NOW OWNED BY A THAI COMPANY.
What happened to John West, they were such a great company, top of the game but now I'm seeing so many people having issues with their products.
Myself. I complained about ordering 6 sardine cans for £17 via amazon, the cans arrived filthy and sticky so much so that I had to wash them all in warm water, almost a week later and STILL heard nothing...
Sardines -Shocking change in can size and ingredients
Sardines in tomato sauce now about 25% smaller and has a ton of sunflower oil - used to have none. I used to buy several tins a week but will not ever buy again. Horribly oily and poor quality and a rip off.
Purchased John West Protein + Tuna Bowl…
Purchased John West Protein + Tuna Bowl and the tuna and roasted capsicum one also. Does not mention on the front of pack that it is spicy. Ate it and burned my mouth. So checked ingredients at back of pack, says chilli. Its very spicy hot and just unfair that it does not state Chilli tuna bowl. Why do we need to check the small print ingredients to see that these serves have spicy chilli in them and there are elderly that cannot eat such spicy hot food. When we purchase a tuna can with chillies, that states that there's chilli, so why don't these? Remove the chilli!!!
Fridge pot tuna inedible
Fridge pot tuna steak in spring water. We have been buying this frequently but twice recently we have bought a batch which tastes bitter and foul - inedible. The packs were bought at different stores a couple of months apart. To happen twice suggests a supply and quality control problem.

HUGE and multiple bones found in a single can. Will be sticking to supermarket own brands. Lethal if you have a small child!
John West Tuna
Really fancy making some tuna pasta so purchased a multi pack of john west tuna in brine when open was greeted by what i can describe as a tin of water with a small amount of tuna So i squeeze out the five tins and managed to put back the contents into two tins the rest was water. Complete rip off and feel like i have been taking for a ride .Dont buy this product as it is just another item were it is all for profit. Will never buy again Disgusting.
Been buying John west tuna for yrs…
Been buying John west tuna for yrs lately it’s just shredded bits in water , when drained less than half a can of tuna , the stars rating is disgusting and the smell lately is just not right I know it’s tuna but it real stinks , I stopped eating and buying it , I was buying it for the dog , and only recently started buying Sainsbury’s own brand tuna for the dog it’s got almost 5 stars how can that be and the smell is not as pungent as Birds Eye tuna . I’m thinking of eating Sainsbury’s tuna .
Brown plastic tasting horrible tuna
The 2 tins of fish which I brought was…
The 2 tins of fish which I brought was dry this tell me the fish as been frozen and when thawed out most of moisture lost then the fish will be dry. You can tell by just eating the fish with no sauces or batter it will tended to roil round inside your mouth in a ball especially fish from fish shops you have to eat the batter for moisture , best tined fish to buy like salmon is from Aldi or m&s wouldn’t buy John west big let down from long established company

From John West,
Soggy Wet Tuna Mush Supposed to be Chunks
Recently purchased No Drain Tuna Chunks in Springwater. Opened 2 tins and both were just full of a watery mush. No chucks at all. Tried to make a sandwich which turned in to a soggy mess. Cheaper brands are better than this even when you have to drain the spring water away. Emailed company with photos but no response. Wish there was the option to add photos to this review.
Bought two tins of medium red salmon
Bought two tins of medium red salmon. The first tin opened tasted strange and not a bit like salmon so I opened the second tin and this tasted exactly the same. No salmon smell and bitter aftertaste. Disgusting! I binned the lot and will never buy John West products again! Ps. Even my cats refuse to eat John West tuna and will not touch the salmon either!
Today 6 April 2025
Today 6 April 2025, I have just opened a tin of John West Tuna and it was almost half full of oil and just over half the normal amount of tuna. What little there was in the tin was of outstanding quality as usual.
No very pleased, I buy this product for its quality and quantity!

Recent Steep Quality Drop
To preface; I've been eating their tins of tuna in brine for years, and the worst I've had happen is a bit of bone once or twice over the course of like 10 years. No problems there, that's to be expected when you're dealing with animals with small, thin bones. It happens.
This year alone though (and it's only March), I've opened multiple tins of tuna with weird crispy/crunchy brown spots, tuna absolutely pulverised into a pink paste, and tins that are 3/4 brine and 1/4 tuna. What is going on over there??? New management cutting corners or something?
On The Go light Italian Tuna Pasta…
On The Go light Italian Tuna Pasta salad. Bland, mushy. The aubergines bits are awful. And no sign of any tuna ANYWHERE! Step up John West or you will lose a lot of customers!
Glass found in tin of John West salmon
As my wife began eating a freshly opened tin of John West salmon she felt a crunch which she took to be bone. A second bite gave another crunch, definitely not bone. This bite went in the bin. Looking through the remains on the plate she found another piece of glass. This company seems to make contacting them by email or phone difficult to impossible.
FLY INSIDE TIN
I opened a tin of tuna chunks in brine last night, to my discust there was a dead fly INSIDE the tin, trying to get hold of John West UK is proving rather difficult. I have always used John West and never had a problem before but finding that was disgusting! Date on tin was bbe June 2027.
Do not buy John west mackerel in tomato…
Do not buy John west mackerel in tomato sauce, unlike most tinned fish which are tightly packed together, in this tin three very small fillets and plenty of sauce I presume to allow the fish to have a good swim. Like all these manufacturers everything gets smaller or quantity suffers, I will not buy off these companies and everyone should do the same until they stop ripping people off.
Mackeral in tomato sauce changed & awful
Skinless and boneless mackeral in tomato sauce used to be fantastic. Not now. I bought 2 tins just to make sure. The sauce is tasteless, dark in colour and bitter and flat. It used to taste sweet, tomatoey and was a much better colour and consistency. I tried to contact them the but online form 'doesn't work' on ANY browser!! Bit suspicious I think! What a crying shame they've been bought out. Awful product now and terrible customer service if you can't even contact them!
