Review summary

Created with AI, based on recent reviews

Looking at 78 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall. Many customers report being charged significantly more than the initial booking price, often due to unexpected insurance fees or additional services upon arrival. People frequently mention that the company forces them to purchase extra insurance, even when they already have coverage through their credit card or a third-party booking site. Reviewers also describe issues with their reservations not being honored, leading to a lack of available cars or being pressured into renting a different, more expensive vehicle. Some people were dissatisfied with the staff, describing them as unprofessional and unhelpful when addressing these unexpected charges and reservation problems. Additionally, customers occasionally faced issues with hidden fees, such as charges for alleged damage after drop-off or for after-hours services, and experienced difficulties in getting their security deposits returned.

Bad experience renting a car in Oaxaca, Mexico.

I visited the City of Oaxaca, in Mexico, and rented a car from Mex Rent a Car from January 25th until February 9th, 2026. The car they allowed me to have had crashes all around, and told me that that car was the only one they had available at the moment. I took pictures of the crashes in order to avoid them telling me that the crashes were caused by me. I took great care of the car while I had it with me, and it was in a private parking at night. So, I made sure that nothing happened to the car because of me being careless. When I received the car, the guy who delivered the car to me, behaved like my best friend (Noe Martinez), but when I returned the car he behaved like a bad turkey. He was looking very carefully around the car to see what to blame me and charge me about. He finally found a chip on the windshield and accused me of having caused it. That chip was like nothing as the car was damaged all around. He didn´t accept any reasons from me, and charged me $67 dollars for it. That chip on the windshield certainly didn´t happen while I had the car with me. It was a disgusting experience. I will never rent a car again from this company. Pretty dishonest and untrustworthy.

DO NOT RENT FROM MEX CAR RENTAL

DO NOT RENT FROM MEX CAR RENTAL. WE WERE SENT TO THEM FROM PRICELINE AND THEY ONLY COMMUNICATE VIA A ZOOM SESSION. THEY TRIED TO CHARGE US AN EXTRA $450.00 TO TAKE THEIR INSURANCE. WHEN I BOOKED THRU PRICELINE IT ASKED IF I HAD MY OWN INSURANCE AND I CHECKED YES. THE ZOOM PERSON ON THE OTHER END WOULDN'T ACCEPT MY DEC PAGE FROM PROGRESSIVE THAT HAS THE HIGHEST LIABILITY AND COLLISSION LIMITS. I ARGUED WITH HER SO MUCH SHE DISCONNECTED THE ZOOM CALL. WE LEFT THE BUILDING AND HAD TO WALK DOWN THE STREET WITH OUR LUGGAGE TO ANOTHER RENTAL AGENCY. THEN I FIND OUT THEY CHARGED ME FOR A CAR $208.51 THAT I DIDN'T TAKE FROM THEM. PRICELINE IS USELESS. THEY COULDN'T AND WOULD'T HELP ME EVEN THOUGH THIS VENDOR IS IN THEIR LIST. IT'S NOW 2-17-26 AND THE CHARGE JUST APPEARED AGAIN ON MY CREDIT CARD BILL. CALLED PRICELINE AGAIN AND THEY WILL NOT HELP ME STATING THAT THE CONTRACT FOR THE RENTAL CLEARLY STATES NO REFUNDS. I DON'T HAVE THE CONTRACT. IT WAS ALL DONE VIA ZOOM. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T USE THIS COMPANY.

I reserved this rental in October for a…

I reserved this rental in October for a trip to Los Angeles January 21 thru 26 and was refused the rental because I refused to purchase their insurance due to I have State Farm insurance for 14 years which my policy stated and also states I am covered for rental vehicles as well.
When the driver came to pick me up at the economy garage he did not talk to me the entire ride to the rental facility for starters. The driver threw my luggage to the ground once we arrived to the office where the desk clerk was sleeping in the ladies room with an out of order sign on the door came out and asked me for my entire insurance policy only to tell me since my policy renewed January 8 even though my insurance clearly also stated I have been insured for 14 years and my policy auto renews every 6 months and it also clearly stated I am covered in rental vehicles the rep refused to rent the car to me unless I purchase their insurance starting at $550. I immediately felt scammed and was alone and in fear of my life of asking the driver to take me back to the parking garage so I called a ride to pick me up to take me to the airport to rent a car from budget which costed me and additional $350 plus I had to return the car for a day earlier than I originally paid for on my priceline trip. I had to stand in line for 3 hours to get a car from budget and I am a diabetic and my blood sugar was so low by the time I got the car that my vision was blurred and I had to pull over for an hour and a half and eat and drink until my blood sugar leveled where I could drive to my destination. I was supposed to be at my destination by 2 pm on January 21st and I did not get to my destination until 9 pm that night. MEX car rentals are scammers and priceline needs to stop doing business with these scammers. I looked at the reviews on the website when I returned and was not surprised to see similar negative reviews and all negative reviews. Also I was refused a refund of $110 which I paid for this rental well in advance. Please beware of these scammers. We are living in some very dark times and people are very unethical!!!!!!!!!

Mex Sofia Bulgaria SCAM

Mex Sofia Bulgaria SCAM

I am actually reading so many reviews that looking exactly like my story.
Booked via EconomyBooking.

After a no-show pickup and providing a dirty car, wrong SUV, they ran a known "scratch scam" upon return, claiming pre-existing marks were my fault to keep my €700 deposit. Then they calmed me down that they will return the money and never did. No protocols, no proofs, many reviews like that with exactly the same story. Avoid at all cost and always claim money back from credit company.

Do not rent a car whith them!!

Here’s the translation into English:

Do not rent from this company — they are scammers!!

We arrived at Cancun airport around midnight. We waited for the transfer for almost an hour and no one came to pick us up. By chance, we met a guy who explained that you could actually walk there, so we went on foot. When we arrived at the office, they told us that there were no cars available. However, we already had a reservation that had been paid for two months earlier through Booking.

They told us they could put us on a waiting list for the next day and that they would notify us when a car became available, so we agreed. We went to the hotel by taxi with all our luggage, having to pay for the taxi ourselves, both going there and coming back.

The next day no one contacted us, so we went directly to the office and they finally gave us a car. Through Booking we had purchased insurance that supposedly covered everything, but when we arrived at the office they told us it did not cover third-party damage, so we had to pay double what the reservation had originally cost.

This company is a disgrace; they play games with customers. They cannot do this. If you book a car, you have the right to receive that car on the agreed dates. Here’s the continuation in English:

I hope this review can help more people, and hopefully prevent them from continuing to scam others.

Review: Mex Rent a Car Sofia

I had a very poor and concerning experience with Mex Rent a Car Sofia, booked via EconomyBookings.

On collection, I was told that deposits would be temporarily frozen on my card. Instead, my card was fully debited, including a vehicle deposit of over £400 and a £200 key deposit. I was clearly told by staff that all deposits would be returned, but I am still waiting for this money.

The car itself was handed over in a very dirty condition, with grime and marks all over it. Because of this, when their initial photos were taken, it was difficult to properly identify existing scratches or marks. I then drove extremely carefully from Sofia to Bansko and returned the vehicle with more fuel than I was given.

Despite this, I was later challenged over an alleged tiny mark on the car. When I questioned it, the staff went back and forth before eventually saying it was “fine” and covered by my policy. This felt like a deliberate tactic to create uncertainty and pressure customers into accepting blame or extra charges.

To make matters worse, I booked an SUV or similar and was not provided with an SUV, which is a clear failure to provide what was paid for.

Overall, this experience felt unprofessional, misleading, and stressful. Between the unclear deposit handling, dirty vehicle, attempted damage claim, and incorrect car category, I cannot recommend Mex Rent a Car Sofia. I would strongly advise others to take extreme caution, document everything in detail, and think twice before booking with this company.

Unsanitary and unreliable

They were ~2 hours late to deliver the car (there was nobody at the office). Eventually (after several calls to their call center), somebody showed up and gave us a car that had a large blood stain on the ceiling lining (inside the car), which resulted in a time-consuming procedure with the local police. They acknowledged their shortcomings but failed to reimburse me. They only apologized and offered a 20% discount for the next rent - this is actually an illegal practice and I am certainly never renting a car with them again. Finally, nobody was at the office to receive the car back, so I had to push the car key through a slit between the door and the wall before missing my train.

Please avoid this company. They are scam artists who hide hidden charges and refuse to let you have the car when you arrive. We have ended up spending double what we initially paid via a comparison site.

Mex Rentacar - deceptive and exploitive

Mex Rentacar ( also doing business as Avanti , U-save, Payless, and Routs rentacar) have deceptive and exploitive business practices. Through Expedia I booked a mid-size car + insurance - on arrival in Costa Rica I was given a sub-compact (others not available?) and charged $490 for local insurance and required to leave a $2500 "security deposit". On returning the vehicle, whilst I was in the office, the rental agent called me out to show me a minor scuff mark on the sill of the front of the car (did he mark the car? as I have no recollection of any driving maneuver to cause it??) - I was then told I needed to pay $1130 for the repair. I disputed liability as the CDW SLI insurance covered it. That was denied to be covered. My request for a copy of the policy documents was denied. Further the $2500 "security deposit" would not be refunded unless I paid the $1130 repair. I will not do any business with any of these companies again and I would strongly advise anyone reading this not to deal with these companies.

Scamming rental car company

I rented a car through a third party website (Holidaycars.com). I added additional insurance through this website as well.

When I went to pick up the car, the lady at the counter claimed I did not have any third party insurance with the car and she did not want to give me the keys if I would not book an additional third party insurance.

I was shocked as third party insurance is the basic insurance that is supposed to be included in the rental contract. I also showed her that on the holidaycars.com website, my rental contract with Holidaycars.com clearly states third party insurance included.

However, she said that her system did not show that I booked third party insurance. Therefore, I was forced to buy a third party insurance., or I would not be able to take the car. As I was on holiday and stranded in the pickuplocation, I felt trapped and forced to pay the 244.49$ (original rental contract was 100$).She told me the contract would be mailed to my email adres.

When looking at the documents that were mailed, it does not state third party insurance, but SUPPLEMENTAL LIABILITY INSURANCE . The contract also mentions a list of additional costs that she did not mention at all (airport fees, Licence fee and extra days (although I did not add any days)).

I contacted Holidaycars. com they claimed that she was not allowed to ask this additional insurance but as the contract mentions additional liability insurance they claim these are not the basic liability (as this was included in the rental contract with Holiday cars) but additional fees that i chose to pay.

Clearly this is a scamming company, do not rent a car with them and if they claim there is not liability insurance, just ignore them, go to another company.

AVOID! This company is unreliable

We had a confirmed and fully paid reservation made two months in advance with Mex via Booking.com. Upon arrival at Tulum Airport on December 27, 2025, MEX did not honor the reservation. They didn’t have a vehicule for us stating that it’s their busy season. The manager basically said that the reservation “meant nothing” because it was booked with a third party and not directly with MEX.

We were left without a car and forced to rent elsewhere last-minute at approximately 5× the original price. There was no accountability or concern from MEX afterwards. Needless to say that getting our money back from Booking.com is a challenge as we still haven’t been refunded after over three weeks.

Very frustrating experience. I do not recommend this company.

ZERO stars. Please do not be tempted to rent at Tampa airport’s MEX of NEXTcar’s low price offer!

We prepaid our reserved MEX NEXTcar Tampa airport rental. MEX offered a low rental price and then at pick up we experienced an unprofessional MEX counter representative who claimed we had no reservation nor insurance to prohibit our car pick up. (We suspect there was no car.) We rent cars frequently and have never been required to show an insurance card. As we phoned our insurance agent, the aggressive MEX rep cancelled our prepaid reservation even though we repeatedly told her not to cancel. With proof of a prepaid contract contacting NEXTcar, who owns MEX, replied with a form letter which clearly indicated NEXTcar was ignoring the facts to escape accountability. More evidence that this company practices tactics to take advantage of the unknowing consumer. Fortunately, Priceline recognized that MEX had broken a prepaid contract and refunded the full amount. We have rented many cars through the years. Tampa airport’s MEX of NEXTcar is the worst for treating us badly and for their blatant dishonesty.

Scammers!

We arrived at Tulum Airport in the evening after more than 18 hours of travel. We had a car rental reservation made four months in advance, fully confirmed and prepaid through Booking.com, for a one-week rental.

When we went to the Mex Rent A Car counter expecting to collect the vehicle we had booked, we were told that no cars were available unless we paid an additional USD 1,200.

To be absolutely clear: we were asked to pay twice for the same service, despite having a valid, confirmed, and prepaid reservation.
When we refused this forced “upgrade”, no alternative solution was offered, and no assistance of any kind was provided.

We were left completely abandoned, with no support and no empathy. We were even asked to step away from the counter so they could serve other customers, and then ignored entirely.

We begged them to at least send us an email or any written confirmation stating that no cars were available, so we could try to obtain a refund through Booking.com. They refused to provide any written communication, clearly to avoid responsibility.

No effort whatsoever was made to resolve our situation, and they were rude and unprofessional, including the manager.

After reading other reviews, it is clear that this is a common practice.

DO NOT RENT FROM THESE RUDE AND DISHONEST SCAMMERS.

Stay away from this car rental company, is a fake!!

booked via Booking.com and confirmed, once arrived (ON TIME) at the airport they've asked for an extra amount o 1.200USD (on top on what paid via Booking) to rent a DIFFERENT car because they did not reserve any car.
It's not a rental company, they're just scammers with a rental desk at the airport.

RUN AWAY FROM THIS FRAUD!

RUN AWAY FROM THIS FRAUD!

This is not a legitimate business; it is a trap designed to extort money from travelers. The low price you see online is FAKE. Do not make the mistake of booking with them.
Here is exactly how they operate:

1. Bait and Switch Pricing: My flight was cancelled, so I called their support line multiple times. They assured me I could postpone the pickup without issues. However, when I arrived at the counter, they denied everything. They ruthlessly demanded I pay €2,000 instead of the original €400. They lie over the phone just to get you to the counter so they can squeeze you.

2. Forced Insurance Extortion: They forced me to pay €400 for insurance on a €300 rental. This is theft. I provided proof of full coverage via Rentalcars AND my Amex card. They simply refused to acknowledge it. They even refused to speak to the Rentalcars agent I had on the phone who wanted to verify the coverage. They corner you: either pay their extortionate fees or walk away without a car.

3. Decrepit, Unsafe Vehicles: The car they gave me was old, half-broken, and dangerous. They handed it over with a completely EMPTY GAS TANK. Even worse, the tire pressure warning light was on immediately. When I pointed it out, they dismissed it, claiming it just needed air. That was a lie: the light stayed on for the entire trip even after inflating the tires. They knowingly sent me out in a faulty vehicle.

4. Fabricated Damages: To top it all off, upon return, they tried to charge me for a floor mat that was missing when I picked up the car. LUCKILY, I had a video from the pickup and caught them in their lie. If I hadn't filmed the car, they would have stolen even more money from me.

These people are dishonest, rude, and predatory. Save your money and your safety—go anywhere else.

Mex car hire

I would strongly advise not to use this company. We booked a car in St. Martin and we were advised that we would be met in the arrivals hall at Princess Juliana Airport at 21.30 on 7th December, 2025. Nobody arrived, and we tried telephoning the company but the telephone was not answered. We had to get a taxi to our accommodation, which cost 50 USD, and we also had to hire a car from a local company close to our accommodation. We never received any communication from Mex.
