Mantara Health is a UK-based healthcare company specialising in Pharmacogenomic (PGx) testing - helping people understand how their genetics affect the way they respond to prescription medicines. For many people, medication can involve trial-and-error. A drug may not work as expected, cause unwanted side effects, or need changing several times before the right fit is found. Often, this isn’t chance - it’s genetics. Almost everyone carries at least one genetic variant that affects how their body processes medicines. Mantara’s PGx testing is designed to bring clarity. Using a simple at-home saliva sample, we analyse key genes involved in medication metabolism and response. Results are presented in a clear, easy-to-understand report that helps explain: Which medicines are likely to work as expected Where dose adjustments may be needed Which medicines may carry a higher risk of side effects or reduced effectiveness We work closely with clinicians, pharmacists and healthcare professionals, and our testing is grounded in established clinical guidelines and evidence-based research. Mantara currently offers: A comprehensive PGx panel covering a wide range of commonly prescribed medicines A focused clopidogrel response test. Around 1 in 3 people do not respond to clopidogrel as intended due to genetics, making testing particularly important for some patients Our mission is to reduce unnecessary trial-and-error in prescribing, improve patient outcomes, and give people meaningful insight into their treatment. We believe better prescribing starts with understanding the individual - and that genetics should be part of everyday healthcare, not a last resort.

A “just in case” test that proved its value about 3 years later

I took Mantara’s saliva-based pharmacogenomics (PGx) test a few years ago and filed the report away. It turned out to be far more useful than I expected. Amongst other things, it showed I’m a fast metaboliser of common stomach-protection medicines (PPIs such as lansoprazole/omeprazole).

About three years later, when my GP prescribed an anti-inflammatory painkiller, they also added lansoprazole because I’m on rivaroxaban (a blood thinner) and that combination can increase the risk of a serious stomach bleed. Because I had the PGx report, we could take into account that standard lanzoprazole doses may be less effective for me — it indicated I may need up to 4× the usual dose for the same protection. My GP adjusted the dose, which may well have helped me avoid a gastric bleed and what can follow: many days in hospital, urgent investigations, possible transfusions, and in worse cases emergency procedures/surgery — plus weeks out of action. As someone who is self-employed, that would have been a major personal and financial hit (as well as a cost to the NHS).

Taking the test is a simple process, with clear report, and it’s genuinely useful when you’re prescribed something new — it helps you have a more informed discussion with your GP. I’d recommend it even if you’re not currently on regular medication.

Health insight and optimisation

As part of my plans to optimise health, I chose Mantara to understand my response to certain medications. I spoke with the team who were incredibly helpful and the tests were easy to complete. The report was comprehensive and I was able to discuss results and implications. 2 years later I have been able to apply valuable information to address cardiovascular issues. Without this knowledge my outcomes could have been significantly worse.

Mantara Health helped me after I had a TIA / Stroke

I am a 86 years old widow. I was concerned about my medications not working correctly, I took the Mantara panel test. Mantara Health were very professional and turned my test around quickly. The report identified I couldn’t take clopidogrel. As it happened I had a stroke 6 months after my test. The NHS doctor agreed with the Mantara test result and put me on an alternative drug which helps protects me from another stroke.

saliva genetic test to check your medication

Easy to use saliva genetic test to check my genetics. My medication was not working and trying different tablets every 6 weeks was not the answer to my condition! The Mantara test report told me which medication to go on and even what dose to take. It is like a light switch, showing the way to help my condition.
I think this test should be available to everyone who needs medication. It saves time and money for filling multiple prescriptions, time wasted and suffering whilst the condition was not treated properly.
Mantara test is easy to do and I didn't need to go to the doctors for it. I just informed the doctor of my results for him to change it to the right mediation. It was a life changer. I highly recommend.
