy that they only pay you what they deem is the second hand value of your damaged item.
I am absolutely devastated as I highly doubt that I will be able to replace such a beautiful table that was in pristine condition( I have photos to prove) with such a paltry sum.
The moral of this story is do not trust McCarthys Removals and storage Leeds with anything damagable and definitely don’t waste your money on their insurance as it doesn’t pay out.
I haven’t accepted the sum and will seek legal advice.
