Very good customer service and communication but is an faulty Mac worth repairing?

Communication, organisation and customer care is something MacAssist are superb at. Their response times and updates are great. If you use them you can expect a smooth experience.

Sadly my 2011 MacBook Pro had the infamous GPU problem, and failed shortly after the extended apple warranty was withdrawn. The repair was £275. I did enquire if the repair was a reball as research had told me these were somewhat renowned as temporary at best but didn't get a clear answer which with hindsight I should have perhaps dug deeper.

The MacBook was fixed and returned and worked for about 30 days before the GPU failed again. 90 day warranty meant I could send it back in. However I was told the only option then was a full board replacement or a refund (£575 for the board so another £300 on top of what I had already paid). I felt somewhat invested by this point and went ahead. Once again couriers were sent out same day and amazing response from the staff at MacAssist. I was as always impressed with their attitude and approach to the customer, fast responses and calls with updates. It was hard not to like the MacAssist team.

When I got the machine back it was a slightly slower processor, worse graphics card but on the plus side more ram than I had previously. I put this down to an aging machine and parts being difficult and gave them the benefit of the doubt. I was just happy to be able to work on it again.

After about 7 months, sadly the new board started to randomly switch off and only charge occasionally. I changed the battery but sadly that wasn't the problem. This has got worse over time. Now a little over 12 months after the repair the Mac won't work on the battery for long without random shut offs. It also intermittently won't charge. I suspect as is often the way with Apple a whole new board will be the only fix.

That is what makes this review hard, MacAssist were great and slick but from my experience fixing old Macs (at least a 2011 one) is just a false economy. I could have bought a decent PC with a full years warranty for £600 instead I put more money into a poorly designed Mac that is failing again and can't be used off power. I think it is safe to say that I will be steering clear of apple products in the foreseeable future but poor design isn't this companies fault and MacAssist will give great customer service and look after you if you use them.
